We had a recent virus outbreak at my work, and it's turning out to be a real pain in the ass.

We nicknamed it the 'Computer AIDS', since it spreads through thumbdrives and it disables your antivirus software.

Yeah, I know. I'm going to Hell for that one.

Anyway, my AV software was up-to-date enough to catch the virus on my home computer, but when it tried to remove the virus it wound up corrupting the registry (don't ask me how) and I had to reinstall windows.

I've had pretty good luck with viruses over the years and this my worst virus story that I can remember, but I know it's nowhere near as bad as some people's virus encounters. So what's your worst virus story, Escapist?

NOTE: To anybody who plans to say something like "I use Linux/Mac, so I don't get viruses! DURR HURR! SERVES YOU RIGHT, STUPID WINDOWS-USING PISSIANTS!", we all understand that your operating systems are so unpopular that hackers don't consider them worthy targets. However, some of us actually like playing games on our computers, so please don't troll.

Blatant ignorance and/or trolling aside, worst virus I've ever had was one which essentially stopped me from connecting to the internet...fun times. other than that just crappy standard ones.

Last count we had about 200 and something viruses. Only reason the computer's still alive is because the buggers are too busy going at each other.

There was the one my mate got where it would randomly download porn and bring up media player. That was not good.
I hope the reason it wasn't good was because it was bestiality (or some other sick practice) , because a 'virus' that downloads porn for you sounds like my kind of disease (lulz, awful pun).

What did you do to it?.....no wait I don't want to know.
What he did to it seems fairly obvious. What I want to know is how the Mac got Herpes in the first place. Dirty little things they are...

Edit: Damn! Double post...
This is indeed a disturbing universe. I'm scared now *hides*
Now now... There's nothing to be afraid of... Remember, this is the Internet. You only need to come to terms with what it really is. Afterwards you will be fine (or completely insane, but let's not dwell on that.) So you just have to start visiting the unmentionable dark corners of the Internet (viewer discretion advised,) and soon nothing will disturb you (or everything.)

That was a very evil virus. It wasn't even made for personal gain *gasp!*, just sadistic pleasure. On the other hand... Maybe it was trying to protect you (see the post and quotes earlier in the post.)

in Win95 my dad sent his PC to get some service (dont remember what for) and a month later a worm (you heard me right, a WORM) started eating the screen, kind of a screen saver, but my dad got locked out of the pc and rebooting did nothing, we didn´t knew english and knew less about computers

so he sent it again to the repair shop, they charged him and sent the pc back

one month later it happened again

it happened in total 3 months in a row, untill my dad got a hold of a computer expert who opened the registry and found a scheduled program to run every month in the same date at the same time, the damn guy he sent the PC first installed it on purpose to have us go back to him every month

weird huh??

also, i managed to get a hold of a virus in a floppy (yeah obsolete stuff) that corrupted all the files in any PC that it got installed, i got it off a friend´s house and installed it in all the computers in my school *diabolic grin*
I read "a virus in a floppy (yeah obsolete stuff) that corrupted all the files in any PC that it got installed" and the first thing I though was to kill my school's computer system with it.

Then I read the last line. lol

Sorry but that's awesome. congratulates to the person who made that, even though it would be immensely annoying.

Hmmmm I remember 3 ocasions...

the first was when I was a kid using windows 3.1, one day all of my hardrive was eaten up, thanks to the NATAS virus (read it backwards for full effect). Someone had to come over to my house to delete that thing... I still remember that the virus made more than 1000 copies of itself.

The second virus was a strange case, back then when everyone used P2P, the damn thing would screw image files (.jpg) copying himself as well while jumping from folder to folder, I had to delete all the infected images to get rid of it.

And Lastly one of my cousins installed a 'Free Antivirus' that you couldn't uninstall nor browse the internet without buying it... I had to turn of all the registers and delete it manually...

Pain in the ass... all of them

Ha, I remember this virus I had once. I posted it on another forum already so I'm copy pasting it over here (with slight improvements in grammar and spelling).

Hmm, that sound like a virus I got some time ago. It opened up a antivirus website and displayed varnings at the small icons in the down right corner of the screen. The virus was quite funny, it changed the desktop background completely black except for a 480x320 big flashing screen where it said something along the lines of "your computer have been infected cleaning it up with a antivirus program is recommended". Ctrl alt del was "oddly" enough not working and was showing an error message, and you could not change back the desktop background either.

Now here is the best part; the name of the antivirus program? "Real antivirus" of course.

That was the wierdest virus I've ever seen, and after that I improved the safety of IE (disabling direct x, java and flash programs etc.).

Worst one was actually quite recent. It was a Trojan downloader if i remember correctly. It downloaded more viruses, i tried to get it away with any means possible. A while later i realize it was not on my computer but on my external hard drive. Until that point it had killed about 5 computers and had spread to one of my friends internet company, which threatened my friend that they needed to fix the problem or they would not receive anymore connection from them. This all got solved eventually, but it was the worst I have ever seen.

Mcaffe smit fraud.

Ugh. Every two fucking seconds, a giant banner would come across the screen, "Hey!! Did you know your subscription to McAffe security expired?" No it didn't, ************. I never subscribed to you!!!

Then, I would get a bunch of other things saying "Your computer is at risk of infection!!!" Then, it would instantly start doing a bullshit scan and wouldn't let me leave the site.

The worst was when my computer would start playing random comercials. I'd start hearing acne medication, drain-o comercials, and some wierd british news cast without the internet even being on.

Only thing I got was "AntiVirus System Pro". Got rid of it within a half-hour. Kinda exciting, fighting your first real virus.
