Will this be the most boring generation yet?

For AAA games most definitely. My enthusiasm for them is mostly gone, I don't really care about the new consoles.

But indy is a different thing. Apotheon showed me that gaming isn't down for the count yet. I adored it, I thought it was fresh and yet familiar at the same time. Shadowrun Dragonfall became my favourite game of all time and it was crowdfunded.

I think in a lot of ways indy development is in an exciting place, PC gaming offers a viable platform for it. As long as you don't need a game to have Hollywood movie level production values, this generation could be interesting.

I doubt I'm going to get anything more than a luke-warm game from either Sony or MS this generation. Now I have to slog through all the crappy indie titles to find the gems. At least I found Legend of Grimrock, because that game was the best thing in years to me.

Too soon to tell, this is still the stage of a console generation where most people haven't actually upgraded yet because the consoles are still sitting at close to full price.

The best games normally come out when it's less risky and the player base is established.

This Christmas period onwards is when I'm banking on the Fallouts and the Last of Us type games start coming out.

When do you think the PS4 and xbone will get their killer app?

average game after average game with nothing very inspiring on the horizon.

When do you think will be the turning point? if ever.
Your title hurts my soul. No, no this will not be "the most boring generation yet". I would have to say the most boring generation was in medieval times. I mean, you were probably poor, a surf, and going to be working the fields from sun up till sun down until the day you died a horribly violent painful death.

Oh, games? OOOOOHHHHHHHHH, console generation...

1) I don't think there is such a thing as a "killer app". People have different tastes and as such value different games as better than others.

2) That's just your opinion (see point #1).

3) When people find a game that fits their particular tastes and wants.

I begged off buying a new console when the PS4/XBone came out. At least for myself, I bought one of each for my office (I run a team of developers, so duh).

Frankly, I don't find either machine all that impressive from a technical or user interface perspective. Obviously it's likely that the software currently written for both devices is not as optimized as it could be and that over time developers will be able to eke more performance out of them, but the first few games we tried had horrible issues with frame rate stuttering and audio streaming that made me wonder why I had spent so much money on these machines, considering my 5 year old PC has better performance.

That being said I do know that traditionally console makers have used exclusives to draw in purchases, but when was the last time that this actually worked in any measurable way?

Honestly if you love games, particularly innovative ones, the place to be is still on the PC due to the dominance of Steam. Love or hate Valve, it's impossible to miss the fact that they've caused not only a renaissance in PC gaming, but also in good independent gaming releases. Out of my top 5 games last year, almost all of them were for PC exclusively or released without a publisher.

For me, right now it's not some "killer app" that will make me buy a console, the reason why I'm not buying one is because I don't feel any need to and I actually feel the market places for both PS4 and Xbox are kind of shitty. It's actually turning me off because they're so obviously inferior.

I'd be more likely to buy an Xbox to use as a media center for my house than to play games on...

Video games have been lame for quite a while now.

Industry crash soon, fellow stalkers.
