Would it be possible now to have a world war without the use of nuclear weapons? I'm a little hesitant to say yes to that, but looking at some of the most recent military conflicts in our history (Cold War, Lebanon and Gaza Wars, and the Georgia War this summer), I think that its possible to wage a war with developed nations and withold the use of nuclear weapons these days. What do you guys think?

EDIT 1: I still believe that the concept of MAD is alive and well. I think that world leaders understand this if they ever get into a full-blown war with another nuclear armed nation.

well, imo the days of mass warfare are gone, as every nation knows if they group their troops together they'll be green-lighted for a nuke :p

Cogito is right, I don't think there will ever really be another mass war again. From here on out it will mostly be mini-wars and incursions (like in Gaza) where there is perhaps fighting for a few days or weeks but eventually both sides retreat to original positions.

MAD is probably what stops there being large scale attacks, unless they develop Mini-Nukes or finally manage to get some sort of Anti-Nuke shield in place. Then maybe Large Scale conflicts will return.

if there is a mass war nukes will be involved, I think personally it may sounds rather harsh we do need something to kill some of us off. Otherwise were going suck the food sources dry.

Hopefully they won't be involved. No country could be that stupid, could it?

I hope that next summer President Obama approves the nuke deflectors in Poland and the Czeck Republic, I also hope that the US finally finishes project star wars
For the uninnitiated, project star wars is a missile defense system based around small suicide bomber-esque sattelites that detonate to knock missiles off course in space, causing them to (hopefully) explode in orbit, or leave orbit, or at the least, miss New York city

I'd like to think you're right, but I'm not so sure really. All it takes is one person in power to press a button...

I think its imposable to have another global war not using nukes.

but, thanks to nukes, a war may never come, people know what nukes can do. the U.S. used them and the world saw what the nukes are capable of.

I don't think that anyone wants that to happen.

its kind of funny, the strongest, deadliest weapons in the world are also the main reason no one wants a world war, no one wants to get nuked

I don't really know too much about it myself, but I thought that those satellites fired lasers at the missile's fuel tanks that would either destroy it outright or leave it floating listlessly in space.

That. I don't care if that shield will be ~200-300 away from me (or less, not sure where it'll be exactly), as long as it protects from missiles.

We really need to destroy every nuke ever made. There is no use for them! We should not have thousands of these fuckers just sitting around. Its like the US, give everyone a gun then wonder why so many people get shot. It only a matter of time until one of these bastards gets used and I just hope I'm long gone by then.

I hope Poland and the Czech republic don't let themselves be bullied by America into building them, anyway hopefully in a nuclear exchange we can let America and China/Russia nuke each other into oblivion and with any luck everyone else will just stay cool and so we will survive nicely until the nuclear winter sets in and everyone starves. Then we commence world war 3, we shall rule the globe, mahahaha

We (Poland) are not getting bullied by America. We actually want that shield. Especially now, since the Russians already said that armed threats are wrong, China is, however, a bit unpredictable. And Middle East.

It depends on whether treaties are passed before a war breaks out, or if the key players don't have nukes or are close enough for the nuclear fallout from the destruction of their enemies to affect them.

That's all fine and dandy...but if it misses new york it will probably veer off course and hit me! just kidding. They need the missile defense grid from endwar. That would end nukes for sure! and airplanes, and missiles, and large flocks of birds...
