So what's the big deal? Yeah it's sad that something beloved by so many is going away and it's been around for a while, but it's the internet and software we're talking about. You might not be able to grab it from their website but it'll still be around somewhere. Sure it'll probably be incompatible when window 9 comes around but it'll probably also run in compatibility mode or something.

It's not like they stopped producing a certain car and you can't buy it anymore.

With the removal of the online functionality, one has to believe that includes winamp remote. Which I use a lot. I really don't want to switch to iTunes and its 'airplay' functionality, because iTunes is garbage.

This is terrible news! The first time I got internet access was 97, and when I found my very first music file online, the site linked me up to winamp. I been using nothing but winamp. I tried itunes, I tried media player, and quite frankly I just don't trust itunes or any other media player. I went ahead and downloaded their latest installer. Winamp may be shutting down, but no way in hell am I going to stop using winamp. I will just have to make sure to completely backup the installer and never lose it.

Bye Bye WinAmp, you were the best... and then VLC came along and basically killed any other player..
well i think foobar2000 is still in front regarding audio players.
the sheer amount of what you can make foobar2000 do or look like is amazing.
ie the reason i left winamp.

That's a shame. I still use it for music, and I have used it since the early 2000s. It doesn't really need more updates, so I guess it won't have much of an effect until a future OS will be unable to run it.

'Tis a shame. I've been using it for god knows how long, and I will miss it when a new wave of operating systems renders it obsolete.
I've tried a few suggestions from this thread, and here's what I think; VLC has crashed on me twice, so I likely won't use it, and jetAudio... just makes me angry. It's that feeling of "I know what I want to do, now why won't it let me do it" that makes it hard to stomach. As well as the installers trying to install nine random god damn programs, that just pisses me off.

I'm a bit down about it. While it's been bogged down with pointless shit as of late, it's extremely easy to just not install the extras.

Aside, it's a fucking media player, how bloated can it get? It's not iTunes, trying to manage your MP3 player and music licenses, it's hotkey support, modern skin, (gotta look pretty) and ability to play ogg, and mp3 files has earned it a place on the corner of one of my monitors on just about every machine I care to use.

VLC's great for movies, but I never liked to use it for music.

I am still using the old Winamp 2.8: super-light-weight all needed options.

Ah well... it's not that it will vanish for me now...
Do you still have the installer? What OS are you currently using? If you can find a method to send it to me, I can host it to the public on my DB.

Man I remember using Winamp ages ago, back when I was in middle/highschool. It was the only thing I used to play my music files.

I remember I loved downloading new skins and stuff for it... Good times. I haven't used winamp in about a decade though, so I'm probably not going to miss it.

I honestly still use winamp. It has a very convenient MP3 exporter in it that can turn MP3's above 44.1khz to 44.1khz sample rate so my CDJs can read them. Rest in peace, I still refuse to install itunes.

It's kind of a shame to see Winamp go, not because it was a great media player, but because it could have been a great media player. It was awesome back in the day when it was basically Winamp or Windows Media Player; and if that was still the case I'd still be browsing skins in my downtime. That said, though, this is just a classic case of someone releasing something great, then not keeping-up with the times. There's just too many other media players out there that do everything Winamp does, but better.

Sorry to see it go, but at the same time, in my eyes, Winamp died years ago. So I'm lone-since done mourning for it. This article is basically like flipping through an ancient newspaper and happening upon an obituary for an old relative. It brought-about a slight moment of reflection, but I've long-since made peace with it.

Weird, back when I used to use winamp I had such a limited selection of music that I actually associate some songs with it.

Winamp, your funeral music is White Reflection from Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz.

Now I feel bad for never giving Winamp a proper chance. I always settled on oddball players like the old Creative Player or MediaMonkey (my MP choice for the last six years). Fuck iTunes, though -- if anything needs to be retired it's that piece of shit.

Sad day indeed. I've been using winamp for the past 5 years. The docked toolbar is just so good, plus the customization and the fact its the only media player I could find at the time that would play FLAC files.

I guess I could try to figure out that foobar2000 player everyone is talking about.....or I could try to never lose my winamp installer.

It appears that I'm the only person who never used Winamp.

Huh.

After years of tolerating Windows Media Player, I switched to MusicBee.
