I read a study somewhere that said that woman found men clean shaven to be more attractive, while men viewed other men with facial hair with more respect.
So the ultimate question is: Would you rather be attractive or respected?
I was about to mention a similar study I read about somewhere recently. It focused on women preferring clean-shaved faces and generally disliking beards a bit.
I'm a straight man, but from personal experiences I'd say shaved seems to work generally a lot better. My ex-gf liked a stubble every now and then, but generally I've had better success with ladies with a shaved face. It can almost be compared to a clean set of clothes. It shows you taking at least some care of your appearance.
For a man's beard to be attractive, it has to either be clean and well taken cared of or a cool stubble that completes a look and gives masculinity. For some people, a beard visually builds their character.
If thinking about characteristics of male sex symbols; almost everyone of them are without a beard. Then take Johnny Depp, for example. His beard goes to aforementioned category: it's clean, fits great and completes the whole bohemian look.
Respect certainly doesn't automatically come with a beard. These scenarios work the complete opposite way:
- A young man, barely being able to grow a beard, sports the few hairs he has
- Someone keeps a beard to hide his non-attractive facial characteristics (a pointy jaw, for example)
- Someone having a beard only so he wouldn't like a little boy
- A hobo/drunk/etc having a beard because he either has no means to get it shaved or he just doesn't care the tiniest bit of his appearance anyways.
- Just plain ridiculous looking beard.
On the other hand, that respect-side of the study does hold a truth. If there's someone who you do have respect for, then a beard might as well add to that (unless it looks ridiculous). Especially if the respect is due to wisdom, intellect and in some cases, power.
