Drummie666-I was going to respond to your post, but then I stopped in the middle of typing, froze up, and began to cry.

Then I talked to myself for ten minutes.

For me, worst protagonist is the Warden from Dragon Age. No matter who you play as the lines you're given are almost always incredibly bland and personality-less, at least when you're trying to do the serious role playing. The subplot resolutions for the origins are laughably executed and you can barely keep track of how you've decided to act because the companion approval system is utterly useless. And of course, worst of all, the Warden is completely irrelevant to all the story. If you took him/her out you could easily have Alistair take their place and it would be exactly the same story.

A lot of people saying DMC said Dante. To a point I agree, but I found Nero in DMC 4 to be even worse. He has all of Dante's infuriating smugness with a lot of namby-pamby wussiness. ARGGGGHHHH!!!

Im going to say Kane and Lynch, I literally played the first game for 5 minutes and said...screw this, nothing redemable about eather of them

that said the whole "horrible people doing horrible things to each othr" can actually work if handled the right way, AKA saints row 2 the boss was a completley sociopathic ***** but I loved her anyway, when its played straight its just unplesant

anyway been thinking of getting Prototype, should I let this put me off?

Rico from Just Cause 2 was a horrible protagonist, blowing up fuel tanks, generators, water towers, and disarming 3 nukes that fall on Panau and sending the other one into a goddamn oil field. WTF?!

Kratos is probably one of the worst protagonists out there. He ends up dooming the world basically by killing all the gods that control the important stuff.

Also, depending on the choices you make, YOU could be the worst protagonist ever in the Fallout games or the more recent Elder Scrolls.

Nearly all humans in every fantasy rpg. Self righteous pricks who always seem to be the race of "the chosen one".

Plus, if they're not self-righteous dickheads, then there usually bumbling idiots who cause the "great and terrible evil" to be unleashed upon the land.

Stupid humans, we should just kill them all... wait

its been a while since I played but I remember there being ALOT of dialouge options (as oposed to say fallout 3 or Mass effect, (although thats helped by being voiced, unless your playing male default shepard compared to the rest of the cast he's blander than plain white rice and yet hes also the face of the series...*sigh*)

I supose the blandess of the warden is subjective but I liked my characher (Elf who goes around and massecres an enitre caslte in her wedding dress, on her wedding day, now thats badass)

anyway Dragon age is a million times better for role playing than Oblivion (in fact Id say its a million times better than oblivion...there I said it) there are NO dialogue options, you are empty space at least in DA your a charachter, In Oblivion your a walking camera, it really killed the game for me

anc[is]The Space Marines. Giant dicks in a universe filled with jerks, except one tiny corner of the universe where the Tau live.
Yeah! And the Tau too, because they forcibly sterilize alien populations and run an operation comparable to Communist China!

EDIT: Also, Link and Midna in Twilight Princess--one was a pedophile, and the other just rubbed me the wrong way.

The "except the Tau" mindset is why GW changed some of the Tau fluff. People thought they were too likable to to fit in to the 40k universe proper. Now rather than incorporate other aliens into their empire as their social equals, the Tau give little heed to anything but the battlefield prescence of their alleged allies. No one wants to join the Tau, so they use power of trade and send diplomat-spies to spread seeds of doubt to incite rebellion within the Imperium. Plus if you don't join them, they'll kill you or use their ever so subtle GIANT MIND CONTROL HELMETS.

"oh we suck at close quarters combat, let's use a couple dozen mutant cannibalistic birds with 18th century weaponry against the eight-foot tall, genetically enhanced, chainsword-wielding, fully-automatic 70mm grenade-launcher toting, SPECE MAHRINES! Yeah, we aren't using our allies as cannon fodder at all."

Plus, the Imperium is supposed to be the most relatable faction. I mean, they ARE the humans, so they should be the protagonists, right? Specifically, the Adeptus Astartes should be the "good guys", but they are clearly not. They're supposed to be the surgeon's needle of the forces of Mankind; the special forces sent in to eliminate a foe as efficiently as possible.

Now consider these Space Marines come across a planet even rumored to be tainted by Chaos. Their standard operating procedure is screw the billions of civilians, bombard the planet, and nuke it from orbit... just to be sure.

Bottom line: Tau =/= protagonists & Space Marines = assholes

A friend of mine loaned me this game, but the main character was just so obnoxious that I couldn't get more than 30 minutes in before it became too painful.

I havnt played many Fantasy RPG (one really) but at least they arnt as bad as the fucking elvess

thats what I love about dragon age, it takes thease common fantasy cliches and works with them,(even choosing your race) theres no "chosen one" but an order called the grey wardens, and your joining them is pretty much pure luck (because those races you didnt choose? the dwarf, and elf? they died, you would have died to unless duncan came to visit)

plus being "the chosen one" sucks, if you are the one to kill the big bad you die as well and if you dont end up striking the final blow...

you have the taint meaning that you only have a shorter time to live before you start going mad, then the done thing to do it wander off into the deeproads and take down as many darkspwn as you can in a blaze of glory....oh and dont worry about having children thats not possible (I think)

oh and the elves are not all arrogant pricks and are likeable

I won't mention any video game characters, but instead point at some random anime characters!

The "good guys" from High School of the Dead that everyone's supposed to cheer for.

I would MUCH rather be sterile than sacrificed to chaos, processed into bio-goo, slaughtered for no reason, be drafted as cannon fodder, sacrificed to chaos by a different group, or killed just for being alive.

3 children in a trench coat
Rico from Killzone 2.

He is literally the least likable protagonist ever created.

Why is everyone hating on Vaan? He wasn't a bad character and he is way better than almost every character in 13. Consider him the lesser of evils?

Desmond Miles, who is by far the most boring protagonist I have ever played as, even the ghosts in Pacman have more personality than him.

I'd rather be dead than living an imitation life. But each to his own.

Blueskin scum.

Kratos is a dick? Kratos murdered EVERYTHING. For vengeance. I'm sorry, there is little doubt as to who's the worst protagonist.
He's just not a good hero, there's a difference.

Unfortunately, unless you are of the actual Tau species, you will be either mind-controlled or forced into economic servitude to the point where you have to fight to survive. Even if you are a Tau, you will likely be fighting all those above mentioned nasties merely on the whims of your pheremone-reeking overlord ethereals.

And if you aren't Tau to begin with, then its the worst of both worlds: you will be cannon fodder, you may well be sacrificed to chaos, you could also be processed into bio-goo, you will undoubtably die a horrifically painful and meaningless death, but above all else... YOU WILL ALSO BE STERILE

If I am going to suffer some terrible fate, but could choose whether or not to be sterile, I'd choose to not be sterile. Cuz who wouldn't want to raise a child in the 40k universe?

It's not so much that he was bad, more that he was useless in regards to the plot he had no real impact on the story aside from just tagging along with Balthier and Fran. Kinda like Luke from Star Wars, everything happens around him and he just kinda goes along with it without taking much initiative to actually do something.
