The Witcher 1 is a self contained story with a sequel hook, the only thing you are missing is the knowing of the returning characters, which isn't crucial.

Basically, there is very very little that truly caries over from the witcher 1 to the witcher 2, some of the characters yeah but plot details not so much. That isn't to say that there is no connection. Understand this, you can play the witcher 2 in it's entirety and not feel like you've missed a bunch of stuff because you didn't play the first game. As for the "here's the witcher 1's story" video, yeah.. as someone who played both games multiple times, the video doesn't do the greatest job of explaining. (to give it credit, i would do a horrible job explaining the events of the first game in the same time frame as the video). Also note, there is a really good wiki out there that covers the games, the tv series and the books pretty well and does a good job of mentioning when there might be spoilers, so i'd give that a look as well.

as for what is a witcher (there is another video answering that specific question) they are people who have been genetically altered at a fairly young age, go through extensive trials and training, as well as a few rituals. In exchange they have incredible reflexes, can see better in the dark, can withstand toxins much better than a normal person, and can master some amount of magic (though nothing to the scope of a mage / sorcerer or sorceress). they are also infertile. also some who go through the trials to become a witcher are altered in different (Geralt's hair for example was turned white in the process, and hence is sometimes known as the White Wolf) All of this makes them far from immortal however, they still get hurt, can take a beating, will bleed if you cut them, and die if you stab them with a pitchfork.. (or anything else for that matter)

if you still have other questions as far as plot from the first one or what actually might carry over, PM me and I'll answer

I played The Witcher one without first reading the books. I don't see why starting The Witcher 2 without playing the first would be much different. It's a fun game, and the writing is excellent. You'll pick up all of the loose bits, don't worry about that. ;)

Because when I saw that The Witcher 2 is coming out on the 360, I threw my money at the computer screen hoping that it would make it happen faster.

It sucks that I didn't get to play the original but I'm guessing that they have some kind of a solution to this (either a "Previously on..." kind of thing or maybe it just didn't matter and The Witcher 2 can just stand on it's own story-wise).
The Witcher 2 is completely stand alone. There's an occasional reference to something that happened in a previous game, like a character saying "Remember when we X" or the like, but that's about it. Here's a quick recap so that you know everything you need to know to understand everything in Witcher 2:

There's all of 2 primary characters that carry over: Geralt, the main character, and Triss, his squeeze. And at the end of Witcher 1, Geralt saved the life of the king he's serving at the opening of Witcher 2.

Now you're all caught up and ready to go.

I think the challenge is going to be in playing the game on the 360 period. I didn't play TW2 on PC, but I did play the original... For about 20 minutes. There wasn't any combat tutorial, but I managed to figure out this much:

Click... Double-click... Double-click... Double-click... X, Click... Double-click... Double-click.

I really couldn't get into it. The ads I'm seeing for TW2 make me really interested in it, but I really hope they've updated the combat system since the first game.

Honeslty graphics aside the game was practically made for consoles the whole time. There are tons of problems on the PC right now from lack of FOV to no hardware mouse support to consolized UI to way more than I could count. On the witcher forums there are quite a few posts about if CDPR is going to fix the problems and none of them have been addressed. The game has been out for a year and none of these major problems have been addressed. Honestly seeing the ad of them saying they used fan input the most to make the 360 version was almost insulting. Not insulting in they were making it for consoles but that they have been ignoring their fanbase for a whole year not saying anything then claiming to use their input to make it. Still the game was basically completely seperate from the first game save a handful of characters coming back so if you want to get it but don't know the first game's plot don't worry to much. Especially since the carry over function with saves from TW1 to TW2 does virtually nothing with a lot of major events just being ignored.

Well I got the the Witcher 2 today in the post and I'm not really having any trouble getting to grips with the story.

It's a great game, looks damn good too.
PC? The enhanced edition can be preloaded, a stonking titanic 10gigs.

And i do agree, i just got it 2 days ago, and so far its simple to follow. I love how the journal entries are all from another perspective. Ubersampling makes my setup get down on its knees and beg.

Sorry i just had to talk to someone about it...
Christ, ubersampling. Ran everything at a pretty constant 50-60fps on PC. I see ubersampling in the options and get curious and my fps dropped to about 5.

They've changed the combat system. The whole "fast, strong, group" style switching and timed clicks are gone. Now it's more of a fast attacks and strong attacks with parrying and the like. No more auto attacks! Good stuff. :)

So it has combat that actually flows? That sounds refreshing. The only game with satisfying melee combat lately has been War in the North.

Man, it's a lot of fun to have WoW-style party combat that actually requires skill and reflexes rather than grinding and waiting. Why can't we have nice things anymore?

Because nice things like that require monthly payments. No thanks! :p

Oh, and yup. Combat flows quite well if you've got the skill for it. It can be quite challenging. In a good way, though.

Oh, and a tad more on topic: My PC can't handle The Witcher 2. It can barely handle the first on it's lowest settings. So this 360 port is just what I need! I like controllers for this sort of combat system, anyway. Win-win, I say.

I have to play most of my PC games on low anyway. Graphics have never been a huge deal for me. If I can tell who's who I'm good.

From what everything is saying it seems you didn't need to have played the first. If you really want to know the universe of the game though I think TW1 is on steam for like $10. You can also read the books (cause unless I'm mistaken the games are based on books by some polish guy). I read one of them that featured the protagonist of the games, so I think they're related. As far as fantasy goes the one I read was okay.

So Witcher 2 is coming out on 360 (and maybe ps3?) I'm told its a in depth dark fantasy Rpg. Great ok that should be fun, but as with all in depth fantasy rpg's you should play the prequel to understand it right? they apparently are not releasing the first game on consoles, so why did they bother releasing the second on consoles? People will just be confused.
I have seen a trailer thing which was supposed to bring me up to speed but I finished watching and just thought, "ok I have a general idea, but I still dont quite know whats going on in most areas". Maybe I am just a bit slow on the uptake, but I didn't feel it explained enough. Like wtf are witchers?
Just seems stupid to me, thoughts anyone?
Saints Row, Mass Effect, etc. seemed to do okay. I know ME2 had sort of a primer, but still.

It's a game based of a book that was originally Polish. Witchers are boss as monster hunter people that were taken from their parents from Witchers, because their parents needed the Witchers help to own some monster and couldn't pay, and the babies are fed secret herbs and spices, go through all sorts of tests and stuff, and become badasses.
It may be difficult to understand. The books are really good though, they have translated copies all around the place.

I agree 100%! You should always read the entries, especially when they include the writer (Dandelion). They are hilarious at times.

I think they believe it will sell, and I have a feeling they're right, besides, if half of the amount of people who bought it on PC buy it on 360, it'll be worth it.
