Wizards are, in all common knowledge, the most bad arse humans to grace this planet. They fight dragons, create weird dimensions and creatures (insert: Owlbear) and do whatever the hell they want, whenever the hell they want to do it!
I know I had one of these threads before about Unicorns, but my mind likes to wander a bit around mythalogical creatures sometimes. I don't know, next month it could be Mind Flayers.

Anyway, I would believe the greatest wizards would be:
Elminster from DnD. I'm not sure who he really is, but in games they keep making cameo's with him. But to me, he's basically Galdalf the red.

Of course, Marvel gets in with Dr Strange. He fought with a deamon, and has all the powers a man could need under that flashy red cape.

Then we have Gandalf. He rides on the kind of the horses and gets around on a giant eagal.

So have at thee; we all know Wizards would be great to have as a friend. A best bud who can do all your homework with a floating pen and/or make a chilled Coke bottle appear by bending the laws of space to his/her slightest whim.

I think that Mr. Orpheus needs a comment or two about making the most awkwardly awesome speeches.

Elminster the Sage is the most powerful wizard of all time, the Chosen of Mystra, the goddess of Magic and the Weave in Faerun. So yes, he is more powerful than Gandalf the Red. Although I still prefer Phaerun Mizzyrm, for his smarmyness and wit.

Then there's always Rincewind.

I see your Elminster, and I raise you a Raistlin Majere.

(No love for good old Khelben Blackstaff?) ;-)

Rincewind is great haha I didn't even think of him.

Also, I think Richard Rahl is pretty badass even though some of the books were a little too deus ex machina... YES PILLARS OF CREATION I AM LOOKING AT YOU!

If they're really all such great wizards, though... Where are their monocles?!

*Snicker*

Just kidding.

Ah, lovin' the Venture Bros. references :D...

Anyway, I submit Lady Melisandre of Asshai [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melisandre#Melisandre] from A Song of Ice and Fire. She literally can give birth to invincible shadow doppelgangers of people!

Hey hey hey! How about Harry Potter?

Kidding. But it would've eventually been mentioned anyway.

Scarlet Witch from Marvel? Well technically not a real magician, but hey, she decimated the mutant population down to a measly 198. That's an achievement all by itself.

But if you're talking real wizards, I'll pick Ixidor from Magic the Gathering. Now I know, I know, sub-par game tie-in stories, and I'm hardly impressed by them either. But hey, he started out as a meager illusionist who tag-teamed with his girlfriend who had the power to make his illusions corporeal. When she got murdered, his power somehow evolved into 'reality sculpting'. Basically all of his 'illusions' became real instead of just physically powered illusions, essentially making him a God.

Oh, and let's not forget Diablo II's Sorceress! Glacial Spike spamming FTW!

i'm waiting for someone to say "you missed John Constantine"

tho you did miss Merlin, Dr Fate (the DC version of Dr Strange) and Fizban, tho both him and Gandalf really should be excluded since Fizban is a God and Gandalf is a demi-god

tho i still say the best one is Dr Doom, simply because he always talks in the third person

You can say ass on the escapist but whatever.

Back on topic. Yes wizards are awesome. But then again its easy to make something seem awesome, but hard to actually do it. Wizards/Mages/Spellcasters are actually a pretty stable bunch in terms of awesomeness because you can design one to do anything. A wizard that has control over zombie spider monkeys, not the best idea but certainly an example of the "do anything" part.
