The third world war will be caused by economy, and will be an economical war mainly along with regional conflicts, in the middle east notably.
Well, I expect an economical war. Economical sanctions, deals getting cut-off, recession, possible depression, propaganda, and re-centralisation of economy.
I see it more likely as the other type of war which directly kills massively.
Cyber warfare, like in one of the Splinter Cell games? I see that as more likely than total war. Attack a country's economy, communications, etc., and eventually their ability to function as a country, let alone fight, will be destroyed.

I also agree with the idea of a few regional conflicts, but only where cyber warfare is not viable (i.e. the Middle East).

Oh you bunch of pessimists. It will bring us all closer together. We'll all be willing to share with our troubled brethren and perhaps the US will finally get rid of those ridiculous SUVs.

:)

In the future, war will be fought in counter-strike.

Maybe all sides will agree that nuclear weapons should be off-limits, but that's a mighty iffy maybe.
What he said. I don't think it matters how it starts or who it's between, in the end we'd all probably lose i.e. nuclear winter or worse.

I have an underground bunker. Wage war, mortals, for when the smoke has cleared, there shall only be one true victor!

Time to put on my serious cap:

With America guzzling 40% of the world's oil(or something like that, Wikipedia's too far away), and prices as high as $8(again, opening a browser = too much work) in Europe, eventually, were gonna have to get off our asses and do something. Oil could spark (Ha ha, get it? Spark? As in fire? Aww, I crack me up) a war. If I had to take a vote though, I'd say it'd start by Islam attacking Jerusalem, and someone getting evolved.

I'd love it if wars were fought in videogames. Then I can actually use my abilities for something productive, and I can be a soldier! Who needs muscles to join the army, huh? Not me.

Actually they're already deploying remote controlled robots in the battlefield, and they're supposed to be a lot like an FPS

At the reason for sounding ...... Is it called country centric? Ego? Whatever.

Anyhow im happy that I live in Sweden should there be an oil shortage, Anyone who knows anything about my contry knows why.

On another note I think that if the leaders would go to war the people should rise up!

Yeayeah I know im imaginative but I just want to hope for the best for once.

You wanna call it a war? I call it "A free ticket into nothing" because that will happen. Also I think that the 3rd world war will be the fight for water not oil because that is the most important thing.

I'm going to go with Eastern Civilization (Asia) against Western Civilization (Europe and America and Australia?), its a wonder that we all came from the same planet.

World War 3 is more of a matter of when than if. It may not happen in our life times, but there is always someone out there trying to enforce their beliefs on others. I'm looking at you religion and America!

should World War 3 occur, it would be doubtful that nuclear weapons be used. It would be like any other conflict that's been going on in any part of the world... guns, rockets, grenades, knives, blunt objects, tanks, warships, fighters/bombers, etc.

Not sure how Africa fits into this though...
Africa could play a decent role in WW3, It would be a potential landing zone for U.S Occupants, Controlling the Mediterranean so that supply to the middle east slows to a trickle.

(That is if its a war in the middle east for oil.)

They'd probably be exploited.

Bah, the possible reasons I see a WW3 would be

A.Water
B.Oil
C. China pissed at the USA, because they won't pay what they own them.
D. Idiots tries to challenge the Darwin theory on a massive scale.

To tell the truth, if anything happens it'll be when America inevitably falls in power to China but doesnt like it.

Russia/Georgia? Meh, minor problem to be honest.

And as for oil running out in the US. Look at the oilsands in Canada, i think theres a few hundreds of years worth in there...

I, for one, endorse the Tom Clancy's EndWar scenario. It's startlingly realistic.

Read:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Clancy%27s_EndWar_(novel)

To sum up, the entire world goes to war over oil. I think this was mentioned above by someone. Anyways, the energy crunch, along with a confluence of other factors to include TMDs and nuclear wars in the Middle East, ignite the flashpot and start the EndWar or - World War III.
