Willing to consider: Scr/EMO

Ok, I am in a mood to try and expand my musical horizons. Now due to events I found myself drawn away from music around the area of 2004-2007 at the height of the ScrEmo period. So in the interest of not just completely ignoring a period of musical history I am somewhat remotely interested in hearing some of the works of that period that are actually of merit.

I have some outside contact with groups such as "In this Moment", and "Bullet for my valentine" Both of which I can see at least some merit in.

So I am asking for the best suggestions that can be mustered. Make your case, what is representative of this musical period, whats the songs and bands who were worth hearing from this brief period?

Side note: One thing, Not really interested in the neo/bubblegum punk movement that spawned out of the bosom of Green Day and the like.

Alexisonfire. Post-hardcore brilliance that unfortunately broke up a few months ago. Arguably, they were one of the pioneering bands of the "screamo" genre. The good thing about Alexisonfire though is that they're not just superficially screaming and dressing for the sake of a scene. To be honest, they kinda look like normal guys...And Dallas Green has a great voice.

I'm not sure if I can find any other bands of that specific genre that I like though so that could well be all I can give you...

EDIT: When I said "pioneering", I actually meant "popularising"...My bad.

Also, other bands that I've just thought of that fit the genre are Thursday and Poison the Well. I'm not a fan of Poison the Well's older stuff but Thursday are awesome.

Screamo, huh? I think that's what you're asking for, right?

I can't say that I am a huge fan of the genre but I have to admit that there were a few bands during that period that rocked my socks.

To be slightly more specific, there was Underoath.


Now, I wouldn't exactly call them screamo because of the derogatory context of the term. Maybe a light, highly melodic metalcore. No one cares about the genre though. We care about the music.

In 2004 Underoath released They're Only Chasing Safety. It was one of the earlier albums I picked up in my musical career and has always defined my taste for the harder music. Aaron Gillespie's vocals just rang when contrasted with Spencer Chamberlain's screams. The back and forth became pretty much necessary for me to enjoy the style because I am a fan of delicious melodies.


In 2006 they released Define the Great Line, an album that I will still go to bat for as the best hard album of all time. The whole album has an arc following the challenges and desperation that we all face as we try to grow into the people we know we need to be. Back during the twilight of my high school days it was a struggle that was extremely real to me and the album will always hold a certain poignancy because of that.


They've released a couple of albums since then but none have had the appeal that these two albums have always held for me. Maybe that point in my life has just passed but it just isn't the same as the good old days.

Yes it did, thank you both. Yes that is essentially what I am looking for, I apologize for the negative connotation, Ive simply have never heard of it referred to as anything other than EMO or screamo. It never was a type of music that really spoke to me, but I know there are certainly a few good tracks in there somewhere. Would gladly take any more suggestions.

The first bands that come to my mind when I hear "emo" are Taking Back Sunday and Brand New but they're both on the softer side of the spectrum.


It sounds like you're looking more at music that's closer to the post-hardcore side of things, which I don't tend to look at much; you could try early stuff by The Blackout or maybe Leathermouth. That's the extent of my knowledge here.

I enjoy your taste in music. Not nearly enough people listen to Brand New anymore. Granted, I didn't really get into them until after they moved past the Deja Entendu days into the moodier rock seen on God and the Devil Are Raging Inside Me and Daisy.

Also, thinking of Brand New brought mewithoutYou back into mind. Combine some of the best self-aware lyrics with amazing music delivered in an a highly unusual fashion and you end up with one of my favorite bands of all time. Go figure.

Here's a good list of albums with screaming in them that aren't screamo (it's screamo, not ScrEmo. Don't worry, it's a legitimate genre, I just don't recommend to people who aren't used to harsh vocals). The genre you're probably looking for is post-hardcore, and so most of the bands in the list play post-hardcore.

Now wait a cotton-picking minute.

I will be the first to admit that metal is not my thing. At all. I've had my younger brother attempt to convert me to As I Lay Dying all my life and frankly I am entirely sick of it. However, while I personally can't stand the music and the culture behind it doesn't mean I can't appreciate it on some level.

I guess my point here is that you really come off as just bashing a couple bands without really giving a good justification for it. You just tell the OP not to listen to a band that he sorta sees merit in and then give no justification as to why other then saying he'll end up listening to other bands. I may agree with your sentiments but I will play the devil's advocate and at least ask that you give some justification as to why you make such claims.

On a higher note, I've looked at your list and I agree with a lot of your choices (Acknowledging TREOS and Thrice puts you in high standing in my book).

I mentioned Thursday in my post, a band that was in your list. Someone else recommended Brand New, another band in your list. You also commended mewithoutYou, a band that someone else mentioned. I don't understand you advising the OP not listen to anything posted in this thread and then recommending bands that have already been mentioned... Also just because you state that you're "pretty knowledgeable in this kind of music" doesn't make your opinions correct.

Aside from those annoying parts in your post I have to state how impressed I am with your list.

I have loved RX Bandits for soooo long. Glassjaw were one of my first forays into what you call "harsh vocals", with the album Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence.

Haven't listened to Thrice in ages but still enjoy them a lot; I remember hearing them on Burnout Revenge lol. I should also thank you for reminding me about He Is Legend, a band I heard about a few months ago but never got around to chasing up an album.

Can't say much about the other bands on your list though...except for not liking the others that I have heard...
