I do it, I do the 'upwards nod' along with the words "Alright?"

I'm a Manly Woman.
This, disregarding the women part...and the manly part. Usually this is my kind of half-awake colloquial greeting first thing in the morning, where you acknowledge each others presence but can't be arsed to initiate a proper conversation.

I do this ALL the time, I'm not to sure why.
I don't think it's a masculine thing.

More of my depressed, emo-kid, don't really give-a-**** kind of thing.

I either do the nod or just hold my hand up straight. [reads Susan's post] NOT a wave >_>; just like hold my right hand up for less than a second. In retrospect it's a little weird I suppose, like I'm too lazy to wave properly, but I've never gotten a confused response so......[shrugs]

OT: But yeah you're right. I've never seen a girl do the nod.

I tend to give different greetings to different people. In increasing order of acknowledgement these greetings are: a half-smile, a nod, a wave, a hug.

Women tend to wave. Has the exact same connotation, but is perceived as more feminine.
Aye, a wave, or a smile usually occur when I walk past someone I know walking in the other direction.
If I don't know them that well or they seem particularly involved in their own conversation, I might just raise my eyebrows momentarily in a friendly way.

I do the nod and am indeed male. Or at least i was the last time i checked. Half the shit i see on a daily basis has left me so jaded i wouldn't be surprised if the zombie outbreak started next week, let alone spontaneous gender change. Here...
...yep. Still male. My girlfriend doesn't do the nod. Not sure what the significance of the nod is, a vague acknowledgment of someones existence. Mind you my girlfriend doesn't even do a slight wave unless someone approaches her first, so maybe it's tied to the level of antisocialness you display. I'm very antisocial and nod slightly, if my girlfriend had her way people would've gone extinct decades ago and doesn't want to acknowledge other people, but in general men tend to be more antisocial than women, so maybe that's it. Who knows?

To guys i barely know, or not that good anyway, i give the nod. Otherwise its a brofist basicly.
Girls either get a smirk or a handshake, since i cant really give them a brofist without them going "ouch" because of it. Thin fingers..causing my knuckles to stand out more, hence ouchies :3

Well actually its skeletal Hands..long, thin cold fingers (cold due to smoking) XD

Yeah, I do it. Maybe you guys have noticed the up down code; up nod for people you are familiar with, down nod for strangers or people you don't know well (this nod is basically just to acknowledge their existence).

Sometimes I do the nod, the over-the-top overhead double hand signal wave where you flap your arms around like a moron, but I mainly do a little wave consisting of putting up my index and middle finger (pressed next to each other, no peace here) and just tilting them to the right...palm facing them of course. Never seen a girl do the nod, all they give me is a hey and the VERY occasional hug

Now that you mention it, the upwards nod is common here, but I've never seen a woman do it.
Women tend to keep eye contact slightly longer than what would be comfortable if she were a man.

"The nod" is universally known to guys. I think its just ingrained into our brains. Every time I pass another guy on the street, we give each other "the nod", however when I pass a woman, its always just a smile or something similar.

I believe upwards is something you're going to do if you know someone well, and downwards is more reserved for strangers and is just a sign of respect.

I am such a master of the nod I have even leveled up my ability and can now incorporate the low grunted "alright?" (which normally sounds more like "uruuh?") and a subtle eyebrow raise.

The ladies get a smile and a fully pronounced "Hi (insert name)" though (close friends and girls I am attracted to get a wink, or a tip of the hat if I'm wearing one).

Really? There's a down version of The Nod? I didn't know.

Now that I think of it, I can't say I've ever seen a girl do The Nod. I'll have to pay closer attention.

captcha: ionticho necessary. Why is iontichoing necessary? I don't like iontichoing...

I mainly think of the nod as 'sup or 'ight; only occasionally acknowledgment. Never done it to a girl or seen one do it.

Also, an UP version of the nod!? What blasphemy is this!? That isn't even a nod!
