Phillies won. News at eleven. And now I'm going to be forced to listen to the Rocky theme over and over...as I live in Philly...

You know what's really odd?

When something is called the world series but I (being quite sure of the fact that I do indeed live in the world) have no clue what you are talking about.

Just thought I'd share that with you.

It's the superbowl of baseball...and I don't care that my city's team won as I won't get any sleep due to everyone honking their horns and launching fireworks...

It is strange when a baseball event is called the World Series but it is only held and participated by U.S. baseball teams.

Again, I'm only vaugely aware of what the superbowl is, the only knowledge I have of it would be from watching the Simpsons. As far as I know it involves American football, beer, fat people and televisions.
Well anyway, sucks to be you I guess.

But I still find it odd that something that apparently only takes place in America is called a world series.

Hey. I don't care 'bout sports. And it should be called the US Series, but it didn't sound dramatic enough for us Americans to say. I'm glad/mad that my town's team won...

Ugh hate the phillies(fans mostly) my experience with them is not good. I'm more of a Cubs fan, and braves (cause they are sorta local to me) And it isn't just US teams there is Toronto :)

Ah well... The Rocky theme isn't that bad.
You'll get through it.

Oh of course!
Everyone knows US + Toronto = World.
(insert smiley of your choice here, I refuse you use them but wish to imply that no anger was intended in this message)

Congrats to the Phillies, although I was hoping that the Rays would have been able to push the series to at least another game. Ah, well, they'll be back soon, while the Phillies will likely slip back into mediocrity next year (like my beloved Tigers sadly have).

And the reason it's called the World Series is because it's composed of the two best teams in America made up of the best players in the world playing for the championship. It's like how the NBA title is referred to as the World Championship, although I suspect that's more out of tradition now than actual skill (still, I'd imagine an actual unified team like the Pistons, Lakers or Celtics would fare better in world competition than the glorified All-Star "me first" squads we were sending for a while there).

Well now I know.
Exactly how international is the player base though? Are we talking Europeans or just the Occasional Mexican?

iron i thought you would know we Americans are a boisterous bunch. really what sounds better world champs of American champs. although in truth the title world champs is fitting because in reality, could anywhere else produce a team that could beat the world champs of baseball? i think you'd be hard pressed to find many places outside of Latin America or japan that could beet the mariners or nationals(the 2 worst teams in the league).

I'm not sure if you're joking and just trying to get on my nerves or not...

I don't think other countries would give it much thought, since outside of the US it's only Latin America and Japan that really play baseball that much.
But realistically, I imagine that it would be entirely possible for Europeans or Africans to become good baseball players if they set their minds to it. It seems highly unlikely that Americans have some sort of "be much better at baseball" gene or anything.
Besides last time I checked, the Cricket world cup (or whatever the cricket world championship thing is called) isn't played entirely in Australia.

Anyway, it's still a really stupid name.

And I apologise profusely to the OP, since his original premise of "help! I wont be able to get to sleep through all the loud music and partying!" seems to have been largely ignored.
And I can only blame myself for that.

I'm sorry.

I'm close enough to Philly and willfully distant enough from baseball to say, with full conviction:

"Thank god this crazy nonsense is over."

Need I remind you people this is BASEBALL? A game where a score of 4 to 3 is considered justifiable after 3 hours of a network not airing something actually engaging? Where grown men are paid $20 million a year to hit a ball with a stick and/or catch that ball after someone else has hit it with a stick?

I know all you so-called baseball fans are faking it. The World Series is to baseball what Christmas and Easter are to Christianity - everyone shows up then because they feel bad about ignoring it the rest of the year, plus they know that the only time it's ever going to get even a little more interesting is then. The only people I know of who genuinely like baseball are 8 year old boys who still believe in muscly heroes and the boring, self-absorbed slabs of person who desire nothing more than to be said muscly heroes, probably just because it pays so well and they don't know what else to do with themselves.

Oh, and my dad. Who frequently wonders what's wrong with me that I yell at video games, yet spent three hours tonight yelling at baseball men on TV.

People rock so hard.

I know there's a lot of Spanish, and East-Asian players. Japan, and South Korea are some of the bigger non-US TV markets for MLB. Though I dont think it's anywhere near the international presence of, say, the NHL.

@bluesader. Actually there are genuine baseball fans out there not just people who watch the series. I personally followed all season went to chicago in may to see the Cubs, wrigley field fans are awesome(the city sucks so badly though with all the beggers out at night, and god-aweful food and no sweet tea) haha . But some of us do actually like it because it's entertaining to watch with all the strategy and skill involved.

Football is still much more exciting to watch though compared to basebal I willadmit baseball is a slow sport. Go Titians 7-0!!
