It depends, I currently have both installed on separate partitions and never pick the "XP" option at startup, but that's because I have a DirectX 11 graphics card. If you're graphics card is DirectX 9, going from XP to 7 doesn't give you many bonuses as if you have a DirectX 10 or 11 card. Also, if you're not a gamer or you have less than 2GB of RAM then just don't bother with 7 or Vista. Any self respecting PC gamer is running Windows 7 with a DirectX 10 or 11 card, that's just how it is.

Vista is atrocious, especially if you want to run games. Xp is really solid but at this point it's age is catching up with it. 7 is by far the better operating system because it combines the functionality and dependability of Xp with the good looks and easy program compatibility that Vista was trying to have.

My first laptop and self built PC have XP which is alright. My second laptop and self built PC had Vista which was a pain in the ass. Now they have 7 Ultimate (changed when I upgraded to an i5 processor in my PC) and it is excellent.

There are those in my Computer Science courses that despise Windows 7 from a coding standpoint... but for the average person I think that's moot.

I use XP only because my DAW is more stable with it. These are obvious drivers issues and as soon as I hear they are solved, I wont be looking back.

In all honesty, when I upgraded from vista to 7, I absolutely hated 7. It pissed me off at every turn (and still is). I try to transfer files to another folder "I R SORRY, U NEEZ ADMIN PREMISON LUL" even though, my account is the only account on the computer and therefore, by default, the admin account. While, I don't think Vista was better, I prefer it over 7. :\

What is wrong with vista anyways? Lots of people seem to hate it for a reason that was unexplained to me. It always did what I asked it, and I liked it for that (unlike fucking 7) *kicks computer*
I tended to find the opposite. Vista continually gave me those messages before I managed to find how to turn it off, and I have yet to have even one such problem with seven, and I haven't chaned any settings.
Vista was terrible as a gaming OS due to the reiculous amount of memory it used. 1 Gb of memory for a game on XP? You'll need 2Gb on Vista!
For the user who liked editting all of Window's options to optimise it for their needs, Vista was quite annoying when it came out due to the 'OMG they changed things', only I feel that this was an alright statement to make. Almost every menu had been moved, changed or replaced and it took some time and effort before I, and many others I knew, were able to get most of our customization back, and we still haven't managed to get it all back.

XP is my favourite, but like stated here, it is old, outdated and dying. Windows 7 is better in most aspects and I tend to use 7 instead. XP won't be compatible with new softway for much longer anyway so... 7 is the way to go.

My laptop uses 7, and I'm extremely happy with it. The family desktop uses Vista, but the memory issues aren't really a problem because our computer is ridiculously good anyway, and for what we use it for it really hasn't given us many problems. And my desktop, which is basically unusably slow, runs XP.

Obviously out of all of those I prefer 7. I'm really a fan of the streamlined taskbar, among other things.
