I haven't seen a Woolworth's in over twenty years; they died out here in Canada in the mid-80s... so no, no buying spree for me. I do feel a bit of nostalgia, though, at the thought that they may be dying altogether.

Woolworth's has been toast in Reno for decades, but the abandoned Woolworth's building on First Street hasn't found a new owner/tenant in twenty years. Last year they hired a local artist to paint a truly ugly and awful mural (an ironic comment on Reno's civic misery, about the worst possible representation of the city, right in the middle of the tourist walk part of town) on the building's walls. It makes me want to see that building demolished and turned into a parking lot.

First off, please never type like that again. Every word capitalised. Please, no. Also, you sound like you are a teenager and act like one so why should you not be treated like one? Woolworth's is an institution, it's pretty childish to celebrate its demise because they wouldn't sell you a game that you legally shouldn't be sold.

I just looked up more. Apparently it started as an American chain, but the American Woolworth's chain has since died off and changed focus, becoming Foot Locker.

In any case, we never had any around our area when it was still Woolworth's. Though, we have a Foot Locker in the mall.

I hoped that is meant to be drenched in sarcasm. Wollies is still kicking here in Australia, is the fall of the British one going to affect us? I don't go there but just wondering because without them competition would be non-existent.

Its a very old British highstreet retailer. Sadly it is completely bankrupt & in like £350mill debt with no1 wanting to buy it so its gone into administration & chances are will have the best parts of its carcass snapped up by competitors & the rest discarded & dumped.
Do they clothes or games? Over here in the States there's a company (or was, not sure if they closed completely) called Woolworth's that sells/sold the best over-shirts.

Coles > Woolworths/Safeway/Purity
Does depend what your local store is like, but Coles is Australian owned.

[disclaimer: This thread I believe is referring to the British Wollworths retail chain. There are several others in the world that this doesnt apply to. Read http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7751064.stm]

I kinda hope Woolworths doesnt dissapear; I like the familiarity of there having been one within walking distance wherever I live. That said; first sign of firesales & im in there grapping as much choclate as I can.

Wow, your Woolies are completely different to the chain at the bottom of Africa. Ours are mainly clothes stores with a sub-branch of food stores and they're pretty fancy too.

Have a look if you don't believe me:

Or just never post again.

If Dixons go, Currys will too. I think they're basically the same store.

Australian WoolWorths are horrible, no games, nothing. Just groceries.
Yes, completely useless [/sarcasm]
Woolies is where we do most of our grocery shopping, I will be very upset if the Aussie branch goes belly-up too.
