Make another console? Probably. Make it successful? Mhmmm...dunno. Mileage, varying, etc.

I don't think they'll die out...it's extremely difficult for such a large company to collapse.

Their E3 showing was rather uninspiring, though.

...Although, I do kind of wish Xbox Live Gold was free, but hey, pigs will fly, amiright? I wonder if Microsoft would become more popular overall if they did make it a free service.
If not free, at least cheaper

And for that matter, will there be a PS4? Well maybe not. Not if all these bad things continue happening to Sony.
You mean the one hack on PSN? Has that happened about 5 times and I've simply been on a coma?

Umm.. I sense a fanboy. Microsoft got a hell of a lot less hate than Nintendo did for the Wii U. Their stock dropped below the point it was at pre-Wii, which is insane.
I am many things, but not a fan boy. I have all 3 consoles. I love many 360 exclusives, though I still support the PS3 much more.

Also, investors don't always know what will happen. The only reason their stock dropped is because Nintendo didn't release enough information for them to feel comfortable. Many gamers seem to be reacting very well to it. Most are willing to pay around 300$-350$ according the IGN's new poll (http://wii.ign.com/articles/117/1174410p1.html).

Kinect isn't popular with hardcore groups, and only those really watch E3. Kinect sold extremely well though, and they are making money off of live subscriptions. They are nowhere near the point where they'd stop making consoles.

If there is a company that is going to do so it'd be Sony they're still teetering between losses from the hacking, the fact that the PSN wasn't really breaking even in profits as it was at the time, and the fact that the PS3 took so long to actually be profitable off of the console itself, and I'm sure the earthquake didn't help them financially either.

I posted something along these lines before, but I'll paraphrase to fit the question:

Will Microsoft be able to make another console? Unless there's a sudden catastrophic failure that instantly cripples Microsoft's gaming branch and makes every single third party abandon Microsoft, it's pretty much guaranteed they'll make it to the next generation.

But here's my question: what are they going to justify a new console? What can they do on the new console that both A: can't be done on the 360 and B: Is a good enough of a selling point to get them to buy it?

Yes, but look at their game line ups for the next year/two years. Its amazing and will definitely boost the sales of the console. PSP games/systems will probably drop in price and will be sold off before the Vita hits.

The people on gaming sites are not Wii's core demo. Casual gamers will not be willing to pay that much for something that's squarely aimed at the hardcore. Also, check out other gaming sites. Many of them (not the Nintendo-sponsored ones) are trashing it.

Investor confidence should be high right now because of the success of the Wii 1. It has nothing to do with a lack of information.

Ninetndo lost the hardcore support with the advent of the Wii. Sure, some will still buy it, but most will continue with the norm. Also, considering how the next gen MS and Sony consoles will be far ahead of Wii U, it's attraction to the core demographic will not last.

Also, "the Wii U to be since it doesn't seem to have any new tech besides the controller". I'm sorry. This is starting to piss me off. It IS a new console! I mean, I can see how it'd be confusing, but why are so many people still spiraling around trying to figure it out? It's well understood by now that it is a full console, and the console itself HAS been shown, if only briefly.
All the way through Nintendo's E3 demo, I was terrified that WiiU was JUST a controller add on for the Wii. It was honestly not that obvious that it was a completely new console, because of the way Reggie Fils-Aime and the developers were all talking about the controller so much.

I did look it up afterwards and was relieved to find that the rumours were correct, but I feel that the reveal was handled pretty badly. Although, maybe I didnt pay enough attention.

OT -
As mentioned above, Microsoft has Halo 4, 5 and 6 coming out, a remake of Halo Combat Evolved, Gears of War 3, Minecraft and who knows what else coming up, as well as enough money to buy any and all exclusivity rights to DLC and releases in the future if they wanted. I cant see any chance whatsoever that they wont be carrying on making new consoles, probably with Kinect integrated and some seriously beefed up hardware.

Im more curious to see what happens with Sony in the future following the security issues recently, and Nintendos future with the WiiU will be interesting given the mid generational release date.

Of course I didn't mean the entire company. Only an idiot would believe I meant that.

I understood you the first time.
I'm just saying you seem to believe Microsoft isn't making a profit.

EDIT- OBVIOUSLY MICROSOFT WILL NOT DIE. I simply mean that they will cease to make consoles. I didn't think I honestly needed to say that.
OF COURSE you needed to say that.

Microsoft is a company that deliberately releases inferior products at a loss in order to drive their competitors out of business.

I remember a time when Netscape was the best browser.
IE came along, it wasn't as good, but it was bundled free and installed automatically so people couldn't be arsed buying Netscape.

And that's how Microsoft treats the console market, too.
Sure, they care about making money, but they care about their competitors making less money more.

Why when you have legions of fanboys who claim it's a better service than even steam? Seriously I heard some fanboy ranting on some podcast to this host saying it's a better deal than PSN and steam. Despite MS charging more money for games that you can find for less than half the price in stores, and steam having insane deals often.

That's not to say XBL isn't a good service but it's just insane they charge for what's basically P2P services especially since they started implementing ads on OUR FRONT PAGES on OUR 360s.

Wish all I might... of course they will.
People will continue to buy up their products, not due to any intrinsic value of the product itself, but rather due to the brilliant marketing that presents the product to the public. Also due to business practices that involve cutting corners in production and subsequently cutting prices any time there is direct competition for a given product.

...dammit.

Microsoft built a great new customer base in offering the Xbox/360 to the non-PC crowd. While I was a PS2 fan over the original Xbox, I see the inherent problems Sony faced when the Xbox was released.
Out of the box hard drive and ethernet.
Big selling point considering how multiplayer online console gaming was poised to happen.
Then 360 came out first, with few titles worth mentioning at launch, but rapidly gained momentum, and when compared to the PS3 release price, much much more affordable.
And still the 360 outsells everything but the Wii. So I don't see a failure at all here. Kinect was a launch success in regards to casual gamers, though as a "core" game enthusiast I don't want or need the Kinect.
The Xbox market is pretty solid, and it'd take a massive fail on MS's part to put a dent in it. So I see them releasing another console, though preferably one that raises the bar rather than bumps it up a millimeter.

as much is i'd LIKE to see the xbox go away, realistically, not gonna happen unless they get tired of it or start losing money hand over fist.
though i do kinda agree they seem to be in a tough spot, (feel free to enlighten me if wrong) but aren't the 'exclusives' just Gears 3 and Halo 4? well exclusives that aren't for they're 'eye toy 2' (wanna talk about gimmicky bullshit, Kinect defines it, also, Fable doesn't count as exclusive, i can get it on Steam)

course that said :p Sony's done nothing to get me interested in anything they've shown, and the ONLY game I've heard about I'm interested in is multi platform :p

a potential problem is that Nintendos consoul is out in 2012 soney and microsoft wont be out till about 2014-1015 nintendo essentially has a 2-3 yeear window to grab the whole casual market, and the casual market allready has wii remotes to use with the WiiU so thell probly flock to it. I think the fate of microsoft as a video game company rests on Nintendos ability to turn the WiiU into another DS/Wii, if Nintendo continues their success and manages to win back some of the "hardcore" gamers microsoft may end up between a rock and a hard place, rember simply saying I wont buy WiiU because a new Soney/microsoft consoul is coming out cant realy be said because their still about 3 years away from the WiiU launch

*Im saying 3 years beacuse I remember last year at E3 soney said we are in year 4 of 9 of are ps3 plan so when the WiiU launches next year soneys consol will be about two years away though microsoft could be sooner as they launched a year earlyer then the ps3/wii, allso with both companies still trying to build move and kinect it seems kind of hard to imagine a new console soon

I honestly don't see the big deal about the WiiU, it looks cool, but I won't be buying it.
Why?
Because it honestly just looks like a lame board with a screen on it that will cost a LOT of cash. I think I'll stick with the xbox for the 3rd party titles.
