Well, of course they will be patches and service packs, but... hey... let them have their day in the sun.

Well, from the looks of the article they have finished the software months ahead of its consumer distribution so that Office Equipment Manufacturers can have it pre-installed around the same time.
ummm OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer

as for the topic on hand, it's been speculated for a while they had compiled the RTM version of Windows 7. it's been compiled and done for a couple weeks now judging by the build number of it. i'm still not sure if i will order the euro version so i can get it without internet explorer

I hear this one runs really, really well; much improved from Vista. (thank god)

I'll still be using Ubuntu, but I may give this a shot.

Hmmm you can get it for £79:99 if you preorder from play.com, but I'm not sure if its worth it, I've had no trouble with Vista and don't see much point in upgrading to get a slightly better interface and slightly better performance. (Well going from what I've heard from reviews anyway).
How much will it cost once released?

Some Pcs that are shipped with Vista have a Windows 7 license shipped with them, for a cost.

And from my experience working at an IT company when Vista was first shipped and from buying XP before the first service pack came out WAIT FOR THE FIRST SERVICE PACK before buying Win 7, it would be nice to think that Microsoft have changed but I'll remain sceptical.

On the plus side all the reviews seem to like it and I've had it as an alt-boot on one of my machines to test it and it seems to be fine. No major compatability issues like Vista had (the only thing I could get to work on Vista when it was new was firefox and an HP printer driver) which is great.

I can get Windows 7 for free from my university, so I'll be upgrading my laptop from Vista asap.

Well, I had the beta on my desktop...and I couldn't do anything with it. I tried running my one of the MMO's I played, but it wouldn't work...they've got some compatibility issues that I think they need to work out before they release it. Oh, and if you buy a laptop or desktop through Dell, they give you a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out...

I hope this turns out well, but Mircosoft have not impressed me with an OS since XP.

Ah... you caught me out on my knowledge of PC Acronyms - hardly surprising as I own a Mac Mini.

Windows 7 supports animated wallpapers:

This comes as part of the optional Windows Ultimate Extras - which you have to download...

Yours for $320.00 boxed.

Oh, and the cost of the hardware you will undoubtably need to run it all on.

I like Vista because after it killed my last laptop computer, I went out and bought a Mac! I've had little trouble with my Macbook Pro

Somehow I feel reluctant to spend money on something that is essentially a performance improvement patch with some useful extra content and an assload of gimmicks I'll never use.

The way I see it Windows 7 is the finished product and Vista its beta version.

Oh well, I'll probably get it anyway and eventually we'll all need to upgrade. Inevitability.

I have nothing but good things to say about Windows 7, I ran the Beta, and I am now running the RC as my primary OS. It really is an excellent OS, and I recommend it to anyone running XP or Vista.
