i'm a big fan of stand up comedy, and it is quite widely believed that women aren't as funny as men in stand up (by myself included).
i don't know why it is, does anyone else agree/disagree, or know why this might be. better just clarify that i'm not sexist.

could it be that their are not enough women in the comedy circuit to judge it by.

no flaming.

Yeah I have to agree here. There are very few female stand up comedians.

Tina Fey is one of my favourite comedians. I have to admit though generally I think the comedic market tends to be more male dominated.

EDIT: Just read your avatar's meaning...All I can say is it all makes so much sense now.

Maybe it's just because us men laugh at manly humour but I find that the majority of women comedians are terrible but there are a few female comedians that are exceptionally funny.

I don't know any funny women (in a comedic way). Some can tell good jokes and funny comments, but that's not comedy. Males are just funnier because of their voice, they are easier to make fun off e.t.c.
Not sexist!

There are female comedians who are funny, it's just that the comedy business (stand up comedy at least) is mainly dominated by men for some unexplained reason. Someone else can have a go at explaining that one.

Most female comedians aren't very funny from what i've seen. Especially Joan Rivers. I want that women to die.

I disagree, because there is so much difference between comedians all together.

I've only seen a few female stand ups.But they were just as crude and funny as the men.

Maria Bamford is one of my favorite comedians, but yes women comedians are less likely to be funny, they just do'nt all suck.

While I'm not stating that women can't be good stand-up comics, I find that the reason why they are looked seen as "generally" worse than male comics is due to their shoehorning of unnecessary relationship/feminist/women-are-better-than-men jokes. Granted, some of that material can be downright funny, but if it goes on too long, makes up the majority of the act, or is done in a completely righteous tone without perspective from the other side (i.e., stating why women are better than men but then giving an equally humorous comeback as for the reasons why men are better), then the act gets a little stale. This is partially the same reason why I don't like some black comics over white comics--due to the deep integration of black humor and the view of some black comics that whites are generally still repressing blacks.

Both from school and now work I know that men are quick to jokingly insult each other all the time. It never ends here at work, and I love it. I think that mentality helps develop a sharp wit that definitely lends itself to comedy. It is not something I ever remember seeing girls in school do and I don't know any women at work who are like that either.

Theory: Women are less-funny overall because it's not as important to men. When describing a perfect mate, women always say "He has to be really funny/make me laugh." Whereas when men describe a perfect woman, it's all about beauty/kindness/compassion and it only matters that she laugh at his jokes, not that she be funny.

This might also explain why most decent female comedians are also lesbians (or so deep in the closet they're finding Christmas presents).

to me there are two types of women comediennes, women who are normal comedians (comedian girls) like Sarah Silverman, or Maria Bamford, then there are The Comedians who are only funny if your a women like Chelsea Handler or someone (comedians for girls). It's the same with a lot of people there are black comedians who are mainly funny to black guys and Hispanic to Hispanic. It's all about whether or not you get the joke on their level as a woman, or as a black guy. Don't get me wrong If you don't like a woman comedian I'm not saying your dumb, they could totally suck. I'm just saying you can't walk into a womans joke about being a woman and get it on the same level as them.

but this is just my opinion as a white American boy
