Tommy Lee Jone's character expresses that whoever the bad guy was had destroyed his view of a good and clean world. So he retired. Because he was afraid of death.
It was a very human and realistic ending.
It was a very hard ending to understand, because you have to think back to the start of the film and remember that monologue.
Also, best ending of all time for TV shows - tie between The Sopranos and Six Feet Deep. Both blew my fucking mind apart.
Worst ending movie: Inception. I mean who actually gave enough of a fuck about DiCaprio's character to care what his fate was...
