Fixed.
Remember the time some kid's mother got mad at Microsoft after her kid spent £1082 on Xbox Live?
Yup! Same thing. Mother, sues company, can't be a good parent, etc.

Let me get this straight? The woman gives her kid money, to go play these games to get tickets (usually just to get the kid out of her hair), and now she wants to sue Chuck E. Cheeses' just because it's "gambling". Well, first off, if it is found to be "illegal gambling", then she should be fined and tried for participating in it. And, she shouldn't get a cent of the money. It's like, "duh!"

One question. It's topic related, so don't worry...

Can we sue parents for promoting childhood stupidity?

The saddest thing, is that all of these ticket machines are usually sought after and demanded by most parents for their kids.
A brand new arcade opened up in my area a few months ago that has around 300 machines ranging from sit down racers, to fighting games, to a ton of pinball. Out of all of those machines, the skeeball and Deal or No Deal were the only machines that had tickets. When I checked the place out last night, they had added about 8-10 new machines, all of which were spat out tickets. I'm guessing that they had too many parents complain that there wasn't enough for their children to play. These days "arcade" to a parent means "Place to take your kids to distract them with tickets and buy a couple pieces of candy afterward".

Man, I remember when you had to be over 16 or accompanied by a parent in order to go into an arcade.

Why is it that when people sue, they sue for a ridiculous amount of money? then claim it's not about the money... Why are you doing it then?! i can see where she is coming from but i don't really agree, but its the thing where she is asking for millions... if she was really doing it to 'protect' the children then she should file a lawsuit or something not sue them.

I don't think she should be suing for money in this case.

That's it.

I also happen to think that she's right.

Blackjack isn't purely a game of chance. It has heavy elements of luck involved, but the difference between a skilled player and a novice player is the difference between a player who busts and a player who manages to sit just under 21.

It's even more substantial in Poker: It's not just about the cards you're dealt, but the psychology you employ against your opponents, and the psychology they employ against you.

Both are still gambling.

So the claim that this is rubbish because they aren't pure chance is fallacious.

it's not gambling when you get tickets or prizes.
Yes it is.

Real-estate not doing so well, eh Keller.
Wow, I think she ate the whole bowl of crazy.
I feel sorry for her kids.
And what does she take them to Chuck-E every night, I think I have been 3 times in my entire life.
What a wackjob.
I love how you've taken completely irrelevant facts about the case and made hyperbolic and unsubstantiated claims about her lifestyle to support your thesis. Well done sir/Madam.

This is what I don't get, if the money isn't the issue why sue for 5 million?
I'm going to propose that suing a company and then winning that suit tends to have more immediate consequences than a deliberation spanning a great deal of time that wants to take a serious look at whether the machines found in children's entertainment centers are promoting Gambling. I wouldn't know whether the woman/lawyer were thinking this or not, it's just a proposition. But I can't help but think that her winning the suit would cause many other places similar to CeCs to change their own policies.

It's not the same thing. It's deplorable that she's trying to seek damages from the case, but that's it. Microsoft had a reasonably secure system of transactions that was neglected by the user. CeCs has what clearly here has been interpreted as questionable activities ingrained in its very core.

$5 million...LOL

She should be so lucky to get a refund of the money she spent that night.

Plus how many tokens can your kid have if you're the one buying them the tokens <.<

they should agree to pay her the damages....in tickets

on a separate note i pretty much agree with the "she/her kid did nothing/had nothing happen to them to earn any money" crowd

i still have a small amount of tickets floating around....even though the only chucky cheese's closed down over 10 years ago, which was replaced with a local version...which closed down and stayed that way

How long before arcades in general are outlawed for this same cause? Carnival crane machines?
How about coconut styes?

Anything you have to pay for involving chance. So basically, that's Kinder Eggs out.

Almost makes me want to get active politically just to correct all the bullshit.
Except this is England, and we don't tend to care much.

are you a bad parent? do you have no idea what your child is doing when you're in the same room as him? do you find your horrible ineptitude has led to your child doing things that you do not approve of? we have a solution: SUE EVERYONE!

We're just getting to the point where lawyers are just looking for any reason to sue somebody. These games have been around for decades, and now they're suddenly gambling machines? Give me a break...

And $5 Million? In what planet does this lady deserve anything close to that amount for anything about this lawsuit? Did the kid break into the family trust and lose it all on skee-ball? This doesn't make any sense.

I think that anyone who loses a stupid lawsuit like this should have to stand in a city square and let 500 people slap them upside the head. After their head is ringing that hard, maybe they'll get the point that they shouldn't do stupid things like this.

Maybe.

While I think that it's not a good idea to introduce children to gambling at a young age, she's asking for five fucking million?

You don't sue someone on principle for five million USD. I think this woman's just cash-grabbing, but she does raise a good point.

....Where did the $5mil come from? Is this like a standard amount that lawyers go for when they go up against a company that makes over x amount per year?

:S

Yessir, can't let the children be exposed to gambling, and since I'm a good parent, I'll make the government do my parenting for me!!!!!

Meh. I see her point, gambling is addictive. And my parents used to worry a lot about my Friday night poker games. But in a controlled setting there is very little danger. Hell, its best that the kid recognize the highs and lows of gambling, how it can ruin you, and how it can be an enjoyable leisure activity. Seriously, there is no danger of her child becoming an addict if she just frickin keeps an eye on her kids. Besides, I'm philosophically against the government getting into matters best left to individuals.

And really? Chuck E. Cheese? 5 million?

I see at best a concerned but misguided parent whose lawyer told her that she (and he by extension) could make a quick buck. At worst I see a woman maliciously litigating to get a payout and using her child as an excuse.

"While Keller is asking for $5 million,"

For what?

What the fuck did she do to deserve that money? Correct me if I'm wrong but all she did was point out that the machines might be illegal. How the hell does that entitle someone to money?
This is what I was wondering.

How exactly has this harmed her or done damage? If you don't want to go there, then don't. What the hell is suing them going to do? I mean, I see her point and agree that some action should be taken to make sure the kids aren't worse off for it. But why the hell would she need to sue them?

She isn't wrong about the case... I think she's wrong about the amount of money. Why does she feel like she deserves $5 million for this?

Technically, she is right and I'd like to see if anyone can actually come up with a reason why she isn't. Sure, she's probably just greedy, but games like that are gambling [http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/gambling] and are also being directed at children. The stakes are just lower.

In the age of videogames, where many are luck based, or at least partially so, where are we to draw the line between gambling and good honest fun. If her motivation was that it simply taught them the habits, then she would have to go after all the videogames that had any form of gambling at all. Pokemon allows you to play slots. Neopets has tons of card/luck games that involve placing bets.

You'd be hard pressed to find a game that doesn't have something that could be interpreted by a stretch of the imagination as gambling.

So unless those machines at Chuck E. Cheese's start spitting out cold hard cash, instead of tickets redeemable for fingerpuppets and age old tootsie-rolls, she doesn't have much of a case (if the courts have any sense at all)
