As long as there is demand for single player, there will always be at least one company out there that is willing to capitalize on it.

Die out here in the U.S. but stay popular in Japan and other countries? Probably not.

Multiplayer is hot right now. So your going to hear more about it then single player experiences.

However, saying that that single player games will go extinct is of course, stupid and extremist. There will always be a place for single player games. Just because multiplayer has taken center stage for a few games doesn't mean it is the most important feature for all games. Hell, it's still a minority of games that are multiplayer focused. The ones that are mainly multiplayer focused are just more talked about due to it's nature.

For every multiplayer oriented game two or three single player games are being made, or have been made.

Edit: Also i question your suggestion that arcades have gone extinct. Mostly because the only reason why they shut down in my town was because of drug dealers, and there is at least one in most large cities I have been to. Arcades are still around, and doing quiet well.

I don't think it'll ever come to that, and I deplore today's extreme focus on multiplayer.

But in the unlikely event it ever does, I'll give up gaming for good and just stick to whatever games I already own.

They're both completely different entities. There's room enough in the world to love both and that's how I choose to do it.

Hopefully, single player only games should be gotten rid of. It would be nice for every game to have multiplayer support and the design to match it, even if it's just simple co-op or versus scoring systems. Lately I've been finding games that don't have any competetive aspects to be completely shallow, I'd rather see more multiplayer games.

I can't be the only person that never plays online multiplayer ever and has zero interest in it. Singleplayer is here to stay/

Nah, but there will be a bigger role for coop in lots of game genres. It's allready shifting that way.
I would also not be suprised if future 'pure' singleplayer games get options to invite your friends to walk around in your game (a future TES game for example, not skyrim)
I Would like to see that, If Local Co-Op Gaming rises aswell.

Proof that it is unlikely to happen. I'm sure there are many out there who share your views, myself included, and thus the industry would deal itself a killing blow by doing this. I don't think single player is in any danger really, its just that multiplayer usually gets more publicity.
you would say that, at first, but then you would hear about a new game and figure, "sure I'll try it out" you'll play it and actually enjoy it.

or the change will be so gradual that you will hardly notice is lacking until you go back and play your 6th gen consuls

Jim sums up my thoughts quite nicely.
See thing is though is that it is so easy to put a multiplayer into a game now that if you don't have one it looks lazy. Also about the lack of replay value, multiplayer makes replay value just by being decent, in a single player only game, in order to make replay value you have to have interesting enough mechanics and major variety in procedure as well as pleasing ascetics and satisfying sound, a single player game lacking in any of those will find itself not worth playing after one run throw. Most of the final fantasies I would classify as a game lacking replay (man blitzball would have been so awesome with Lan play)

Could you imagine playing a game like Oblivion, Fallout or Tomb Raider as a multiplayer? I can and it kept me awake for HOURS!!
I'm hoping it kept you awake out of fear. Multiplayer Oblivion and Fallout sounds horrifying.

No. Arcades died out because consoles gave people the ability to have the same experience without leaving their homes. There's no way multiplayer could somehow...negate...single player modes in the same way.

I didn't see anyone saying arcades have gone extinct and the subject has nothing to do with whether or not single-player will go extinct, the question is: "will it take the route arcade games did?" as in go from the number one thing in gaming to being a mere backdrop.

I question where you are getting your numbers from, what you classify as a single/multiplayer game, and if your considering any Generation of consul other than the current one (it is 7th right?) because this is the first time that networking with consul games has been a standard thing (yes I know that PS2 could handle online, but that was an add on). In the not to distant future, Xbox Live will be free (well ok Microsoft is greedy so maybe not), and PSN will be secure and both will be much faster connections and multiplayer with continue to thrive, you see the reason that multiplayer is big right now is because so much supports it.

Oh and I wouldn't say Arcades are doing well, I'd say that their surviving
