Will the Marine Corps put "Odinist" on my dog tags?

I'm enlisting in the US Marine Corps in 2 years and I'm an Odinist. I was wondering if the Corps will allow me to put that as my religious preference on my ID tags. Also, will they allow me to have an Odinist symbol on my gravestone (Thor's hammer, Valknut) if the worst were to come to pass? Thanks!

Curious, is this an ironic kinda thing, or do you 'for real' believe in the tree of the cosmos etc.?

OT: I'd have thought they only recognise certain religions, but obviously not all that sure.

For gravestones I know they can do a generic Neo-Pagan pentagram, but I think that's it. As far as I know you can list anything as your religion on your dog tag.

what's ironic about this?

You are asking if I believe in Yggdrasil as we humans call it. I cannot give you one strait answer to that question. But I can say that I belive that our universe in unending, infinite. I also believe in separate realities. I can also say that I believe that our reality and these separate realities are connected. Now if you or any of my Odinist folk wish to describe this connection in the fashion of a magical "Tree" then so be it. What we perceive as true, is true, but only to ourselves.

not in boot camp, they gave us the choice of Catholic or Christian. They said we can put whatever the hell we want on them afterward but we were going to be normal on Parris Island

well that's really lame. I'm not some devil worshiping Wiccan. I am a germanic heathen and when I die I would like to be identified as one. But thank you for your answer :)

He's super old though, like 30 or something. I'm sure the Marines has come a long way since then. OK, so I'm not so sure on that, but I figure they'd have been sued by now if they didn't allow a decent amount of options.

Yeah, there's no hazing in the Marines anymore either :p
I'm going to assume that any hazing that took place was very homoerotic. I mean the Marines is technically part of the Navy, and we all know what happens In the Navy.

I'd hope they've moved forward since then. As you said, what US marine described is a lawsuit waiting to happen, since it's a complete violation of the establishment clause.

Not to mention stupid; Catholics /are/ Christians. If they wanted to do something stupid like that, least they could have done is said Catholic or Protestant. It would still be illegal as all get out, but at least it wouldn't be a contradiction in terms and a jab at Catholics.

It's funny cause my step-dad would probably kill you for comparing him to someone in the Navy XD

It's the men's department :p

In all seriousness it is the most homoerotic organization I've ever been in. Ever watched Jarhead? :p
No, but I hear Jake Gyllenhaal gets pretty close to nekkid in it. I've heard your average gym has a fair amount of homoeroticism. It certainly doesn't get more Fruedian than trying to show other dudes how "big" you are.

...Seriously? They broke religion down into a false dichotomy which itself relies on a miscategorization of one of the two choices? (Catholicism is a christian denomination, after all)

When I went through, the most pagan thing you could have on your dogtags was 'Protestant - other'.

But that was 12 years ago.

OP, don't be scared of that part of the USMC... the environment messes with your head a little but you'll get over it :)

Also boot camp is the best experience in the USMC, you won't believe it when you're in it but give it a year after graduation and you'll be nostalgic
ha when I first saw jarhead for the first time I was like "oh please let it be like that"

Thank you Obama for the repeal of don't ask don't tell.

You do know that Catholics are Christians.... right?

So what You're saying is, that they gave you the option between Christian and Christian.
