It is a fantastic game, but its the time commitment it needs, i have two kids and a misses to look after (there all retarded and depend on me) and cant find enough time to play it (well really i quit because i was addicted to it and my misses went to leave me and take the kids with her ...) but the fact of the matter is, this game would of been truelly awesome it it was single player :) i wanted to see all the dungeons but in the end could not commit that much time to learning the bosses etc etc

Make it single player :D

Most pathetic post i have ever done..
You can put as much time (or as few) into the game as you like ;) I played WotLK only...an hour or 2 a day, hence why it took me 2 months to ding 80 but meeh who cares. The game doesn't force you to play a dozen hours a day.

Cheapskates? Not wanting to pay a monthly fee for a game I already bought (hypothetically as I never have bought it) is being cheap? If I am paying more than the standard price for something I expect it to be pretty damn amazing...

Because it doesn't really reward skill so much as it rewards repetition and time-commitment.
...Which it clearly isn't according to this.

Hell, even if the game is the best one I have ever played, I don't expect to be paying a monthly fee to continue the enjoyment of something I already own.

Yeah, that's a good point. I don't even play every day, and when I do play, it's never for more than 4 hours a day (school holidays =D). I generally only play weekends and the occasional weeknight for an hour or so. It's not addictive if you have any sense of self control, or use of your own MIND.

I think the quote is "It's great! It's like a second job, but you pay to do it!"

Don't get me wrong, I played for a while last year and had a great time, the user community was great, the teamwork meant that even a low level player (myself) could be a valuable addition to the team, even if it was just as a tactition.

My problem with the game is that I pay my money for the installation disk, but if I want to PLAY it I have to pay extra. If the game charge was billed to time spent in-world, I'd have no problem. But it isn't. It's billed in real time, meaning whilst you are playing other games or hanging out with mates, your gametime is being slowly eroded.

I will admit it. I do hate WoW, but it is only because I started D&D as my first actual RPG game. WoW does not have a lot of diversity in the class section. In D&D you can be a warrior who specializes in bows, and you can be any race you want and any class along with it. The individuality is what WoW is lacking. The only thing WoW is doing that I will give a 'thumbs up to' is the whole pre-paid gamer cards. No more credit debt, lol.

In reply to Wordsmith: True, but the game disk does only cost £10 with 30days. I bet that with MOST (not all) XBOX/PS3 games, you will only really play them regularly for about a month anyway, and after that you'll own a new game and will play that for a month, and only occasionally go back to the old games drawers to pull out an old friend. At least with Warcraft, if you know you will only play for a month, you only pay for a month.

I have played WoW and i'll be honest i didn't like it, the idea that paying monthly to play a game that many people are likely to get addicted to seems to high, the roleplaying servers is where it got all it's bad publicity. And the difference between WoW and 100% oblivion addicts is that you can finish Oblivion, WoW is near enough neverending, you can pure oblivion for a couple of weeks and finish it before there is nothing else to do while WoW you spend months doing near enough the exact same thing over and over without completing it.....

Anybody have opinions on what i just said ????

Its good when you're into it and enjoying it... but really you're only prolonging the painful extraction of this addiction from your soul... all for the better mind. Now you can... actually do stuff with your life, instead of spending literally MONTHS of your life sat... playing... ONE game.
Can we please drop the 'WoW players do nothing but play WoW and are addicted' stereotype its boring and wrong.

Anyway. I don't see why you (the OP) cares so much about why its hated. If you enjoy the game then good for you, if someone doesn't like it well good for them.

ok - not quite the response you are after, but seeing as this thread seems to be full of 'the knowledgeable' wow people, players, ex players, lovers, haters...I have decided to take the plunge.

One of my bessie buddies is a wow addict and while my husband is away for 2 weeks for work I've decided to take up a 10 day trial. I have settled for Undead Mage as my race and class and I was wondering if anyone had any advice

EDIT: Re reading my post makes me think that I sounded a bit like I was having an affair with WOW in my hubbies absense LOL

Well, i don't mind if someone has played the game and decides it's a bad game or anything like that, that's their decision and their opinion. What does annoy me is the people who insult players of WoW and other MMORPGs when they have never even played one. And yes, the RP servers suck. It's no different to any other online game, it's just got the reputation for Nerdiness because of the RP servers.

(I'm gonna describe the game for anyone that has lived in a cave for the last 6years)World of Warcraft is an MMORPG that has many playable races and classes, including Orc, Human, Undead, and Night Elf etc. It takes a good amount of play time to get to a good level, and there are lots of different armours and weaponary, as well as a good level of character specialisation and customisation. There is a lot of group-based activities, such as dungeons and raids, involving from 2-5 players (dungeons) to as many as 1000 players (raids). The Player Vs Player facilities have various maps and objectives to ensure an all round enjoyable experience.
OK. Advert over. The game is hated by many gamers who have obviously NEVER PLAYED THE GAME! They say it turns you into a depressed nerd who never leaves the computer. Well yes, some players are like that, but there are just as many players like that on other MMORPGs and many standard console games, such as the 100% completists on Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Fable II etc. If you HAVE completed every quest on Oblivion, just check the amount of time on your game save, and I can assure you, it will be less time than it would take an average player to get to the last level of World of Warcraft.
Then again, if you LIKE there to always be more quests and jobs to do, there is. Once you hit level 80, the game is far from over, in fact, a new game really begins. You have all of the best skills and abilities yes, but you can nearly always get better armour, by taking part in huge raids on dungeon teams, and by doing some PvP for the rewards.
And then there is the profession system. You learn two professions as your skills, allowing you to create or upgrade certain things depending on the proffesion. Most proffesions are in pairs, such as Mining and Blacksmithing, or Skinning and Leatherworking, where the first proffesion compliments the second by allowing you to mine or create the materials for free.
So you have all the armours and skills, you have fully levelled your proffessions and the three other default proffesions. What's next? There's always more PvP, and you can go achievement hunting if you're that way inclined (the new achievement system features a points system, much like that on the XBOX 360). And anyway, I'm sure Blizzard will realease another expansion in the next few years. In fact, the latest expansion allowas you to create a certain type of character that is already about halfway through the levels, if you have already got there on another character. So once you have sorted your old character to the top, play this other there as well, or start completely afresh. The game changes completely depending on your class and which Talent Tree (Skill set) you specialise in, so it really never gets old. I think it's worth the subscription fee.
I stopped reading there.

Also, as I pasted it into this text box, I saw the next sentence about the PvP system.

I will not flame you. I will simply state that you are misinformed and that the game has many, MANY undeniable flaws.

I'm not saying it's flawless, I'm just saying that a lot of the arguments people have against it are false, and could easily be disproved if they palyed the game for the trial.

Just play as much as you want to play. If your undead, the stating area really leads you through it all. You come out of the little town or Deathknell and end up in Brill. The quests are self explanatory. If you feel you want to start properly, its worth getting an Addon or 2 to help you along. I don't really know much about undead as I have never got past lvl 14 with one (except my undead Death Knight but that doesn't count)

To tell the truth, I played Lineage 2 MMO for 3 years. I've done a lot of things with the people from my clan and met a wonderful girl who was my girlfriend for the last 2 years, which only added to my enjoyment of the game even if this "bonus" wasn't included on the package. As yahtzee pointed out, all MMO are the same stuff. It doesn't really matter if they're Korean made or American made. They're all the same shit. I also never payed a subscription. I played on a private server, and the game software was free to download off the official website. So after so much time in an mmo I think I can have an educated guess as to how things are. Without further addo, I will state why I don't care for World of Warcraft.

Number 1. It is repetitive. Despite diversity and stuff and the fact that you can customize your character to some degree, it's all really constrictive. Maybe warcraft has a bit more customization than Lineage 2 had, but at the end, it's the same character dressed in the same best piece of armor out there that forums said is best for that class at that specific level. It doesn't matter what skill tree you take because usually the difference between actual skills is almost unperceived or the other skills simply aren't useful. In the offshot that some of them are, I'll say that they're the exception to the rule.

Number 2. The players themselves. It is hard enough to find quality people in real life to consider them quality friends. Let's assume that they don't particularly care to join your newest quest to find the onyx dick and plant it in i don't know who's ass in order to stop the Litch King. Decent people on the internet are so few and far between it's a miracle if you can find a guild that doesn't have at most 5 people that piss you off. I'm saying that on the offshot that you're a more tolerant person than I. With my older clan I hated with a frenzy 5 people, disliked 10, were neutral about 20. The rest of 10 or something people or what added to the maximum, I forget, were the only decent people I knew, and with some I still talk. I also had to put up with all the flame wars and the drama between clan leaders, clan members and whatever, going on and on about who's sausage is longer. You will never find this in a roleplaying community. If for some reason something like this does occur, it's usually dealt with swiftly, unless the server owner is amused. Also, the community is the tool for spreading leetspeak and the subsequent and thorough mutilation of the English language, and other languages.

Number 3. Recurring payment. I have already payed for the content in this game. Why do I need to pay more? I agree, new content needs to be payed hence expansion packs. Hell make em pay for patches. But not recurring payments. Guild wars managed this (this might be old info or something of the sort, but that's what I heard). Why can't you? Again I say, I never payed for playing Lineage 2 and never would have if that would have been the only option.

Number 4. I'm going to assume that you have spent over 1000$ of subscription fees and purchases related to gameplay in Warld of Warcraft. When the servers finally shut down, you have just spent 1000$ worth of other games on World of Warcraft. With that money you could have bought a shitload of games that were all better, more lifechaning, more fulfilling, more thought provoking and most importantly MORE FUN than world of warcraft. Dwell on that thought for more than a second. And I bet that most of the high levels out there today passed the 1000$ mark of their or their parent's money, way before my posting of this.

Number 5. It's simple as breathing. There are no real tactics involved in that game. The only tactical challenges Lineage 2 offered, was in the wars, but they turned chaotic fast, and how to avoid the annoying but powerful enough mobs till the place you wanted to farm. I was especially good at the latter.

I apologize for the long post, but I felt it necessary to say that while some people may care for world of warcraft, in my opinion it is the game with the worst expense to experience ratio out there to boot. The fun only lasts a short while and returns only when you do something spectacular, like kill the 1000 people raid, rape everyone from the alliance/horde in pvp, get the awesomesauce armor and that's it. But 90% of the time, you will be farming. Either quests, players or mobs. And to quote Yahtzee again, I don't need another job I have to pay for.

Because WoW is really, really not a good game. 100% grindfest, shittiest customer service EVER, and horrifically imbalanced classes in what it tries to do with pvp. It is an MMO for people new to MMOs, and the only redeeming quality is that there are so many other fuckwits playing that you can find people you are smarter than.

Well, I used to think like that, but then I played the game and I was a bit addicted, but then I stop playing (mostly to save money) and now I realise that it is boring. Whenever I go near a MMORPG, I feel bored. Back to normal console games now.
I'm gonna have to agree. Mindless repetition isn't really my thang.
