The main character not talking was definitely not unique to Half-Life. Games had that way before HL did. The reasons for it are right though; thats generally why developers have whoever your playing not speak or sometimes not even be seen in some games. In order to make you feel more "in the game" Valve has given him no dialogue or personality. What you get out of the game is not filtered through the characters personality, opinions, or thoughts. It is just you, and makes it a very unique experience.
OT: I have to say Tingle. I used to think Navi was annoying but god did he take the cake.
