so the steam sale has witcher 2 listed at $7. But torchlight 2 is only $10. Max Payne 3 is $15 on amazon!! I paid $5 for the first game and never got far because I was already spoiled by games like Dragon Age Origins. How does this game stack up story and combat-wise to the first? I am only getting one of these 3 games.

The gameplay is completely different between Witcher 1 and 2, so if that was the reason you couldn't play through the first Witcher it's not really an issue here. The two aren't really comparable, entirely different game engine and mechanics in regards to gameplay.

As for whether you'll like it... I don't know. That's entirely subjective. Plays more similar to a fast paced Arkham Asylum than Witcher 1 however for what little those comparisons are worth. Watch some gameplay, decide for yourself.

Story-wise what do you want to know? I thought it was great, but I also thought the story in Witcher 1 was excellent as well, even if it did have some pacing issues and other problems. The Witcher series has always been about choice and consequence in a morally ambiguous world. It regularly faces you with decisions and adjusts accordingly based on what you went with. That hasn't changed between either game, though if you didn't get far enough in the first game it's unlikely to reached the point where everything you've done starts coming back to hit you.

For what it's worth, I ended up putting Witcher 1 down halfway through. It was a chore to play, it had an oddly juvenile approach to sex, and the voice acting/writing was teetering on the edge between serviceable and atrocious.

Witcher 2 is better in every respect. The writing is brilliant, the voice acting is brilliant, it's less of a chore to play, and it feels more mature (and darker in tone). It is the game I THOUGHT I was going to get with the original Dragon Age, but got a vaguely silly "stop the demonic army" stock fantasy tale instead. I think it's one of the best RPGs of the last 10 years.

Wither 2 i enjoyed very much, and i usually don't enjoy fantasy stories ^_^ But dragon age bored me, so there you go. The combat is fun and the story is well paced for the most part. The game is worth at least two playthroughs because the story splits onto two completely different paths. The only thing i didnt like was the finicky stealth missions (which there are only a few of and are short so good times). Also sometimes the quests could be a little confusing to complete (particulary some of the monster hunting ones).

Max payne 3 is a great shooter, like playing through an action movie in which you play the fight scenes :) But the withcer 2 will give you more playtime if you enjoy it.

I found the Wither to be a chore to play to the extent that I stopped well before the end. By contrast, I completed the second game thanks to dramatically improved mechanics and improved mission and world design. The story is excellent enough to play on that merit alone. The game does still have problems including an incredibly odd difficulty curve such that the opening hours of the game are harder by orders of magnitude than the closing hours and the somewhat regular use of incredibly irritating stealth segments but on the balance these are relatively minor concerns.

I played it for maybe... and hour and a half so far. It's a fucking lot better than that piece of shit The Witcher(1).
Just be prepared for some really bad voice acting and "LOOK AT ME I'M SO DARK SHUCK FINT CRUNT" dialogue.

Watch some game play videos. The Witcher 2 plays nothing like the first and IMO is better in most ways. It has some similarities with DA:O I guess, trying for grey choices and downtrodden elves for instance but they don?t feel all that similar to me.
It?s certainly not a perfect game, the combat could still use some work, the difficulty curve is fucked and while the story and writing in general is good it is hilarious bad in a few places(the Iorveth vs Roche fight for example is just stupid and shouldn't even possible if you made certain choices and then there is the shit with Cynthia that was introduce in the enhance edition, presumably because they wanted to throw in some more boobs)and at one point I was about ready to throw the game out the window if I heard the word whore, whoreson or a dick reference one more time but its defiantly worth it for that price.

Personally I couldn't get through the Witcher 2. The gameplay, while better than the first, is still pretty atrocious. If you enjoy Bethesda-style boring RPGs with lots of exploration and options, it's a good game. I personally hate those kinds of RPGs.

The sequel is a significant improvement over the first game, although that's not saying much.

You can't go far wrong at $7.00.

Are you sure you were playing The Witcher 2? I ask because, well... it's not at all like a Bethesda style open world rpg. Quite the opposite in fact. It's got a linear story which ferries you from setting to setting as you advance, no exploration required. It's more like Mass Effect than anything Bethesda has ever put together and even then Mass Effect has hubs you can return to and an element of exploring the galaxy, Witcher does not.

....you sure you have the right game? The Witcher 2 is story not exploration based and is fairly linear. You don?t really have a large amount of options compared to most rpgs either. It is almost a complete opposite to a Bethesda rpg.

Yeah, absolutely worth it. In terms of quality, it's something like this:
Witcher 2 > Dragon Age: Origins > a pile of shit > the ending of KOTOR 2 > Witcher 1

The story is much better, the pacing is infinitely better (partly because pacing didn't exist in Witcher 1), and the combat improved to the level of being pretty good.

I actually like the first Witcher but just couldn't bring myself to finish it. Same with part 2 although with part 2 I think I will probably go back as I just had my attention pulled away by other games. Stun bombs are easy to make and are your friend, at least early on as I didn't get too far.

I used to underestimate and scoff at it's usefullness but roll dodge for the win. Look how utterly baffled and unable to counter his opponent is.

Witcher 2 dialogue is weird. The use of older words as if they want to go with a more authentic feeling of those times. Yet at the same time the use of modern words that weren't invented yet back then. Plus they seem to want to go with the whole 'look at me I'm so grown up and dark' a little too much.

Otherwise the game is fantastic. Best looking game of that year, imo. And so many improvements over the witcher 1. Definitely worth 7 dollars. Heck, it would still be worth the full 60 dollars today, imo.

It's completely different, I can't play through the first but I've played the second through at least twice. You should feel bad that you're able to get such excellence for a mere £4 or so.

Eh, am I really the only one here who absolutely loved The Witcher 1?
(I am aware the answer is always no)

It's the complete opposite of a Bethesda RPG - it's 100% story driven.
