Hey all, so I'm looking to torture myself and test my patience. Basically I'd like to hear what you think are the worst RPG's in existence and I'm gonna give them a try. We're talking over-powered bosses, hours upon hours of grinding or seeking "that" item, unbalanced party systems, etc.

The catch is they have to be retro. I'm looking for anything on the N64 or older. None of this "Enchanted Arms" or "The last Remnant" crap.

Old-school, unfair, and downright HARD RPG's to beat. Lay it on me and tell me why it's such a horrible game or why you quit playing/didn't even bother.

BEGIN!

Eternal Sonata and Planescape.

The first was eternally (get it?) boring and did nothing to draw me into the story. The second was faaaar to alien to be comfortable in.

But this is, of course, al imho.

Easy: Rogue-likes. I wouldn't say they're bad RPGs at all, in fact some of the best RPGs I've played are Rogue-likes. But this genre of games all have one feature in common: automatically deleting save files. You can only save when you close the game down, and when you reload that save it is immediately deleted meaning that if you die in a Rogue-like game you have to start from square one, level one. Every time. If you're looking for many, many, many rage-inducing moments and self inflicted agony then look no further than Rogue-likes.

KotOR . . . but on xbox. It's one of the best games ever on PC, and then with that freakin' controller that xbox has it turns into a mess.

"Lunar: Dragon Song" on the DS. You can't even tell your party which enemy to attack! So you'll end up in situations where your strong main character will overkill a dying enemy by a large amount, when your healer girl could have easily finished it off and allowed the main guy to get a start on the next enemy!

That and you LOSE HEALTH WHILE RUNNING. So your choices are either "walk at a snail's pace and get bored out of your mind" or "constantly use up your health and get screwed for the combat". >_<

I managed to go through about 3 hours of that game before finally throwing it down with disgust. Hell, even that terrible sonic RPG was better than this game, and that says a lot!

Two Worlds is the first one that springs to mind. All the more surprising that Two Worlds 2 is quite good.

i'd go with Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage...
That! A thousand times that! Can't remember how many times I thought, "You know what? I'll give it another try," only to be beaten down again by crappy controls, a total lack of tutorial, and a difficulty/learning curve as steep as K2. My only healer got killed by rats and my tank by baby bats? Ok, that's cool *breaks cart*

This. I see worst and RPG put together in a sentence and Two Worlds comes to mind pretty much instantly. I have yet to play the second one, but the first one kind of made me never want to do that; despite the second's fairly good reviews.

I also never want to hear the "word" mayhap ever again.

i'd go with Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage or quest 64,both of the had lot's of potential but where at the end of the simply horrendous.
I'd have to massively disagree with you there, while Aidyn did have a large number of flaws I still thought it was a good game, yes it looked so bad you wanted to claw your eyes out, yes it was very slow going yes it got repetative and had balance issues but sorry almost forgot which side i was on there :p but it had an interesting combat system that I would like to see tried again just more polished and was massive and with a more interesting/orginal story than most rpgs from what i remember.

Ahahaha you're funny
Says the guy who rattles off the likes of Fallout and Final Fantasy. I'm dying over here.
Actually all those games I listed ARE pretty terrible. FF8 especially is CERTAINLY one of the worst RPGs ever created. Fallout 3 is probably the best of the lot, merely being a mediocre loot and shoot instead of terrible, but it falls so far short of actually being a Fallout game it doesn't matter. Also ME2 has Mordin.

The worst RPG though is Lightning Warrior Raidy, not that anyone who plays it should be shocked.

Defend FF8. Go on, I'm curious as to what possible argument you could have for it. Or DA2 and FFX for that matter. F3 and ME2 I can sort of see if you just want to shoot things (though they're still terribly written).
