Borderlands and Hellgate London were equally disappointing, they were both shooters mashed up with Diablo. Within the RPG genre, Diablo style games have largely gone out of fashion too, and for a good reason: the draw of endless loot and xp grinding really isn't that great if no one gives a fluff about the story or the characters. Seriously, in both Borderlands and Hellgate, there was absolutely no motivation to keep on playing, I lost interest in both once I realized the story wasn't going to get more engaging.
Fallout 3 gets called an RPG. It's just a shooter with a few meaningless stats and only one moral choice that actually means anything. Same with Oblivion. Fallout 1 and 2 are RPGs, Morrowind is an RPG, but Fallout 3 and Oblivion are not.
Oh and Mass Effect. That was a shooter with force powers and like three skill trees.
I agree with Bioshock too. The early PC version was to have stat stations where you could improve things like your gun weilding ability or your melee attack, you could create tonics which increased your speed or whatever for a short time, you used complex uprgrade trees to gain your plasmids. Pretty much like System Shock.
Then it went to consoles.....

Xykon is indeed awesome. OotS really needs to get the storyline back to him, the last 2 strips have been of his minions, so I'm hopeful we'll see him again soon.CrysisMcGee said:
Amen to that. Loved the original despite the fact that it shared in some of the reason I hated the second one... It all struck me when I unloaded 4 or 5 grenades into some cyborg/armored dude's head and he turns around and waxes me with his peashooter... that's gameplay balancing at its worst, sure it adds challenge, but it certainly didn't make me feel like the badass you're supposed to be. How about making each bad guy easier to take down and flood the area with more of them instead, y'know?loves2spooge said:
As far as the actual point of this thread goes, I'd have to say Deus Ex 1 & 2 did seem squarely in the thick of the RPG/FPS genre, I would not question that about it.
I hated that Riddick game? Assault on Dark Athena? The parts that incorporated RPG into it, although, the punch up's in the prison were pretty cool...
