Myst Online's community is pleasant and friendly to the point of being Stepfordian, which scares a lot of people. :D

Worst I've encountered would be the Starcraft scene. I now refuse to play with anyone I don't know personally.

I'd give it to Sony fanboys. They're more numerous than Xbox and louder than Nintendo. They usually stink up comments looking for anyone to disagree or dislike whatever Sony is pushing at the moment. They also seem to have the largest number of children AND adults: the former brings in obnoxiousness and the latter a spike in societal disappointment.

Best, I'd give it to the Bethesda modding community. From what I've seen, drama is almost completely drowned out by people's passion for creating new content. They're also very hard workers - some people spend more time making a mod than I did playing the game.

I quit WoW solely because I was sick of the elitism present in that game. The raids were fun, when people weren't being dicks, but those raids were few and far between and I felt my life slipping away waiting for that one group not expecting heroic raid-level dps in raid finder pugs. I've never been a part of any MOBA community simply from everything I've heard about those games, and I'm not that into the pvp scene.

That said, when I was a part of a competitive pvp guild in Guild Wars 2, that was some of the most fun I've ever had with 50 friends and I'd do it again in a heartbeat if I thought that the guild I was a part of might last longer than a month.

ESO's community, aside from the occasional "Ur DPS Sux Lurn 2 play!" types (rare but becoming more common in veteran levels) is really good. The active guilds are really active, many with 50-100 active players at any moment, and since you can join up to 5 guilds, you can find a guild for any playstyle and not have to leave if you outgrow them as you'd have to in WoW if you wanted to raid. Cities are well populated and trolls are few and far between. I have a huge backlog of games but I'm finding it harder and harder to pull myself away from this game.

Elite: Dangerous has been adding more social features as of late, with grouping around beacons, open comm channels, etc. It's nice to pull up to a space station and see one player complimenting another's ship. Makes the game feel more alive. With that, I'll be dropping by the beacon in Erevate tomorrow and I'll see how that goes.

I raise you to PC gaming "elitists". Whenever there is a discussion about multiplatform games, they always jump in to yell that "it's better on PC, peasants", and if it's an exclusive, they yell "it WOULD have been better on PC, peasants" and everything revoliving around these 2 statements. Thank you, Yahtzee, for giving these folks their own "memes".

But, to be honest, I personally think (well, HOPE at least) that half of the "master race" is a bunch of trolls, while others can't get their hands on consoles they like because of this or that reason, so they try to justify the position they are in by claiming its superiority. I want to believe that people who actually have PC's that will be able to run Witcher 3 on ultra settings just don't give 2 shits about any kind of console war.

Also, about Sony community. I think the platform with most sales attracts most idiots. During PS3/XBox 360 era, XBox fanboys/gals were a lot more annoying.

As for the best community... You know what? I'll go with Escapist. While it IS advised to stay away from anything that has something to do about political and social problems, when it comes to gaming and nerdy things, you guys are funny, helpful, respectful and otherwise A-Okay.

What's funny is that I think many former Xbox fanboys migrated to Sony recently due to new gen launch. I was a Sony fan during the PS3 era and let me tell you, there wasn't many of us until the very very end. Xbox fanboys outnumbered us my a mile most of last gen. The same way you describe Sony fanboys is EXACTLY how I saw 360 fanboys last gen. (Both loud and numerous. They went out of their way to make insane amounts of "PS3 has no games" memes, and kids on Xbox live became a meme as well) I think we have a load of hipsters on our hands who have migrated sides. Fanboys of the latest trend as right now it is trendy to like Sony due to Xbone's launch debacle. As well, the Wii made it hip to hate on Nintendo. So Sony is housing all the hipsters this gen by the looks of it.

My apologies as a Sony fan. The good news (as a Sony fan) is the Wii-U is making a bit of a trendy splash finally so Nintendo should end up housing some of the annoying ones too soon. However, from my perspective Xbone is a wild card and it is gonna be extremely hard for them to garner a net positive in consumer reception and trend again. This means that Xbox fans will be some really upstanding people this gen. ;P (Then again, I may be an annoying one O.O)

OT: The best community I have been in is Civfanatics which is just a forum where you talk about the Civilization series. Civ 5 threw in some turmoil it seems but I also departed from the forums at that time.

Not a specific gaming community, but I find fans of classic RPGs to be pretty insufferable. Namely because every time Bethesda or Bioware release a new game, those people flock in droves to screech about how gaming is ruined, and nothing is as good as it used to be, and the people who like those new games are casual scum, or whatever.

See, as someone who's played both the newer RPGs (eg, Mass Effect, Skyrim, Deus Ex: Human Revolution), and the older ones (Fallout 1 & 2, KOTOR, System Shock 2) I honestly prefer the direction the newer ones have gone in. So naturally, I'm not a fan of being told my preferences in games makes me stupid. I know I shouldn't let it bother me, but I feel as if those people live in an echo chamber and don't seem to realise not everyone who prefers DA:I to Diablo is out to get them.

I don't have a lot of community involvement outside of this website (I hate online multiplayer), but I do play minecraft and I think it's pretty good at giving both the best and worst of what gaming has to offer. There's a lot of creativity, resourcefulness and camaraderie; but on the flipside 'griefer' wasn't a common term in gamer parlance before that game.

Oddly enough the owner of the server I play on used to be quite a troll; ironic given that the server is so strict about griefing.

Well one persons experiences are not indicative of the community as a whole but it does shape how you see it.

My recent best experience that leaps to mind is FFXIV Realm Reborn was really surprised at how helpful people are in that so far I have only seen one person throw a tantrum and it was pretty restrained i.e no swearing. Had a few instances where a tank or healer obviously does not know what to do and gets everyone wiped multiple times. When this happened in WOW or War people would lose their shit but here people just seem to offer pointers and try and help them do their jobs. I have no doubt that some players will be toxic and in the higher level stuff I reckon people will get more snippy but so far its great.

The worst I have found tends to be PVP in strongly enforced team based settings (i.e you have to work together to win because lone wolfing is near impossible) that has a large install base nothing like having to rely on others and have others to blame for your mistakes against other players to bring out the bile (as long as there is anonymity ofc).

Worst: Any and all MOBA's and Fighters. They're extremly hostile towards anyone that plays diffrently than they do. Monster hunter is pretty bad too. You'd think you'd actually give advice and help out in a game about cooperation.

The good: Minecraft and Mother are very good. Harvest Moon and Animal crossing are full of nothing but helpful people.

MOBAs are the worst. Fighting game communities can get pretty bad sometimes too, but only in the sense that certain games get dismissed because of elitism and the perception of one game being "better" than others when almost every fighting game is at least great. Or the stupid distinction between "anime" fighters and Street Fighter or something. Doesn't even make sense.

Otherwise, I find a lot of fighting games to generally have cool folks who are usually pretty chill. But that's not always the case.

FFXIV has a decent community at times. Don't mind it too much, though I do get irked when someone can't figure something out after 2 or 3 wipes. Does that count as elitism?

Heven't you heard? There is only one gaming community, which is toxic.

Ehh, on a serious note:
DotA is relatively bad (as are all Mobas). Dark Souls has a really bad reputation.

Best I experienced was probably EvE Online, but that is an universe in itself.

I know I'm just going to sound really petty here, but the Five Nights at Freddy's community drives me insane.

Backstory time, children!

[image width=275]http://cdn.funniestmemes.com/wp-content/uploads/Funniest_Memes_story-time-with-danny-trejo_767.jpeg[/IMG]

See in 2010, Call of Duty: Black Ops was released and the Zombies mode within it started getting all focused on the story. Let's just say that the until-then quiet community of fans began madly speculating, largely due in part to YouTube stars trying to capitalise off the success of Black Ops. One picture somewhere would apparently link to a scenario hinted at in Map B, which is confirmed by a poster from World at War and if you bake that in headcanon for a day and post it on the internet you create the ultimate way to piss Evonisia off. What's worse is that Treyarch basically fucked it's own interesting story (if cliché) with the map Moon, where they just conformed to the fan's speculation knowing there would be a backlash if they didn't create an ending that would suit to them. Moon may have been an excellent map with a wonderful low-gravity mechanic, but what the fuck was the story to it?

That part I mentioned before: "One picture somewhere would apparently link to a scenario hinted at in Map B, which is confirmed by a poster from World at War and if you bake that in headcanon for a day and post it on the internet you create the ultimate way to piss Evonisia off."

It sums up the Five Nights at Freddy's community entirely. Have you tried reading the Wiki? All I wanted to know was the actions of Bonnie the Bunny and I'm assaulted by how Bonnie is really this, or the ever infamous "Foxy is a good guy" speculation. Five Nights at Freddy's has a very interesting story, I will totally grant you, but the games themselves present it horribly, which leads to this over active hive of speculation and madness that can't help but drill into my skull. The Silent Hill games knew how to do symbolism and foreshadowing through imagery, I don't know what FNaF is trying to do by comparison.

As for the best community? I actually think that the Zombies community pre-Black Ops was pretty damn awesome. It was mostly about helping each over, figuring out cool secrets in the maps or good camping specs to hide out at, whether the Ray Gun or the Wunderwaffe was more awesome (forever team Wunderwaffe senpai <3 <3). Kids weren't all that common back in World at War days, kinda like with Halo 3 weirdly enough, though Halo 3 had a very hit-and-miss community in general. The Halo Fanon community was pretty awesome as well, but I'm not sure if they count under "gaming" communities as it concerned the management of fan fiction, not the games.

I think I'll be third to nominate the Destiny subforums on Bungie's site as the worst gaming community. I really don't understand why the people over there will defend anything Bungie does. Even suggesting small convenience changes like Raid Matchmaking gets hundreds of "kill urself" comments.

Best community...well, there was the MMO I used to play called 9Dragons that had a pretty great community, most of the high level players would help out newbies a lot, give them gold, equipment, help them complete quests and decide on their build. It was pretty cool. The community really made that horribly grindy game a better experience than it ever could have been on its own. I really wish I could just take that community with me to every social game I play.

Some of the worst I've come across are Smash and Destiny communities. Nintendo and particularly Sega are unbearable.

This community has been really good, Street Fighter are cool (i dont even play but i watch cause of it)

people that play Driveclub are generally cool too.

I can't pick out a worst community, but I'd put KSP's online community as one of the best. Just have a peruse of r/kerbalspaceprogram and you'd hard pressed to find any asshats or trolls. Plus it's one of the most welcoming and open communities for new players, especially for a game with such a steep learning curve. You'll frequently see people's first Mun landings or first orbits getting positive feedback.

Another vote for the Sony fanbase, not only because they're the most numerous gaming fanbase and most immune to criticism but also in the way a certain popular ban happy gaming forum last year acted like it was a branch of Sony PR spread FUD for the competition while deflecting any criticism for Sony. That said I'm glad more ppl are atm finally being more critical of the PS4 putting all consoles on a more even setting.

Best
While it was 5 years ago since I quit the game, my time with the Eve Online community is some of the best time I've had in gaming, due to the slower and more cerebral gameplay and high difficulty curve and death penalty made for a much more mature playerbase than what the norm in gaming.

The best gaming community I've ever come across is 3.5 edition D&D. A build for every character concept, and a character concept for every build.

...what?

I think the worst gaming community I have ever been a part of was an Indie MMO called "Darkfall Online" it was a full loot always on PvP game focused on sieging clan holds, it was also skill-based like The Elder Scrolls instead of using strict levels. The people in the community were very harsh with each other, sometimes in-game politics would arise from some random forum comment where a guild leader decided to attack someone else. There were in-game thieves who would use trickery like faking alt characters of officers to get access to clan vaults and rob people blind, and there was a constant elitism regarding people's builds and how terrible other players were.

The game itself was fun though...

By far the absolute best community I've been in is the Baldur's Gate community, specifically the Beamdog enhanced editions. The people there are always helpful, I've never been talked down to for asking questions, and doing unique playthroughs is actually encouraged and actively discussed in a mature way.

For worst I would have to say the Atlus for worst gaming community, combine casual elitism and mix it with some overblown fanboyism and you have a really obnoxious community. To elaborate Atlus fanboys tend to shout to the rooftops about them being some sort of messiah of JRPGs and yell at anyone who criticizes any of the games to "go back to Final Fantasy" which they look down upon rather smugly. The other obnoxious aspect is the fact that Atlus is supposed to be "immune to criticism" and anyone who does will be shouted down, a good example of this most recently is Atlus has started charging more for there 3DS games that anyone else whilst having a fanbase who will not only buy it at said price but yell at anyone who criticizes said price. That is not even getting into the whole treatment of Europe and both the gaming press and Atlus fanboys lack of caring, though Atlus fanboys will stubbornly defend them for it ... but I have ranted on this point too many times already.

For best I would have to say the Disgaea community, a pretty chill community aside from the same two or three fanbase disputes. Given what the Disgaea series is like you would expect it to have a pretty elitist fanbase which surprisingly it does not and is rather insightful as well as helpful. A good example of this is how the community treats newcomers which is full of pretty helpful guides and regulars who will answer questions (although they will get annoyed if a user floods multiple questions across 3 or so topics). One last good example of the community being great is the Disgaea 4 community producing what was dubbed "Sycbots" which is a unit other players could find online and capture it to recruit a unit with maxed out aptitudes and all legendary weapon skills, which greatly removed the stress of hunting the damn skills. The worst I have ever seen the community is one big divide which stems down to two smaller issues, in essence the divide starts at Disgaea 1/2 system VS Disgaea3/4 system and then branches off into arguments about RNG being the straw that broke the camels back or it bringing challenge ect... this then branches off into the bigger point of contention being duping, though this is pretty much just the really hardcore of the community.
