Everybody here is hyped up on the number of death. id be more concerned on the actual atrocity. The vikings created the worst torture / death in history (the bloody eagle) which ill describe in another thread. Alternatively Vlad impaled half of his own army and posted them in front of his own abode, to scare off others. I'm not quite sure on who the worst would be considering it changes via perspective on peoples own values on human life.
Vlad the Impaler as people call him, is one of Romania's greatest heroes because he single handedly protected the country against the immense Turkish Empire. Most of the impaling was applied to the turkish soldiers and bulgarians, not so much on his own people as most of you say (only on traitors and such).
He is also in the "Top 100 Greatest Romanian Personalities" , so the impaling his own people and Dracula stories are all a bunch of crap.
Impaling was horrible, I'll give you that

Stalin's got nothing on Genghis Khan for deaths-to-people ratio. The Mongols wiped out every village from Mongolia to Hungary, fercrissakes! The only reason they didn't kill people in numbers like Stalin and Mao is because in the 13th century there weren't that many people to go around.
I think he was too busy raping, pillaging and murdering to be a dictator.
That's what made him so great. He didn't sit around some palace somewhere and let others do his dirty work for him. That sumbitch got shit done.
Stalin robbed mother fucking banks. He got shit done.

Indeed, imagine Hitler taking up a MP-40, wielding the swastika flag while storming ahead his troops, raping every female he comes across. That's Khan for you.

Anyway, I think I'll go for Stalin. His Soviet Russia was pretty much the Imperial Guard of our world, killed tens of millions out of sheer paranoia, crippled his own military by purging it, not to mention the horrible plan economy. Mao comes second, Hitler third.

And if banks had been invented in 13th-century Eastern Slavic and steppe territories, Genghis would've robbed them too. Unfortunately, since Slavs and steppe peoples didn't have banks or money or financial instruments for the Mongols to steal, Genghis had to make do with building pyramids of human skulls.

Now, had the Mongols showed up in 15th-century Italy when the foundations of modern banking were being invented? Oh, you bet your ass the horde would've said "you're writing us a no-redemption-required bill of credit for all your shit, right?"

idk im gonna have to go with Hitler (btw I cant pull the exact millions off the top off my head but if you want to go off body count it was Mao, Stalin, then Hitler) because his impact on cultures all over Europe is imply massive, from London streets that are still in rubble to the mass graves outside Leningrad (St. Petersburg)and the unforgettable cattle trains and gas chambers of Auschwitz. Of course im probably horribly biased because I am Jewish and I also have to confess ignorance to the extent of damage Mao did during the Cultural Revolution.

Fair point, but Stalin wasn't exactly sitting around his entire life.
Though, and this admittedly on limited knowledge on 13th century european history, do the Mongols really count as dictators? They sound more like an invading army and an imperial power than a dictatorship.
My vote's still with Mao anyways.

What Genghis said, went. That's good enough for "dictator" by my standard. Your mileage may vary.

The question is simple, the answer somewhat harder: Who was/is the worst dictator in human history? Hitler for the holocaust? Stalin for the gulags? Pol Pot for the killing fields? Or an ancient dictator like Vlad the impaler or Genghis Khan?

I myself tend to go with Stalin, as the most people died under his regime in modern history.
I think you'll find Mao killed more with his "great leap forward".

True, but the population of China is about three times as large. That's why I think stalin was worse, as he killed about 10-15% of his entire population.

Not really a dictator, but Franz Joseph I. If he'd just taken the assassination of his son on the chin and not declared war, WW1, the Treaty of Versailles, WW2, the Berlin Wall etc. might have been delayed or prevented altogether

Please be sarcasm. PLEASE.

Worst dictator in history? That would be Stalin. Butchering his own people, the Berlin Wall, abandoning Marxism to make up his own rules that only benefited him and his regime... yup. That's more than worthy of the Worst Dictator Evarr title.

Stalin did all this in what 20 years think how much worse Hitler would have been if he had another 15 years.

Regardless, I chalk one up to Mao.

Or if we're playing Civilizations, Ghandi.
Ghandi attacked me first. You bet I'm nuking him.

On-topic, hard to say. It's a three-way tie between Stalin, Mousy Dung, and Pol Pot for me.
