After several months of intermittent searching up in the loft I have finally found my old Dungeons and Dragons rule books. Tonight I will begin to design a campaign for my friends to play.

Any suggestions for quests?

Set them up to think they're overthrowing a corrupt local lord (they'll do it because that's what adventurers do) only to find out that the guy was a kind and benevolent ruler and now they're on the run for assassinating him and murdering his personal guard while trying to clear their names by catching the guy who set them up.

Awesome idea! I'm certainly using that!

How old are these books you're talking about? If it's 3.X, I suggest Epic 6 [http://www.myth-weavers.com/wiki/index.php/Epic_6] because I love it. And you must try to please me. Also, it's awesome if you want a more balanced and interesting system.

Other than that, for a while now I've been thinking of running a campaign with the typical dungeon trekking but have an NPC accompany the players (might not even fight - could be rescued from there or they hired the PCs as escort). The said NPC would constantly blabber about the "cursed" dungeon and how strange things happen there. But would secretly be a rogue that filches their money and makes up the magic as an excuse. If the group manage to sniff out the rat, more power to them. Otherwise the rogue might turn into a recurring character who tries to subtly double-cross the group all the time. It would be amusing to see how far it can go. (By the way, it would be totally in character for that rogue to hire the players to assassinate the ruler)

Or, if you think you can pull it off, use the Head of Vecna in your campaign.

Yeah, they're third edition. And surprisingly enough, I was also going to put an NPC adventurer in with my group haha.

Well, I have a few - one that worked well with my recent Darwins world campaign was a heist on a caravan for supplies, from an anonymous client - the group went and done over the caravan, to find certain medical supplies that were intended for a little village suffering from a disease - they where then faced with the decision to either continue the job and receive a fairly large sum of money and doom the town, or escort the supplies on towards the town and receive thanks, the locals favour and a few supplies that the town could spare. ( They were ofcourse harassed by local wildlife on the way to the town and later on discovered they were being hunted down by a small group to bring them in to the anonymous client. ) This also provided an excellent way to push them in a certain direction. With a few tweaks this could be used within a D&D setting

Have everyone start with new characters, look up all the items with random magic effects you can find, and go through a pretty normal early campaign, but in an alternate plane where such artifacts are commonplace. Go for permanent effects.
Your friends' characters will all have great stories and character features that they earned in-game pretty quickly. And it would be awesome.
(Yes, I was kind of inspired by this. [http://www.goblinscomic.com/05182012/] it has a second page, btw)

Lock them in a dark dungeon where the darkness disintegrates them. Have them going around managing torches and lighting spells while fighting off monsters. Then, put a one-man, one-use only portal at the end, and have them fight over who gets to be the sole survivor.

Yes! OP, do this [http://forums.penny-arcade.com/discussion/93582/dd-tuckers-kobolds].

As a side note, where has that site gone? And why? Anybody has any idea?

Put them in the room of death.

"Hello adventurer. You walk into the room. That's when the floor starts to fight with the ceiling about who gets to eat you. While they fight you sneak along the wall, hoping to escape...only to find out the wall's already starting to digest you the moment you touch it. Adventurer, I hope you've enjoyed your stay in the Room of Death. Remember to fill out your comment card."[/I]
