Oh, in that case. The current war in Afghanistan. History has proved, that you will never, ever defeat the Afghanis (Or the Irish, Finnish or Vietnamese) so why even fucking try?
No one has ever defeat the irish?

awkward
Let me rephrase that for him.

No one has ever defeated the Irish.
That's only because Chuck Norris is part-Irish.

Battle of Dieppe. It was a disaster for Canadians. Not exactly the worst Military loss in History, but definitely the worst that springs to my mind, the soldiers who fought in that battle were pretty much sacrificial lambs.

We all know the Austrialians never recovered from the Emu War [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emu_war] in 1932. To quote Wikipedia

The machine-gunners' dreams of point blank fire into serried masses of Emus were soon dissipated. The Emu command had evidently ordered guerrilla tactics, and its unwieldy army soon split up into innumerable small units that made use of the military equipment uneconomic. A crestfallen field force therefore withdrew from the combat area after about a month. After the withdrawal of the military, the emu attacks on crops continued.
Smart Emu's indeed.

Seriously though, Finland whooping Russia gets my vote.

Agencourt (cant spell in french)?
Agincourt so you know.

Anyway, I'm quite disappointed by the lack of mention of Gettysburg. That battle turned the tide of the war, and not to mention it being the bloodiest 3 days in American history...

I'm talking about long term, rather than individual battles. We're free now aren't we? Only Northern Ireland left. Give it 100 years.
Yeah fair enough. But to be honest you can really rank ireland with the Afghans. Those boys have thrown down through-out history and continually won.

Finland was bad for the USSR but the Eastern front of WWII was even worse.

Ouch. 20 million lives lost, but maybe if Stalin hadn't made a deal with Hitler to carve up Poland then maybe the Second World War would never have started in the first place...
You do realise that the Second World War started because of the invasion of Poland, right? It's not like the deal made much of a difference, it just sped up the process a little by reducing the amount of land Germany had to take to get to Russia's borders.

That seems like the greatest battle of all time.

Galipoli was a pretty big fail during WWI, got Churchill backbenched for quite some time. Probably not the worst military loss, perhaps Teutorburg or Chancellorville.

The Crusades. Over 100 years of war and for what? A couple of scraps of land that they lost anyway.

Yes, but it WAS a rather epic loss. besides, it's opinions remember.
I'm sorry, I wasn't aware this was a thread about opinions, I thought this was a thread about flapping your dong around and dancing merrily, I was quite worried that someone might misinterpret me pointing out in my own honest opinion that I believe Stalingrad was a greater loss than a cavalry charge as an opinion! Sure got lucky there, eh?

Trafalgar. The battle which guaranteed Empire and more or less defined the shape of the modern world. And the reason that we all speak English instead of French. Apparently Napoleon got so pissed off at the performance of his naval personnel that to this day, French Navy captains are not allowed the suffix "Mon", i.e. you don't say "Mon Capitaine" leading to the expression, "En la Marine c'est "mon Dieu" et "mon cul", mait ne pas mon Capitaine!"

Translation: "In the Navy there is "my God" and "my arse" but not "my Captain"."

Runner up is Salamis. It more or less, along with Platea guaranteed the ascendancy of the Greeks, the decline of the Persian Empire and, by extension, the supremacy of Western Civilization as we know it. Even worse was that Xerxes had on his side guys like the Phoenicians, who more or less invented the art of naval warfare and sailing. It got so bad that Artemisia of Cannae, a female naval commander fighting for Xerxes, rammed one of her own ships in a bid to deceive a Greek ship bearing down on her. This prompted Xerxes, who mistakenly thought she had rammed a Greek ship to say "My women have become men and my men have all become women!"

Yeah I'm Navy.

GO NAVY!

I'm going to have to say that one of the worst losses in a single battle would have been by the British to the Zulu in 1879. Apparently an entire British Regiment went to go beat up some Zulu tribesmen and got wiped out. The battle was such a disaster for the British that the battle wasn't even named.

http://www.logoi.com/notes/zulu_victory_over_british_troops.html

... and then the British go on to thoroughly destroy the Zulu for years to come.

No one's mentioned The Battle of New Orleans yet. Probably one of the battles that most put the British to shame.
