You think people have no lives because they DON'T play WOW? Congratulations my impressive vocabulary has been rendered useless to this...idiocy.

Well.. you kinda answered your question. A good majority of people who play WoW.. play it for roughly 30+ a week so it really cuts in their social lives. I recently stopped playing WoW because of the community.. a bunch of yous.

Ah yes and even though we here at the Escapist believe in no internet slang you still insist on saying "teh". MMORPGS are known to be addictive and 'life-draining'. My closest friend became addicted to WoW and hardly ever leaves his room nowadays.

People don't really bash WoW or MMO's in general.
One South Park Homage and traditional non-gamer attitudes do not bashing make.
Maybe you can show me evidence of this, link to all the WoW bashing threads that I've apparently missed here at the Escapist for instance.

And that's all that matters. What does it matter what other people think about your habit?

Although saying things like, "I figure its because "people have no lives" or some stupid sh*t like that", isn't exactly helping your cause any. It's their right to have an opinion, too, whether you think it's "stupid shit" or not.

Personally, I don't play WoW, because I just don't derive any fun from it. The community seems horrible, too many little kids, I hate grinding, there's nothing to do in the end game, not enough customization, the lore doesn't interest me, and I despise the idea of paying for something every month as it just gives developers too much incentive to run with the "Carrot-on-a-Stick" method.

Also, if I played WoW or some other derivative, I wouldn't be playing all of the other amazing video games I've been playing, since all of my game time would be spent with an MMO. Variety is the spice of life, for me.

WoW is extremly social really though, your communicating and spending time with other people, sure it's over the internet, but your still doing it.

You know... i personally feel it's just a sterotypical excuse? i mean someone hated WoW, then more people followed the one guy, now theres like an anti-WoW cult, WoW isn't a real addictive game, i play i as well, i have a max level raiding character, but i still maintain a social life i still get above 80% aggrigates in school i sill manage to keep my instumental and art skills in form.

okay i know that sounded like i was being a pompous prick, i'm sorry. but i was just proving one aspect wrong.

And for those who ARE addicted to WoW, it's their personal choice really, it's not like Blizzard hires employees that sneak behinid you and threaten to jam needles in your eyes unless you carry on playing. it's the players own personal choice to play the game, so don't blame a game for the players actions ?

Do i see a link here between people blaming WoW for being addictive and the Mothers who blame Manhunt for their nutcase child who just blungeoned someone to death with a hammer?

Ok i didnt mean to anger anyone with the cussing, i just hate hearing that excuse to no end
The Grinding is an excuse I agree with, but I have played many mmos and Wow has been the least grindtastic
And im not sure where you are coming from with the "not enough end game content" stuff :p
All sorts of merry little things to do
and the community is terrible, you got to sort of sift through it to find the good people
we are there, and its not like you can log on to xbox life and be dazzled with all the goodness

Generally, people who put down World of Warcraft players need to put them down. For what reason, I can't say; but what reason does someone have to call the lifestyle of a man a sham, ever, when he's happy with it, and it hurts nobody?

Because it's strange and foreign to them. Also it tends to eat at player's social lives which makes everyone think they're weird. Not to mention that it's popular so it's an easy target to hit. Also, some gamers get board with RPGs and make fun of them.

A number of people I know who took up WoW went from out-going, social butterflies to sun-fearing cave-dwellers upon picking up that game. They changed into different people. It was impossible to get them to do anything, as they were all coordinating raids with people across the planet in their free time and when they did manage to wrest themselves away from it, all they can talk about is the game.

So yes, I've seen what the things do to people, so when I stereotype all MMO players as dirty, unwashed, agoraphobic rejects, I at least have some grounds for it.

I have no criticisms for any MMOs though. I've tried a few, thanks to free trial periods, can see how they could be addictive and I congratulate the various MMO publishers for finding a formula that beats Piracy into a bloody pulp while making gobs and gobs of cash, but won't be making a time/financial commitment to any of them myself. Besides, I love the Sun too much.
