Working out, do you go to a gym, or exercise at home, or not at all

I used to do Tae Kwon Do and Karate. Now I keep fit by playing DDR at my local arcade or setting up the Xbox Kinect. I tried going to the gym a couple of times, but I just can't stick with anything that isn't fun!

I love working out but I hate going to the gym, the effort of finding time to go, the cost and well yeah the people there. I do weights in my room and other stuff, but I've been pretty lazy this semester.

My dream is to have my own gym in my house once I actually have money. So I can wake up do 30min of cardio or something, shower and go to work and then do some weights when I come home.

I don't go to any gyms but I do exercise quite often, sometimes it's planned, sometimes it's not. I like activities that aren't just about the exercise, but just happen to involve it.

I like riding my bike long distances to different towns and stuff. For one particularly long trip (almost 40 miles one way) I brought clothes, water, food, toothbrush, ect. in a backpack with me and stayed a friend's college dorm. I really enjoyed it and plan on doing it more often. I also go for runs somewhat often and plan to start swimming at least 2 days a week soon. I used to be very overweight, but over the last 2 years or so I've started exercising and eating healthier and have lost tons of weight.

What is a gym, also what is exercise? Will these things help me lose weight and be more attractive? Where does one find a workout regiment for a chubby guy with no muscle except in his legs?

I walk 6Km in one hour almost every day.
400 calories per day, do the math.
I would do the math, but I would need to know your calorie intake and bmr as well. Also i'll need to know what you eat to understand the nutritional value of the calories you do eat.

The gym is one of the most fun places on Earth! The people there make funny grunting/moaning noises and they all stare at themselves any time they come across a mirror and let me tell you, there are a lot of mirrors in a gym.

Walking on a treadmill though, I agree it sucks, I only do 5 minutes to warm up for the real fun.

By the way karate, tae kwon do, jiu-jitsu, ect is probably some of the best full body cardio workouts to ever exist.

Perfect mindset, have goals but realize it's not about where they are at but where you are at. Good mindset to have.

ok here is my question, do you work out ie.exercise if so do you go to a gym or just do things like push ups and jogging

i for one don't like going to the gym to work out mostly because i would be a beginner there and i CANNOT stand the feeling of anybody looking down on me(not viewing me as an equal)
and partially because i would prefer muscle being built off of function instead of the other way around so i keep to doing push ups sit ups crunches all that at home as well as doing basic jobs without machine assistance like chopping wood and walking instead of driving

any tips or advice are welcome
First off if your goal is to get big and strong you're probably going to want to go to a gym at some point and from what you said you'll need to deal with your insecurity and feelings of inadequacy first.

I didn't get where I was the first time I went to the gym. I've lifted and trained for years. Every person at the gym was small and weak at one point and all of them remember it. There isn't one person who I lift with who has anything but respect for anyone, no matter what stage of thier fitness they are in, who goes and works hard to better themselves.

There are some douchebags who do look down on beginners but they are a minority. In fact most people at the gym don't really give a shit one way or the other they're just doing their own thing.

Another thing to point out, you aren't equal to a guy who has busted his ass for years. You're looking at that as a negative but in reality you should be humble and be willing to take advice. I've trained for years but I still get advice from old gym rats and guys who know their shit and I take it to heart and I acknowledge that they have more experience and insight than I do. Just a couple months ago Bob, the 49 year old guy whose goal is to get to 500 lb squats by his 50th birthday gave me some pointers on how to increase the weight I do on my squats. Just a couple minor changes and I found myself doing 20 pounds more than I thought I could.

The reason lifting weights is superior for gaining mass is that it is easy to measure your improvements and continually increase and decrease your work load in order to see maximum gains. Gaining muscle from chopping wood and walking is great so long as you understand that you will not see results as fast and you will have a much harder time visualizing the moment you've begun to reach a plateau and need to take measures to address that.

There are many ways to get fit and look great but if what you want is to pack on 20 pounds of muscle without the fat lifting weights really is the superior choice. I only say that because from what I read you made it seem that muscle mass was your goal. Sorry If I was mistaken.

If you don't like going to the gym, it's certainly not absolutely necessary in order to get some exercise/build muscle. I've been on a routine for the past 2 and a half months which consists of cardio everyday (running in the park down the road, then boxing on the heavy bag the next day, and so on) and weights (all I have is free weights - two dumbells) every other afternoon. In that time I've gone from a 35 inch waist to 30.5 and reduced my body fat from around 26% to 13%, so I must be doing SOMETHING right. Oh, and diet. Diet is extremely important.

I know one awesome, cheap, but not easy full body workout. Dig a hole & then fill it back up. Wash, rinse & repeat.

When I was working out.....lord I need to get back to doing it....It was at home. I didn't really need any of the fancy stuff that a gym provides. I dropped about 40 pounds before holidays, medical conditions, and a lack of desire killed my routine. 25 of those pounds have found their way back on to me. Now that the temps have dropped some I'm highly tempted to start up again. I just need to wait for the pain in my left foot to stop before attempting anything. Stupid gout.
