I've already started ranting about how the younger generations are getting worse and worse, and I'm only 18.

I know a 12 year old who has been involved in some pretty..adult..stuff. And she isn't the only one like that.

My friend also had a 6 year old call him a "F---ing Gay".

Not only does society slowly get worse, it's starting younger too.
Jesus, when I was in elementary school no one would have known what that word meant.

I'm with you on this. Society is changing for the worse.
I agree with you guys. Things are going to shit, but it's not any form of entertainment to blame, it's a lack of parenting.

This is true.

And this is very, very true.

Yep yep, welcome to the club. Parental care is mostly to blame, but thinking of other factors like peer pressure. God I sound like my parents, but I think that's the point!

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for
authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place
of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their
households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They
contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties
at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.
I believe these words were spoken by Plato or Socrates.

Whoa Reincarnated, whats with the jacking of me avatar? Oh well, best movie ever, am-I-right?

OT, I have to agree that society seems to be getting worse every day. In order to shorten what could be an incredibly long conversation, our society is going down the shitter, fast. And I agree it is because parents either dont care or dont pay enough attention to what is going on with their kids (which I suppose is another form of not caring)

Most of these problems would be solved if parents sat in on whatever activity they think is ruining their child.

If one of those panicking mothers who thought D&D was a satanic ritual actually watched their child play a game of it, they would have been embarassed that they had ever reacted as such.

Human nature doesn't change over periods of time. We're all going to be looking for a blame figure during our generation regardless of any previous knowledge. "Why? BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE SHIT."
(I'm placing my bets on virtual reality as being the scapegoat for 2020.)

Exactly. When people used to say "when I was your age I'd never have done that" there could have been maybe a 20-40 year difference in age from then to now, as it was parents or grandparents saying it. Now I'm finding myself saying that to people a whole 5 years younger.

The worst fact was that the kids mother was there when he said it. All she did was glare at us, as if the fact her child had been raised to swear was entirely our own fault, or that she found my friends accused 'gayness' to be insulting.

I am almost amused by thwe fact that the same thread that hopes to break the cycle had the next stage of it getting started. Though I have to admit, small kids who curse people twice their size to be cool is quite puzzling. A mean look and a punch or two solve that problem, though.

As for breaking the cycle - Not A God-Damn Chance. It's not that the medium is ruining people, it's people being shit. Stupid, arrogant, self-righteous assholes were always around, and they'll never go away. It's just that now there's no natural selection or random executions to get rid of them, so we see more and more appear. Xenophobic idiots will always be around to piss people off. Ignore them.

Yeah, but we can't possibly do anything to harm the precious children now can we? Fucking security cameras!

I don't think we'll break the cycle, but that leads me to wonder... What the hell are our children going to be doing that offends our sensibilities? I mean, we're the generation that enjoys Gears of War and Grand Theft Auto. What are they going to be doing that outrages us so, when plenty of us regularly enjoy running people over with cars, or regularly shooting/blowing up/curbstomping/ chainsawing in half our friends and complete strangers? This kinda frightens me a little.

This six year old did get punched in the face by your friend right?
Teach children discipline, it's a must.
You wouldn't, don't pretend you would. It hardly makes you any better.
I would.
Unless it was a girl, of course.
But I so would.

Well, speaking for myself I think that one of the problems is the constant evolution of humanity. You look at guys like Johnny Weismueller who was a swimming champion that played Tarzan in some of the old movies. He was an incredible athlete in his day, but nowadays his records are something of a joke. People (despite all of the talk about obesity, laziness, and other things) become stronger and more capable with each generation.

The thing is that this is also a factor with intelligence, and the thing is that kids tend to be inherantly smarter than their parent's generation, combined with attitudes about the capabilities of children that are mired back in the 1930s where kids as old as 12 are expected to be entertained by mindless toys. A youth from that time period probably couldn't get his head around a lot of current video games (even older adults have problems) which current kids are able to figure out fairly easily.

Today you have children getting involved in crime very early with the full knowlege of what they are doing, outgrowing toys VERY quickly, and seeking intellectual stimulation of a sort that utterly terrifies the older generation who using themselves as a comparison figure that what they are seeing must not be possible.

Please not that this intelligence does not come with maturity, but when you consider that you have young children who have allegedly found, loaded, and successfully employed firearms to do things like shoot babysitters, you need to really stop and look at the capabilities.

The generational issues are obvious when you say look at the "Heavy Metal" crowd for example. To some people there is a big differance between some creepy lyrics and album cover art and say an interactive experience where you have demons and such actually running around. Not saying that it's "right" but you can see how games take things to a higher level than the similar entertainment before hand, just as heavy metal took the conventions of things like "Tales From The Crypt" and took them even further to an extent.

Really the problem with never stop until society adjusts to the increasing capabilities of children. When child rearing is grounded in the same practices that have been around since the 1800s when you get down to it, you begin to see some of the problems.

Truthfully I have no idea how to solve the problem. Honestly given the intelligence, but lack of maturity held by kids a parent can't really just be their friend or let them do whatever they want. Shows like "The Gilmore Girls" show what I actually consider to be a very unhealthy mother/daughter relationship (despite women raving about it) that is not truely workable outside of fantasy, yet a lot of people want their parenting to be like that. Children, especially teens, need their parents to be authority figures not just close friends.

However being an authority figure to someone who is progressing faster than you ever did, well that can be difficult when you have less common ground with them at each paticular stage of development than you think you do.

Such are my thoughts. I will however never have children even if the oppertunity presented itself. I'd be concerned about passing my disabillities on even if it missed a generation or two. As depressing as it is, I myself think that this branch of the family tree needs to be snipped (and it's my own desician, not something anyone else told me. I wouldn't want anyone to turn out like me).

Yeah, look at the Soup, it's built on making fun of celebrities.

EDIT: Plus, we'll probably start bitchin when they all become a hive mind, because it's the new bad thing. Not saying it isn't bad, but you get the idea.

The Earth is degenerating these days. Bribery and corruption abound.
Children no longer mind their parents, every man wants to write a book,
and it is evident that the end of the world is fast approaching.
