Come back to what? Getting their asses curb-stomped by the PS2 6-to-1 or by the Wii with a 20% sales margin?

Back to making another successful console.

If their idea of success is second or third place, then they're already pretty successful.

???

The 360 was a successful console, it sold 85 million units, had plenty of critically acclaimed exclusives and really pushed online functionality for consoles forward with XBL. Is your idea of successful being the most sold console? Then I guess we get two completely unsuccessful consoles every gen.

We should get a good idea by E3 as for what to expect. The real interesting thing will not be how powerful the next Xbox is (slightly better graphics are a given), but instead what features it will have that people actually want.

Guessing full backwards compatibility will be a good start, but not sure what direction they?ll go from there. If they announce it won?t have a disc drive then they will have preemptively lost again.

I suspect they'll aim for either better streaming features or integrate loot boxes into the console itself.

I see arrogant Sony and losing Microsoft reverting to their PS3 and 360 mindset until its time for Microsoft to self destruct again and Sony to learn from their mistake.
I don't really get how Sony became so arrogant with PS3. They pushed both Blu-ray and HDs, which consoles needed, at least the HDs while DVD probably could've lasted one more gen. The cell processor was probably more costly than it needed to be. Adding in backwards compatibility, which is GOOD, also upped the price as well. The only thing bad about the PS3 was really the price, no bad feature was really being pushed on the consumer (like say the Kinect or motion controls). Sony is easily the most consumer friendly of the Big 3 (Microsoft, Nintendo) and it ain't even close and is possibly even the best publisher as well.

Yeah, but making people feel insecure about their financial situation by releasing an expensive product is a no-no, even if people would have saved money in other areas by buying a PS3 ( online was free, no proprietary HDDs ).

If that is the worst or most arrogant Sony ever gets, then they are easily the best out of the big 3 and it ain't even close. PS3 gen Nintendo forced motion controls and also delayed Zelda just to get it on the Wii after delaying it forever on the Gamecube and released the Gamecube version AFTER the Wii version, and Microsoft knowingly released a console they knew would break. Thus Sony being arrogant is better than, I guess, Nintendo and Microsoft not being arrogant IMO. Plus, I doubt Sony or any company is going to release a console so expensive due to x86 now being much much more viable now that it was any generation previous.

Part of Microsoft's problem is that they are also competing with themselves. Every Xbox exclusive that I would want is also available on my PC, so I look at my Xbox One and wonder why I bought it when a PS4 would have been a far better choice for a companion console.

As much as I hate to say it if Microsoft want to make a comeback in the next generation of consoles they need to start by keeping their games exclusive to the console again. As it is there is little reason to buy an Xbox One if you have a PC.

Basically this. They really shot off their own dick when they decided to make every Xbone game playable on the PC. While it ruined their chances to make the Xbone itself a big hit, it probably saved a lot of the games because it gave the games to a bigger audience. Consider how many gaming PC's and Xbones combined their are and you have a pretty decent market share. I doubt any of the Xbox exclusives would have survived without that supplimental PC support.

However it doesn't do anything but prove to make their console obsolete. I will never buy an Xbox so long as the exclusives also come to PC because no console will run better than my high end computer. I have a Switch and a PS4 because those systems get true exclusives. Horizon, God of War, Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, I NEED a console to play these games. And to add fuel to the fire, Switch and PS4 exclusives are INCREDIBLY good.

Microsoft's best exclusive is Forza Horizon 4. And that game has far less appeal than the potential appeal of a Crackdown or what Scalebound could of had.

Originally it was Gates? idea I think to put a Microsoft/Windows device in every living room, and the Xbox was the vehicle for that idea. They are still basically on track with that goal but the problem is their competition is simply offering better entertainment and value, which is the main point of said device.

One thing I would like to add is unlike Nintendo and Sony, Microsoft has never had a strong gaming development division. They've had Developers like Bungie or gearbox but it was a lot more like a rare situation and those companies eventually left. Their three biggest strengths were third parties willing to make games for them instead of the PlayStation 3, having the best online play of the 3 consoles and having a wide indie community.

The problem is they don't have any of these anymore. Third parties are not prioritizing the Xbox anymore, the other two console competitors have much improved online services (even if Nintendo still has some Kinks to work out) and Microsoft has lost a lot of its support from Indies. (I've heard Microsoft was not exactly kind towards Indie developers and many jump ship.) and because they lost all their major advantages from last generation their struggling.

To give them credit they seem to be understanding the importance of first parties now, buying a bunch of Studios but it may be too little too late.

It has always been, and -will- always be the case with games being more important than the console's raw power.
As a consumer, I have to ask, does a system have enough of the games I want and the power (and best controller) to impress me and have fun. The power is a bonus.
The PS4 is clobbering the XB1 this gen for exclussive games. But I do love Halo, Gears and Forza. The XB1 has the most comfortable controller out there. My favorite. I still use one on my PC too. The Play Anywhere feature is a treat (though, in 5 years, won't I just buy a laptop and park it on my TV??) And the XB1X is the most powerful console out there till PS5 comes out.
Xbox has the industry behind it to be the best console next gen. I could really use them making the exclussive games that won't embarrass me for liking them so much in comparison to PS.

It depends entirely on the games. It doesn't matter how powerful the console is, but if the games aren't worth buying, then neither is the platform. The Xbox One has been continuously let down by its exclusives, which is particularly crushing when they are going toe-to-toe with Sony, who is releasing hit-game after hit-game.

Microsoft's acquisition of a bunch of studios recently is a good start, and hopefully they can start to churn out some great games, soon enough.

Personally, I probably won't buy the next Xbox, so long as Microsoft's play anywhere scheme continues, but for those Xbox One (and beyond) owners, I really hope that Microsoft get it together.
