So the new Blizzard MMO is a shooter?

Copied from a blog post:
According to a very tiny article on a site with questionable ethics (which is my way of saying I probably shouldn't link it here), a French website called NoFrag has possibly been the first to leak details about the upcoming and intermittently controversial new MMO IP from MMO giant, Blizzard.

According to the piece I read, the upcoming and as of yet unnamed game will feature first-person shooter style play (FPS), with social interactions similar to that of The Sims Online. The site also mentions that there are still undetailed game mechanics that will also play into the new MMO.

My thoughts; An MMO that isn't about number crunching, statistics, and math, and more about actual skill and play? This is the first tidbit of news about Blizzards new online game that has actually managed to get my attention. As a past WoW veteran, I'm pretty much over the old macro based tomfoolery most MMO games have to offer. Who knows what any of this means if in fact it's true?

Blizzard has stated in the past that the new IP will not be related to anything out right now, so if that statement holds true than World of Starcraft it's not. Which I find even more enticing, and a new universe offers all sorts of new possibilities. Either way, keep your eyes peeled and your ears to the ground, kids, the info's finally a-comin'!
So I'm interested in what WoW oldsters think, and whether or not current players would consider this switch a favorable one. Commence speculation!

I'm probably just being a Cynic - but it won't work.

The grind is what people expect from MMO's and It's what they get - the action way has been tried and tested, but World of Warcraft has grind right up the arse and it does just fine.

Well, if someone would succeed setting a new norm for MMOs, I think it would be Blizzard.

And I'd be interested in something new made by Blizzard.

I'm certain I read that they were intending on running both WoW and their new MMO simultaneously, and that they wouldn't really compete with one another.

This seems pretty exciting. Blizzard usually has pretty high quality games, but knowing blizzard i probably won't be out for 10 years. Good to know its not starcraft though, because from what i understand, Ghost was a complete failure, so at least they won't be trying to bring that back again

You honestly think blizzard would do anything new for MMOs? WoW is just more of the same. Every expansion is MORE OF THE SAME. New quests, new raids all of it is just MORE OF THE SAME. Boring, dull sameness. There's nothing new about it. And it works. I doubt Blizzard would get off their cashcow.
Blizzard is such a huge company that they wouldn't risk a thing trying out something new.
And there's noone saying that this new MMO couldn't run alongside WoW. Double the cash, you know?

Plus, they've already shown their willingness to revamp old successful games. Just look at Diablo 3, that looks like it's going to be a lot different than the first and second.

I'm not sure I like WoW enough to go with them on another product of a similar type. Yes I have it, but I'm not dragged towards it, It's just fun now and then.

I really, really hope it succeeds. But it probably won't :(. But if it does, I will be extremely happy/satisfied.

If you take Blizz time in to consideration I'd say this MMO is 5 or more years away. They've already pushed back SC 2 and D3. The only game that seems to be on time, not counting patches, is WoW. As for me, I'm not much of a multiplayer FPS person, I like my FPS game play to be singular.

*Gasp*
Their expansions...expand on existing mechanics?

OT: Sounds interesting. I'm not into FPSs all that much, so I'll probably stick with WoW

This new MMO is based on an entirely new IP by Blizzard. This has been confirmed. So no Starcraft, Diablo, or Warcraft involved. They are also calling it a "next-gen" MMORPG, meaning they plan to have a completely different type of game from World of Warcraft.
Yeah, I just used Diablo as example. I read the OP. ;)

My point is; Blizzard has the name, the money and the skill to make something different work.
