Sten from Dragon Age Origins. Early in the game, I decided to take him along on a trip to Denerim, and get ambushed on the way. The first fight he's in, and Sten goes down pretty much immediately. When I finally get to Denerim, he starts going on about how I'm a rubbish Grey Warden. I wish I'd left him in the cage for the Darkspawn.
This is pretty much exactly the same kind of thing that happens when I decide that I want to gear up my 3 main companions (Alistair, Wynne and Leliana) and then completely ignore the rest of them. In my 3 or 4 playthroughs of Origins, I don't think that I have ever put Sten, Zevran, Oghren, or the Dog in my active party by choice. As a result, when it came to the "DEFEND DENERIM FROM THE DARKSPAWN!" quest, and you were forced to play as the characters that you had left behind, they were super low leveled, and had very little in the form of good gear. Oh the look on my face must've been astounding.
The level of the companion is scaled to your character level, one level below your character level I believe.

Do note that I haven't beaten DA:O even till now, I went though all the story and side stuff up until the recruitment of Logan. (and I did it three times, I may add) I can only tell this by look at my party equip when I try to equip some of the companion I don't use often with left over junk loots I picked up.
Yeah, I think I ended up spending more time in the menu spending skill points than I did actually fighting. Next time around though, everybody got the hand me down gear.

Corso Riggs from SWTOR. He hit on me and I tortured him for it. Kissing every dude that would let me.

Carth

Quit whining you little *****. I don't care about your tragic history and why you have trust issues, just shut up already! I can't even kill you, you just run off like the little wuss you are!

Kaiden

Well, you have the same voice actor as Carth, you started off already bad. Add to that you were just plain boring. Nobody liked talking to you Kaiden so that's why you were disintegrated with the nuke on Virmire.

Jacob

You were boring and sounded dumb.

Zevran

I don't trust this dude. You talk all polite but it comes off like an act and you'll backstab me any chance you get. Add to the fact that you always flirt with me even though I don't bend that way. Should have killed you on the battlefield.

I've only played Jade Empire once and I pretty much kept the same party members throughout. Didn't really talk to them much. I haven't played Dragon Age 2 or Bulders Gate so I can't comment on them. I didn't have any issues with ME3 or most of ME2 party members though so I say Mass Effect has the best companions.

I even hated Alistair. I've got the feeling he was supposed to be the funny one, but I don't know on what planet he would be considered funny. Smarmy git.

Alistair is not supposed to be funny: he's supposed to be a very insecure lad who hides his crippling anxieties behind a facade of cheap jokes.
But he doesn't give off the demeanour of an insecure lad.

He just gives off the demeanour of some non-committed arse, reciting a manuscript.

Agreed with the OP's post. Except I hate Kaidan more, at least I can kill him off in the first game though.

Samara just leaves me more or less impartial, as did Vega and Jacob.

In KOTOR I didn't really dislike any of the characters to be honest. It just took a while to get into the story of some of them, like Jolee Bindo.

In Jade Empire most of the characters left me more of less impartial, except the girl with the demon (don't remember the name), liked her.

..

Overall, I don't really *hate* any of their characters because I could usually just leave them out of my party if they didn't interest me much.

The only one I really disliked was Anders in DA2. Because I needed him through much of my playthrough and because he was just such a boring drab compared to his appearance in Awakening.

I almost never use Kaidan or Ashley when I play. Kaidan just seems really....dull and Ashely kind of annoys me. The low grade racism is only part of it, frankly. (which is why I usually let her die when given the choice). I usually use Liara, Wrex or Tali for the missons and let the humans babysit the Normandy.
I'd be the same. Kaidan never has anything interesting to say or contribute, and Ashley seems to just be there to second-guess every decision I make so long as it involves trusting any non-human even slightly. When it came to Virmire, it was a difficult choice but not for the intended reason; "Aww, I can only get rid of one of them?"

OT: I didn't know Jack was so unpopular - I thought she was hilarious (seriously, bring her on Mirandas loyalty mission), and she has an good backstory.

I'm personally not a fan of James Vega in the least. He's just annoying - he never seems to have much banter with any of the rest of the crew, except him trying to out-cool Garrus once which was a plan doomed to fail. It's hard to tell whether I'd take Kaidan over him - I mean, Kaidan has all the charisma of a cardboard cutout of himself but I dont actively dislike him.

Me neither, she was one of my favorite characters in Mass Effect and really the only reason i would consider putting up with male sheps voice acting.

Sten.

Out of 3 playthroughs, I've left him to die in Lothering twice, but my other playthrough was designed so that my main party would consist of the companions I'd mostly ignored first time around. I like talking to companions between missions, but every time I asked Sten a question, his response would be either "yes", or "no". He is just so boring.

I don't like him, and I don't hate him either. Its actually far worse than that - I simply don't care about him at all.

Also, dishonourable mentions for the ME2 versions (they are less annoying in ME3) of
- Jack. Didn't like her "outfit", and her attitude basically screamed "leave me alone", so I did.
- Grunt. Telling everyone you meet that you are pure Krogan does not make you a badass like Wrex.

I think BioWare writes some of the best characters in Western RPG's and some of the reasons people are giving for certain characters to be the "WORST CHARS EVAR" is basically just, "I don't like them for reasons and therefore they're bad". There are plenty of characters that I dislike but I wouldn't call them the worst characters ever. I guess it's to be expected, there's always so much negativity in threads about Bioware games.

KOTOR: I was very very young when I first played KOTOR so my opinions are a bit muddy. I guess I never really clicked with T3-M4 or Jolee Bindo because you recruited him so late in game. I also found Juhani straight up ugly so I never liked her.

Mass Effect: Usually, I rarely dislike a character, just oftentimes a character really won't click with me. For example, Kaidan, Thane, Jack (at first), Legion. Sometimes I would play and I would find myself really liking one of them for a playthrough only to play again and not care about them anymore. For some reason though, I've always disliked EDI as a squad member, maybe it's cuz I dislike robot characters hence me not giving a single fuck when Legion died but damn I just really think EDI is a waste of a squad slot, they definitely should have chosen someone else.

Dragon Age: Same goes for Dragon Age where I rarely straight up dislike characters, but I can't say I've cared much for Wynne or Oghren although I used Oghren more on my most recent playthrough and instead of being a boisterous dumb drunk he seems to also be a tortured character, and that's a depth I'd never seen before,, and I appreciate. I've never liked Fenris because he's just so Final Fantasy and I don't wanna sound like an MRA but he REEEEALLY seemed to be blatantly pandering to the female fans of DA and he just seems so out of place in the game, I dunno, call me crazy.

On the first page, I saw a lot of people not liking DA2's Merril.

I'm sorry, but I really couldn't bring myself to be mean to her. She's endearing to me, mostly because of Eve Myles's Welsh accent. Merril is foolish and naive, and is single-mindedly pursuing a self-destructive path and making deals with demons. Normally, I'm not very good at liking characters whose actions fly in the face of logic (Vash the Stampede is one notable example).

But it was probably her voicework that kept me from hating her.

Anyways, Anders is an asshole, James Vega got on my nerves ("Hey guys, have I mentioned I'm Hispanic today? Let me throw in some Spanish for no good reason!), Kaidan is boring, and even though Fenris has a sexy, sexy voice (I wish Gideon Emery did more work, he's brilliant), he's almost as big an asshole as Anders.

I also don't really care for Jacob Taylor, for the same reason I didn't care for Kaidan. He's just boring.
