for everyone bringing up the Twilight thing. I see two very attractive and funny actors who have had the life drained out of them by a terrible series. seriously, Kirsten Stewart is very pretty and Robert Pattinson is charismatic, but in those movies they are under such god-awful lighting, make up and bad directing that they just look like soulless zombies, maybe that was the point.
That and it's well-known that Robbie-boy hates the character and plays him as badly as he can and still get paid for it.

Nah, if that were true than I should have women beating down my door right now.

"That was one of the more surprising findings," said Tracy, a psychology professor at the University of British Columbia. "Then we replicated it in three more studies with a pretty big sample, so I'm convinced at this point it's a real finding."
It reeks of clueless journalist summarization, but there *could* be something going there.

It could be a cultural thing though. Which, they actually address at the end:

Tracy said the next step is to conduct the same studies with non-Western cultures and homosexual groups to determine whether what people find attractive in a mate is built into us biologically or taught to us socially.
I think "western" and "non-western" is a bit too broad a generalization, but again the details of the other 3 studies are entirely left out, so maybe they've already covered that.

Also the comments in this thread reek of fear inspired bias, lulz. Why so worried, Escapist? Afraid the generic "confidence" response isn't going to fly anymore?

This makes me wonder why Justin Bieber is so popular, he's usually smiling from what I see.
Women who don't ovulate tend to find more feminine males more attractive, while ones that do find more masculine males attractive. I can't find the place I read this at anymore, but it *does* explain why 16 year old girls and 45 year old women are so interested in him.

I feel that studies like this, while interesting, are just... stupid. They basically just took out the countless number of variables and complexity of attraction and narrowed it down to a few. Yeah, that's sort of the point when you are doing scientific research, but should scientific research really be the point here? What's this going to achieve? Sure, it's cool to know, people like to dissect things and find out how they tick, but I feel like with such a calculated, narrow, scientific method such as this, you aren't going to really get how it all works. This just has no relevance to my life.

No, its just that some women are genuinely attracted to men who aren't interested; "not smiling". You can't generalize people, anyway; studies like these are just moot.

I look a lot uglier when I'm not smiling. I've had a lot of girls tell me that I should smile more because it makes me look a lot better. So take that random survey.

Sorry, real studies have been done on that very subject, and they consistently find that smiling people are perceived as more attractive. Also friendlier. And smarter. More competent as well.

Also, in relation to the claims here that this is somehow about bud dudes versus nice guys, overconfident douche-bags are far more likely to be smiling in a setting that involves meeting lots of new people, particularly attractive ones. They're overconfident, you see, and so far less likely to be nervous. Contrary to popular belief, most women aren't actually attracted to those sorts of people, it's just that those sorts of people are so much better than you at making a good first impression that they have much better luck than they probably deserve.

That's an infuriating thing for me to hear said to me. 1) Judging me based on my appearance 2)Implying I would want to act happy just to look better 3)Females telling me every little thing thats wrong with me.

They would retort that its a harmless suggestion, but if that's the case, they don't have the mental capacity to see that its not, or they do and they be trollin'.

Just going to add. Did you see that guy's smile. He looks like a chipmunk.... a soulless creepy chipmunk. It's kinda scary.

I guess that makes sense. You hardly ever see models smiling on posters and stuff.
That is, you often get that naughty semi-smile, but we're talking about a proper smile of joy here.

Exactly...like is this a(n incredibly hard to pull off convincingly, for me at least) Genuine George Clooney Smile(tm), or a(n unsettlingly easy to pull off) pedosmile?
It might make a difference.

I smile all the time. Not a fake smile either. I'm honestly happy a majority of the time. I'm kind to others and respect them. It always seems to me that I can brighten up all the people around me.

Does this make me incredibly attractive? I don't know. I do know that people tend to be happy and willing to follow my requests and instructions. They always seem to be happy and motivated to help me out with stuff.

Call it leadership skills or charisma, I just call it just being me.

This is nonsense.

I'm going back in time to the 70s to marry this man (back left), solely because he has the greatest smile the world has ever seen.

Looks better in motion, though...

I question the validity of this study! I scowl like a dour fucker and the ladies never look my way. |:(
Scowl harder, you'll see.

OT: Huh. Well, if less than 1000 girls say so than I guess that goes for the entire gender.
