I would say no.....

I mean "online" does certainly seem to be the future, but I think single player has a place in it

because MMORPG's and COD type games havnt killed singple player games yet (plus its a ocmpletley different thing)

I think that they will implement online in different ways other than keepong them sperate

my only worry is that in the future I dont want a crappy single player experience (such as left 4 dead or Borderlands)

It's not gone.

Batman: Arkham City, Deus Ex, and Skyrim are all massive, single-player-only games coming out this year. This isn't to mention all the other games with a good multiplayer and a focus on single-player (Uncharted 3 for example).

Single player provides a tight storytelling and world-exploring experience that many multiplayer games can't pull off.

Nah, but there will be a bigger role for coop in lots of game genres. It's allready shifting that way.
I would also not be suprised if future 'pure' singleplayer games get options to invite your friends to walk around in your game (a future TES game for example, not skyrim)

I certainly hope not, I personally still enjoy playing games without lag, grief, subscriptions, race hate, homophobia, flaming and general abuse.

Long live the single player!!

I seriously doubt that. Single player is just becoming more and more in depth, with fleshed out stories and characters. plus there are gamers out there who do take single player of multiplayer. The Mass Effect series would be a prime example.

Saying single player will be killed by multiplayer is like saying because we have FPS no one will play fighting games anymore. Online multiplayers cannot be truly immersive as a good single-player, think if Amnesia was multiplayer. Would anyone of screamed when the invisible water monster just starts tearing you apart out of nowhere?

Perhaps, but not in the forseeable future.

Every now and again someone says, "Oh man, remember when games were all about single player rather than teabagging noobs?" It always makes me want to slap them around the face with a list of upcoming games.

Seriously, look at the stuff that's coming out in 2011-12. Most of it is either single player only or has a significant single player component.

The Arcade?

Like this one: http://www.londontrocadero.com/play

Nah, Single Player will make a triumphant return as soon as every game starts spamming Bookface and Twitter - so everyone will block them. And we'll be back full circle.

Probably the consoles will see a lot less Single Player, due to their market, but then they'll just be more single players playing MMOs.

I think that there are a lot of things that can be done with the internet and games that we haven't seen yet, so I definitely think that there is a major future for incorporating the internet/multiplayer in games. There will probably be fewer and fewer games that are 100% single player as we figure out how to use multiplayer in new ways. I don't really think that this is something we need to be concerned about, because I think these features will come in addition to what we already have. There will probably always be demand for epic stories in games, so those won't disappear, but they may be enhanced by somehow incorporating multiplayer aspects. Who knows what the future brings?

I also think that there will always be demand for games that can be played offline or in solitude, so that option needs to stay available as well.

They've been saying that single-player was dying for ages, but it never will, it's a totally seperate experience to multiplayer. It'd be like books dying out because plays got really popular.

I love a good co-op experiance a lot and online is decent.

To be honest I buy games almost always for a good single player experiance I rarely but a multiplayer oriented game unless it supports local 4 player which is less and less these days

It looks like none of us think so.

TBH you can pretty much play WoW as a single player game. Which is what I'll do if I have to.

Borderlands? Crappy singleplayer? what are you talking about, anyway. . .
I don't see much future for single player games, as companies seem to be realizing, "hey if we pit players against each other then they'll want to win right? And if they want to win than they will take any need necessary to do that right? So we can get them to pay us more money right?" Now I know, some people aren't willing or can't afford to pay for extra content, but at least half of them have already bought the game. This goes primarily for shooters though.

As for MMOs I don't see them actually replacing the standard RPG, after all Dragonage (the first one at least) was a very well made game with a good gameplay and a good story and had nothing to do with online play. On the other hand MMOs do seem to be surpassing traditional RPGs at this point in time, I bet this trend will continue, but we won't see the end of traditional RPGs until we see the end of DnD.

The problem I see for single player games is that AI hasn't been making much progress simply due to the fact that you don't need it, allow me to explain. In CoD the AI is stupid and easy to outmatch, in Timesplitters the AI is simple but challenging, Timesplitters offers Arcade* play with any combination of humans and AI, CoD only allows arcade play with other players primarily via the internet. In defense of the companies, why spend hundreds of dollars making fake people, when you could just connect them with real people? As a result you'll notice that AI hasn't really gotten better than it was in say, Unreal Tournament, since I don't know, Gears of War.

In racing and fighting games I don't see any reason that it won't go in the way of internet only, after all each really has just featured: Cutscene; Arcade Match; Cutscene; Arcade Match. The events being only loosely tied together, and sure each one will always feature its own crappy story mode, but no, that will go the way of the "crappy single player experience."

Rhythm games haven't changed since they came out and won't change ever.

Sports games will go towards internet play only, but I'm not sure anyone cares

Strategy games already rely heavily on online play and that won't decrease in anyway, whether their single player campaigns stick around is anybodies guess (though I say so long as blizzard is around)

So in short: YES I do see singleplayer reaching a point where it is just a weak background for those without internet or that just need a break from multiplayer

*arcade play includes all non-story modes, where people play with the same availabilities (deathmatches, capture the flag, etc.)

Sweet Jesus I hope not, the only reason I buy the Call of Duty games is for the single player campaign. The MASSIVE set pieces are so excellently done, I would hate to lose them all together.

Not in the foreseeable future, not. What if you are somewhere with crap connection? There's going to be places with lousy net for quite some time.

Even if there won't, there's no reason why you'd have to have all games be multiplayer.

That makes me cry for so many reasons, most notably that you're saying you play a shooter for the scenery.

So many reasons to cry at the thought of offline single player disappearing.
I have a pretty strong dislike of playing online, because of the sheer number of elitist asshats outweighing the number of people who are fun to play with. I don't see how you view online as potentially being exclusively the future of gaming, as an isolated system is inarguably more reliable than a connection to an online network.

Hey, you know that arcades still exist right?
