I recently returned to WoW briefly in December after a 5 year hiatus. I was even kicking around the idea of joining a raiding guild and getting back into raiding. But after about a month, I just got bored with it and dropped my sub.

To me the combat in the game is really starting to feel dated. I play mostly melee characters (Fury Warrior in WoW), and after spending a lot of time playing the Souls series in recent years, WoW melee combat just feels archaic. No rolling or dodging or raising a shield to block. No OOMPH or CLANG when your weapon hits something. You just stand there and go through your cooldown rotations ad infinitem, occasionally moving to get out of the fire or whatever. It just gets boring.

The cartoony graphics are kind of silly looking to me, too. I much prefer the dark fantasy realism of the Souls artstyle.

I wish someone would create an MMO with Soulslike combat and Soulslike realistic graphics. I would probably jump back into MMOing with both feet, because I do miss the social aspect of it.

Right now the popular opinion in the WOW forums is that all classes were at their best during Mist of Pandaria.
except they are pruning, people hate pruning.

reader beware, as someone who has played BDO for a year. Yes the combat is dark souls-ish combined with dynasty warriors (ie you regularly fight 5-10 mobs at a time). Dodging is very important on bosses as they can one shot you. Graphics are also dark souls ish.

But be warned, BDO is the most ANTI-social MMO of all time. Every single person in that game is your potential enemy. There is virtually no reward, benefit, or purpose to people cooperating (in fact beyond high level large scale pvp and areas which are designed specifically for group (of which there are like..two out of a few dozen) you are actually PUNISHED for cooperating). Not only that, but you are actively rewarded for behavior that in other games would label you a griefer or troll. So pervasive is the culture of "get mine" that it is like the Twilight Zone.

let me give you a wow example. Lets say you are leveling in wrath of the lich king area, and a level 110 (max level for the people who dont play wow) in top of the line gear goes around killing all the lowbies in the area and clearing the entire zone of mobs such that people can not complete quests. In wow, that behavior, while perfectly legal, would be looked down upon as griefing. In BDO, if a high level/geared person enters a lowbie area, kills the lowbies, and the lowbies refuse to leave even though they were there first and are leveling in an area that was designed for them, the lowbies are considered the griefers because you are FORCING the high level player to kill you.

Yes, in BDO the murderers are considered the victims. Why? Well because in BDO, it is more productive for a high level player to kill 100 wotlk mobs than to kill 50 legion mobs at the same time, even though legion was designed for a player of that level and gear. They gain more exp and gold. Problem is, that player takes up a lot more resources than is intended and this has a trickle down affect. Let me give an example:

Zone A is designed for 12 level 10 players to grind effectively, Zone B is designed for 12 level 20 players to grind effectively, and so on and so forth. Instead of players from level 40 going to Zone D, they instead go to zone C which can only support 3 level 40 players. The level 30 players can not compete, so they go down to Zone B which is designed for level 20 and kick the level 20s out. However, Zone B can only comfortably accommodate 3 level 30 players, and so on and so forth. So these zones which were designed to accommodate 48 players total now only accommodate 12 players. The biggest icing on this cake is, the exp is only about 20-30% more.

That said, bdo does have its charm. The economy is a complex beast, and figuring out how to make a buck is half the fun, especially if you are into making spreadsheets and doing math. You can also make some real money in the most hilarious way. If you have a highly sought item, people will pay you real money not FOR the item, but for you to LIST the item. That is right, people will pay you for the OPPORTUNITY to buy an item.

Oh right, forgot to mention, in BDO your "power level" is directly tied to your bank account, both in terms of how much money you have in game and how much real money you invest. While you cant buy anything that makes you more powerful with real money, you can buy things with RL money that makes it much easier to earn game money which you can use to make yourself much more powerful.

High level pvp is fun and challenging (or so ive heard), but it will probably take you a year if not longer of heavy playing to be able to do that. There are zero catchup mechanics. It would be like if a new player in wow wanted to raid in legion he would have to:

-level to 60
-progress through the dungeons in order to get gear to do vanilla raids
-progress and gearup through each vanilla raid and after getting top of the line vanilla gear can he progress to the next expansion
-rinse and repeat for BC.

Also, there is no "bind on pickup or equip items". every piece of gear or armor you have can be sold, even if you used it.

Oh right, almost forgot. BDO is the biggest grindfest in the history of grindfests.

"but wow is so grindy"

no...just.....no. The level of grinding in wow pales by comparison, in fact, i dont even mind grinding in wow anymore. It is actually relaxing and fun compared to bdo.

.....i really need to take a break from the escapist, i keep making 3-4 hour long posts.

I was around for WoW's launch, suffered from a bad case of alt-itis and didn't hit max level until the night before TBC launched, joined my first raiding guild around the mid-point of TBC's lifespan, rose up in the guild ranks to become their go-to healer for pushing new content, and maintained several raid schedules (I healed for four different raid teams; my main was a Resto Druid, but I also had a Resto Shaman, a Disc Priest, and a Holy Paladin) up until the end of Mists of Pandaria.

Then Warlords happened.

All of that expansion's bullshit utterly destroyed my guild, which had existed since vanilla launch, and had around 200 active players when Warlords launched. Within two months of Warlords coming out, I was one of only four remaining active players. To add insult to injury, even the world felt empty as everyone hid in their garrisons playing glorified mobile games with their mission tables and dumbed-down crafting. Almost overnight the game's community seemed to just sorta vanish.

So I quit, and haven't played since. So far none of the new content has been appealing to me at all. I still actively play other games with most of the people from my main WoW raid team, and they've had no real desire to go back either. Not exactly how I saw my WoW raiding career ending. /shrug.

Maybe the official legacy servers will get me back into the game. I'd certainly be more inclined to play that than any of the new stuff they've been offering... not that Vanilla ranks very high on my favorite periods in WoW's history.

As someone who's been playing since 2005, the xpac is a bit underwhelming for me. We'll see how the raids are, since that's the only thing that keeps me interested ( having given up on the lore a long time ago ). Plus, my guild ( which has been around since 2006) seems to be at least interested in it so I might as well give it a go. Thank goodness for using Blizz bucks to pay for this, first time ever I've paid for a deluxe edition.

If you had to pay money though, with the sub on top of that I would say xpac is not worth it. Been on the beta a couple hours, seems underwhelming so far ( beta being beta, given).

Interesting. The art style does look good. I think I passed on this one last time I was looking around for a new MMO because it seems to lack an endgame. But reading about it, it seems like that's kind of the point. It looks like the progression model is very different than WoW/Guild Wars, etc. I might have to check it out at some point. Thanks.
