Hello,

There have been many of these kinds of threads I'm sure, but I find that everybody just has a slight difference in games they like and dislike ("hate" is an overused word that has totally lost it's meaning).

Guild Wars 2. It has been a while since it launched. I'm very interested in investing quite some time in this game. It has a ton of hype, it's loved by the fans of the franchise and even liked among the general WoW crowd.

To determine whether or not Guild Wars 2 is "my thing", allow me to accompany you with as much information as I can think of, beginning in what MMO's I played.

World of Warcraft. Of course. What other MMO could possibly be my first? In Vanilla, when I was much younger, I thought it stank of elitist college students who liked to crush the little guy, ninja as much loot as possible, were willing to run the same dungeon about 10 billion times in order to get the one-in-a-million chance at getting that one item in a set which was unique, bragged about being level 60, 70 or more in a very short time, neglecting the world itself and were general DOUCHEMONKEYS. My god, I hated Vanilla. It catered so much to players who were willing to sell their souls for the Winterspring Saber Mount or whatever.

But now? I think World of Warcraft is the best MMO you could possibly make. Seriously. I'm one of those the aforementioned elitists hate. And I'm not an entitled kid, and I didn't even make a forum post venting my frustration of the game. I just tried to ignore the annoyance until I stopped in 2010. WoW now is bursting with content, but it's now catering to the extreme other end (me). I would really, really LOVE it if only I didn't play the game to death. It's one of those few games that I really have no shred of interest playing. Not because I don't like it but because the mechanics feel so incredibly old I would be bored out of my skull, which is a real shame because I would probably LOVE WoW now.

Cabal Online. While playing and taking a break from WoW, every now and again I played Cabal Online. I loved that game until I stopped out of repetition. I adore the combat, flashyness (is that a word?) and the simple questing. Oh yeah! The music kicked ass as well! I loved the idea of setting up shop on your own too.

Guild Wars: Factions. I liked it to an extent. I liked it better than WoW Vanilla. The way the game tells you the story while you have to chase a murderer or something through dangerous dungeons and such was really fun. I thought the level 20 cap was interesting, but honest to god, I don't remember why. I loved the Asian look of the world, and I liked the PvP too. Actually, the only reason I stopped playing was because it was too difficult for me. I couldn't complete it! I hated the difficulty. You always needed a full group to do anything. You could hire AI partners in that game but they were absolutely useless!

ArchLord. Two words. Korean. Grind. The movie BenX made me play the game. I liked the setting and art style.

Aion: Ascension. As I'm writing this post I uninstalled Aion. If I look at it from a pure technical standpoint, I think it's a good game, even a great game at times. Some of the individual areas look REALLY nice and above all, it's free! But let's be honest here: It's trying to be WoW with more flying and more grinding. If I wanted to play WoW, I'd play WoW.

So, based on these opinions I hope you guys can determine if I would like GW2 and what I would dislike about it. If you have anymore questions, please do not hesitate to ask them.

TL;DL: GW2 good? Bad? Me like WoW 2012. Cabal Online fun too, fighting nice. Guild Wars: Factions too many other chosen ones needed. ArchLord Korean grind, no fun. Aion: Ascension is okay, but too much WoW. So, based on these opinions I hope you guys can determine if I would like GW2 and what I would dislike about it. If you have anymore questions, please do not hesitate to ask them.

This post may be edited many times, so expect to see some edits if needed.

Well you no longer need a group to do everything PvE wise. Dynamic Events sometimes need a group and dungeons obviously do but normal content doesn't.

PvP is split into 3 sections. Tournaments are 5 a side "arena" style matches, sPvP is 8 a side battlegrounds and WvWvW which is "open" PvP split into 4 maps.

There is no grinding, even if you want to grind you can't. There is diminishing returns on drop rates so farming is out. If you stay in one spot killing for too long then the drop rate of items falls drastically. Supposedly it's to stop botters but the game is riddles with them still so it didn't do anything.

Well, it's hard to say really. It isn't as hard as Factions, however, Many events are not meant to be solo'd. In the same breath, events are like player magnets and it is hard to find a large event unattended... Hell, I never have. I have ran into large events where me and a handful of other players could defeat it but within 5 mins a mob shows up and it's easily defeated.

Personally, I care more about the maps and events that happen in them more than the story. The story has some missed potential dwelling in it and I cant help but see it when I playthrough it.

Edit: Anyone here play on Dragonbrand server and want a guild?

Can't hurt to try it, there's no subscription fee. Take it as any other $60 game. It has huge world, gorgeous graphics, dynamic events and quests that don't make you run back and forth all the time or queue up for things. If you liked skyrim, it improves on a few things in that game too like actual underwater fighting.

I'm pretty much in the same 'pool' as you. I thought WoW was the dogs bollocks for the last seven years of playing. It has everything I want in a game - variety, character customisation, cool pets, pretty areas, places to explore: but all the things I like in WoW were never achievements, oh no. It was always raiding or PvP lovers that got the achievements.

GW2 caters for my love of the RPG element of MMORPGs. The character story is immersive and different every time. The exploration element is absolutely addictive - I'm always getting distracted from the 'hearts' (aka quests) to go and pick up vista's, or do jumping puzzles, or grab the nearest point of interest. And you are rewarded for exploring the beautiful world with exp, coin and items, which is great for a lowly exploration-lover like myself.

It's probably the best £33.99 I ever spent. So long as you take the game a day at a time and don't rush yourself, you'll love it. Most of the people I know that've got bored are people who just grind their way to the maximum level without taking the time to explore the game and do some of the most immersive quest-lines I've found in a MMO.

Get it. Get ittt....

Best money I've spent this year. A zillion hours of play time with CONSTANT new content and haven't even capped my main.

Every class is pretty unique and interesting, I never liked alts - but GW2 has a very diverse cast of proffessions that's worth exploring

From those games it's a bit hard to say whether you'll like Guild Wars 2, but as an old Cabal Online fan myself (quit the game due to grind past level 70) I think you'll enjoy it.

It's fun by itself, but a whole ton of fun when you're playing with friends like I am. However, the enjoyment doesn't really require it unlike some other MMOs, those games being an absolute snore-fest when played solo. Yes, I'm looking at you LotRO!

What GW2 caters over anything else is exploration. So if you really love games like Zelda, Skyrim or Fallout, you'll love GW2. GW2 essentially throws "best stuff at the end of game" out of the window and tells you that every map gives ya a sample of a raid or at later levels outdoor quests that are essentially full blown raids.

The level cap is low (or high in GW2) in that gear isn't supposed to have the same priority it apparently has in WoW, or at least it was that way back when I had trial of Guild Wars; skill loadout matters the most. If you want a break from that cycle of "raid biggest boss until you get best gear possible" then GW2 should be very good change.
