Valknut...? I thought it was Mjölner...
quick google tells me Valknut isnt that hammer just a symbol associated with neo-paganism

funny bit in wiki : "According to the Anti-Defamation League, the symbol has been appropriated by some white supremacists for use as a racist symbol"

offtopic, how certain can a person be when he says he will be enlisting in 2 years, thats a long time
well im graduating in 2 years. so that's when i can enlist.

Fun story: after your initial issue, any further ID tags are purchased on your dime, usually at an off-post supplier. Thus, while you are required to have name and SSN on the tag, the religion field is really up to you.

Of course, you should keep in mind that said field is largely used so they know how you'd prefer handling of your remains and so forth. I doubt they'd give a Viking burial.

I'm an Odinist.
Well your question has been answered, but this bit made me curious, is an Odinist just someone who believes in the old Norse gods or is it something different, like a monotheistic version?
Odinism is the modern-day reincarnation of the faith that was observed by the Germanic peoples of north-western Europe before the introduction of Christianity to the continent. But yes we do believe in the "old" Gods as many people may come to call them. The king of our pantheon is Odin, the wisest of our Gods. We try as hard as we can to distance ourselves from monotheist traditions. We do not cower to The Gods, we do not lay down to get the shit kicked out of us in the hope that our gods will protect us like a shepherd protects his flock. We are a warrior faith, we approach our gods with heads held high, proud. we defend ourselves, our kin, and our folk with our own hands, not with unbacked fearful prayer to a god that demands obedience and fear.
Thanks for the comprehensive answer, although I meant monotheistic as in only believing in Odin, not quite your interpretation. I would like to point out that not all monotheistic religions are exactly the same though, the Sikhs for example are expected to be active in protecting themselves and others.

For gravestones I know they can do a generic Neo-Pagan pentagram, but I think that's it. As far as I know you can list anything as your religion on your dog tag.
well that's really lame. I'm not some devil worshiping Wiccan.
Devil ... woshiping ... wiccan. Uh-huh. Well, I think I'm pretty much done with this thread after reading that.
ok even i'll admit that when i pressed post, i probably should have worded that differently. my bad

im just a little tired of people confusing Norse Paganism with Satanism or some sort of witch cult. we are normal people. we don't sacrifice humans and we don't use the sacred runes to supposedly tell our futures. once again, my bad.
My lover is a Wiccan and with that in mind, I can tell you a fun little fact: there are so many different theological positions in Wicca. For instance, a Wiccan can choose to worship Lucifer, certainly, but some also choose to worship multiple deities, goddess worship, and some even follow the monotheistic Abrahamic God. My lover falls into this last category; she chooses to believe in the Christian God. Funny, innit? Wiccans are encouraged to believe in whatever they want to.

As for your Odinism being recognized by the army, I hope it works out for you!
really now? well i suppose you do learn something new everyday.

but how does that work. she believes in the Abrahamic god, but how does she worship him that sets her apart from the Christians or Jews?
Well, you see, in the case of Christians, Jews, and Muslims, the Abrahamic followers don't often look towards "magic" or "casting" in a favorable light. Even then, she's not a normal wicca. She mixes a lot of her wicca principles in with something else. What it is, I won't say here, but the purposes of both the mixture and Wiccan itself has always been described to me as an "add-on" religion, by which they mean it builds upon an existing religion.

I know this has nothing to do with the topic, but I saw a quote today that made me both laugh and cringe.

"The deadliest weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle!" - by some American general.

Let's be honest, the USMC are good and all, but there are plenty of other military units the world over who would kick their asses. I hate patriotic jingoistic crap like that, it really hacks me off.
Isn't that from Full Metal Jacket?

In all seriousness it is the most homoerotic organization I've ever been in. Ever watched Jarhead? :p
No, but I hear Jake Gyllenhaal gets pretty close to nekkid in it. I've heard your average gym has a fair amount of homoeroticism. It certainly doesn't get more Fruedian than trying to show other dudes how "big" you are.
I go to an average gym, where any homoerotic attempts to compare wangs are met with "OH GOD WHY DO YOU EXIST PLEASE SHOVE OFF D:" (True story where I was a spectator, I'm too modest to try anything like that). Then again, I'm Canadian, so maybe we're more mature about this kind of thing.

I have no idea.

But purely out of interest, can I ask why you are an Odinist?

I feel as insulted from this post as you must feel when one confuses Norse Paganism with other forms of Paganism.

First off, neither Satanism nor Wicca perform human sacrifice. Only the most outlandish and frowned upon forms of Satanism even think it's something okay, but even then they won't do it. I will admit most organized theistic Satanic or Luciferian groups are filled with wack-jobs, but a majority form no alliance with such groups and work alone or with a small group of friends, and at that an even bigger are atheistic, and those are probably the most tolerable of the groups anyway.

Second, Wicca and Satanism are very different. Wicca is about returning to the goddess and becoming one with her again. Satanism(or more so left-hand path religions) are about separating one's self from the universe and attaining godhood. While the goals are slightly similar in the terms of becoming a god, the means are different, as Satanists wish to become their own, but Wiccans wish to come together.

Third, devil worship is hardly excepted by any religions. Satanists hate the term "devil" and also don't worship their gods, just respect them as one would a superior.

Finally, you don't have to be Wiccan or Satanic to perform magic. Magic is a practice of it's own, and there are even Odinist forms of magic, so while you yourself might not practice it, that doesn't color the religion as a whole. Also, just because one practices magic doesn't mean they aren't "normal" either.

That's wicced, dude.

OT: Your faith is better than Christianity. You deserve it more than some Christ lover deserves a cross.

Probably the best thing I've seen in years. It's a rainbow bridge to a mead hall where fallen warriors eat and drink before going off to fight.

At least I think that's what it is. It's fucking awesome.

I wasn't talking about wangs though, I was talking of things that gym rats do compare all the time. Biceps and such. Dude, bro, I'm up to 18", check it.

I don't see much of that, either. Everyone seems painfully aware that it's homoerotic. :p

I'm joining the Royal Marines in a few years.

Upon hearing the word "marine", my friend started detailing an initiation ritual some guys did in US marine corps boot camp that involved cross dressing and trampling. 'nuff said.
Haha, don't worry about it - the Royal Marine initiations are way, way more homoerotic.

And when I say homoerotic, I mean, full on Gay.

Seriously, if you want to join the RM, get comfortable with men, get really, really comfortable with them.

Are you a white supremacist Odinist, Nordic racial purity Odinist, or are you an anti-racist Odinist?

I'm fairly comfortable with other men. Even then, I have an insurance policy. A very unnerving insurance policy.

short answer: because it is in my blood and its what feels right in my heart.

long answer: because being told my entire life by the parents and the catholic community as a whole that i was an abomination against their god for being gay was kind of a bummer. a suicide inducing bummer. But even though i was a catholic for my entire life i can say that i was not once very happy with it. i always had an empty feeling inside. even when i met a bunch of gay Christians i still felt distant. So i looked back east, to my ancestral homeland. to the faith to my ancestors. a faith over 8000 years old and rich with a proud history. hope that answered your question :)
