Well hello there.
You may or may not have seen my earlier thread about some suggestions for a gaming laptop, and I was wondering wether I should get an Alienware m15x, but thanks to your suggestions I figured out that there where cheaper alternatives, so I found this one instead. It costs 8.600kr ( around $1.500) Here is a link to it
http://www.shg.dk/Baerbar/ASUS-Baerbar-U53JC-XX055V-15.6-2214941.html
Sorry, but its in danish, but you shoud be able to figure it out... I hope

Its an ASUS laptop 15.6 screen
4GB RAM
HDD 640GB
... and so forth, you can see it all in the link under specifikationer.
Check it out please.

So is this any good. I ask you this because I know jack shit about PC's ;)

I wouldn't go with a laptop with the 310m if the main purpose is gaming - try to aim for one of the cards at the top of the "Class 2" list on notebookcheck

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-310M.22439.0.html

I didn't see the display resolution listed anywhere, but I would make sure to find a laptop with at least 1600x900, ideally 1920x1080 on a 15" screen.

gaming at Full HD resolution is a great experience, even with older games, but you need at least 5830M or better (AMD) or perhaps 435M or 540M (nvidia).

I did read that, and I must say it worried me a bit. Do you have any suggestions?

I just found a new one thats even cheaper, and what I can see, it is a bit better, but this one only have an i5 processer while the other has an i7 processer.
Check this one out

I would highly suggest that you do not purchase a gaming laptop. Gaming laptops are impractical and will not give you the best experience playing.

I would recommend that you split your budget, spend 5-600 on a cheap yet capable laptop for taking notes, doing work on the road, light gaming, etc, and spend the remaining $1000 on building a gaming computer. Even if you need to purchase a keyboard / mouse (which you would soon do with a gaming laptop) and a monitor $800 is plenty to make a capable rig, out performing a $1500 laptop for sure. Plus you will have the ability to upgrade parts and overclock.

Alot of people has recommended that I buy a desktop instead of a laptop, but I still have a couple of months to go in school, so I have to buy a laptop, and I want to play games on it, so I need a gaming laptop. Besides, I dont have room for a desktop, and to be honest, I dont like them ;)

I would really recommend you listen to those people and build a desktop.

Trust me - a gaming laptop might seem like a really good idea, but they're not viable at all; you're going to be balancing cost, performance, and portability.

It makes a lot more sense to build a desktop and get a netbook on the side.

Also I am positive that you have enough room for a desktop.

If you have a table, you have room for a desktop. They're not that big. My bedroom was a boxroom, and I still had more than enough space for a desktop.
Listen. I think I have made myself clear. I DONT WANT A DESKTOP. You arent excactly helping me when you keep telling me "Get a desktop, its so much better", maybe so, but thats not what i'm looking for, I only want laptops

Why not, exactly?

jeezus people, give the OP a break, he already said he doesn't want a desktop and needs some help selecting a laptop that he can game on - nothing wrong with that.

I can sympathize, as I game exclusively on a laptop as well.

@irreducibilli, what is your maximum budget?

also, do you mind if the laptop is really heavy and bulky?

what is the absolute minimum battery life you can live with?

And will you be running any other intensive programs on this laptop? (e.g., photoshop, 1080p video editing, encoding, disc authoring)if so, which applications?

My maximum budget is around 10.000kr. ($2.000). I dont really care wether its really big and bulky, but I would prefer a PC that has a pwetty design. Battery life is no problem, I always keep it plugged in almsot all the time anyway, so thats no problem. Only intense programs I will be running is probably games and such, no such thing as photoshop or anything. Also, thanks for you help ;)

EDIT: I also need a PC that is already on the market since my other PC just stopped working yesterday, so I need a new one right away for school.

Gaming on a laptop is obviously not the cheapest or best solution, but I understand where you're coming from, as I have been exclusively gaming on a laptop for a couple of years.

I've found that the experience gaming on a lower resolution simply cannot compare to a 1600x900 or 1920x1080 display.

If you can wait another month or so, you will see a lot of new Sandy Bridge laptops come to market.

Envy 15 is a great machine. AFAIK, it is the only thin (1.05") and portable laptop that can deliver decent frame rates for demanding games at 1920x1080, all detail settings maxed. It is also available with 4 DIMM slots (up to 16GB RAM), USB 3.0 and dual Intel SSDs in Raid0, making it a powerful workhorse in intensive apps like CS5, etc.

cons
- crappy battery life
- no optical drive
- the case is metal and acts as a heat sink, so it gets very hot on the bottom near the power supply if you run demanding apps or games while plugged in to AC power
- it's been discontinued and can only be bought from resellers or refurb

Sager(Clevo), Asus, MSI and Dell(aka Alienware) make a number of laptops that are able to handle demanding games as well, but they are significantly bigger, less portable and not great battery life either.
for an idea of a few good models, take a look on [link]http://www.xoticpc.com[/link] or [link]http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=product_customed&model_name=NP5160[/link]
- go for something with 5830M or better (AMD) or 435M or better (NVIDIA), look for the laptop cards near the top of the Class 2 list or bottom of the Class 1 list on notebookcheck
- I would not consider any laptop with less than 1600x900, 1680x1050 or 1920x1080 display for gaming

Thanks for the tips, but I think I have already made my decision... unless someone comes up with a really good reason why I shouldnt buy this laptop. Its an Asus G53JW gaming laptop
Heres a link
http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=eV4F8vu0VnKGp0nw
I just cant wait a month because I need a PC for school and my laptop just stopped working a couple of days ago, so I need one asap.
So if anyone can come up with a valid reason why I shouldnt buy the Asus G53JW, then speak now, or be forever silent.

Thank you all for your help

The 53J should be just fine, and I highly recommend you go with the FullHD (1920x1080) display option. the 1366x768 display is not a good resolution for gaming on a 15" laptop.

Alright, so I made my decision, and I want to thank you all for your help. I appreciate it, you guys helped more than you think
