In the Army, I was given the choice of christian, catholic, jewish or islamic. So myself and a few others joined the cult of NO-REL-PREF.

You do know that Catholics are Christians.... right?

So what You're saying is, that they gave you the option between Christian and Christian.
Very different burial rites there. The only reason a soldier has a religion listed on their dog tags is in case they die, those who find them will know if there's any extra-religious-respectful way they should treat the body. It has nothing to do with proclaiming for a particular deity's "team".

Isn't Tor's hammer called Mjölnir? Or is that a different interpretation?

quick google tells me Valknut isnt that hammer just a symbol associated with neo-paganism

funny bit in wiki : "According to the Anti-Defamation League, the symbol has been appropriated by some white supremacists for use as a racist symbol"

offtopic, how certain can a person be when he says he will be enlisting in 2 years, thats a long time

http://rockbeyondbelief.com/2011/07/22/my-atheist-flying-spaghetti-monster-military-dog-tags/

Here's a guy that had a decent struggle to put atheism and the Flying Spaghetti Monster onto his dog tags. Granted, this is just the army, but it shows that some change can totally happen and that plenty of religious beliefs are...accepted to some degree, including atheist belief.

Edit: Having read the story again, I realized that he had his custom-replaced because the army botched his. Still, he's allowed to wear those dog tags, so yeah.

I know this has nothing to do with the topic, but I saw a quote today that made me both laugh and cringe.

"The deadliest weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle!" - by some American general.

Let's be honest, the USMC are good and all, but there are plenty of other military units the world over who would kick their asses. I hate patriotic jingoistic crap like that, it really hacks me off.

Curious, is this an ironic kinda thing, or do you 'for real' believe in the tree of the cosmos etc.?

OT: I'd have thought they only recognise certain religions, but obviously not all that sure.
This is probably going to start a flame war, but why is Odinism any less plausible than other religions?

Cool religion, so the video game Viking : battle for Asgard is actually a highly religious game for you! God of War must be an unholy offending abomination however. Oooooh I know you should totally sue them for portraying your religion in a negative light. Could you imagine if god of war was about killing the popular religious gods of today? it would cause world wars!

This is your chance to stand up for your religion! that in itself is unfair!

Why would GOW be more offensive to a "odinist" then a christian?

All right all right I admit I posted without thinking but this still gives me the idea that I should claim I worship zeus and sue the god of war developers.

In all seriousness it is the most homoerotic organization I've ever been in. Ever watched Jarhead? :p
No, but I hear Jake Gyllenhaal gets pretty close to nekkid in it. I've heard your average gym has a fair amount of homoeroticism. It certainly doesn't get more Fruedian than trying to show other dudes how "big" you are.
I'm joining the Royal Marines in a few years.

Upon hearing the word "marine", my friend started detailing an initiation ritual some guys did in US marine corps boot camp that involved cross dressing and trampling. 'nuff said.

Well your question has been answered, but this bit made me curious, is an Odinist just someone who believes in the old Norse gods or is it something different, like a monotheistic version?

The problem is that if you have to face the USMC they won't go in alone, and you are all in for non-consensual sodomy.

I mean, the Coast Guard, National Guard and the USMC could probably invade most European countries alone.
