Also ME2 has Mordin.
And how is that a bad thing exactly? Mordin is awesome.

OT: I've honestly never played a retro RPG that I hated. The only thing that comes to mind would be Final Fantasy X-2 for the PS2. I hated that game so much.
I was listing Mordin as a positive point. ME2 is mostly just a shitty corridor shooter, but Mordin is cool.

Well, I won't call them bad games but some of the older Fire Emblem games can be pretty brutal. Once a character dies, they're permanently dead meaning that one careless move can get rid of hours of work. And it autosaves every time you make a move so there's no going back. They're not unfair most of the time, they simply punish carelessness. Extremely.
Isn't that pretty much all the Fire Emblems though? I love playing through them for the strategy though I have yet to beat any of the ones I've played.
Yes, that's true of all of them but the newest one had a feature that let you save anytime which was a godsend for a lot of people. Since the OP was asking for older games I figured I'd mention the GBA ones.

Popularity is not a measure of quality, nor will it ever be, unless you'd like to praise the Bayformers and Twilight films.
Different medias you're working with, that example is fairly invalid. A game has to function well and keep the player's attention over several hours, movies just need to be flashy for an hour and a half to sell well. So the fact that so many people like them is a bit more of an argument than in the movie business.

Calling those games bad is more or less just hating the fact that people DO like them. People enjoy the games. Games are meant to entertain, if they're entertaining in the ways intended, then I'd say they're probably successes. Let's look at the context of your argument:
You came into a thread, where a person was asking for a mechanically broken, old RPG. Instead, you list off several newer(with the exception of FF8), mechanically sound RPGs. Way to go. Plus, you've given exactly zero examples of how they're bad. They all have their flaws I'm suuure you could comb out and pick through, as none of them are by any means perfect. The fact is though, none of them are gamebreaking.

Dragon Warrior for the NES. It's not that hard if you grind, but the combat is the most basic you'll find in any RPG (like final fantasy but with only one character and one enemy), and there's nothing else to the game at all.

You heard it here folks: Modern Warfare 2 is the greatest game of all time.

So a lot of people didn't read the retro bit in the original post, huh?

OT: Probably Breath of Fire II.

I love the story to bits, but the encounter rate was ridiculously high, the original translation was AWFUL, and the 'run' option was really just a formality, or possibly a 'waste turn' button.

But the really, really worst bit? When you try to run and fail, it doesn't say 'can't run', it says 'Won't run'. The party members aren't even listening to me? Why am I fucking here then!?

"Lunar: Dragon Song" on the DS. You can't even tell your party which enemy to attack! So you'll end up in situations where your strong main character will overkill a dying enemy by a large amount, when your healer girl could have easily finished it off and allowed the main guy to get a start on the next enemy!

That and you LOSE HEALTH WHILE RUNNING. So your choices are either "walk at a snail's pace and get bored out of your mind" or "constantly use up your health and get screwed for the combat". >_<

I managed to go through about 3 hours of that game before finally throwing it down with disgust. Hell, even that terrible sonic RPG was better than this game, and that says a lot!
That's not even the worst part. Try having to choose between earning Exp or getting items to sell for cash, effectively doubling the amount of grinding required, as well as enemies that'll constantly steal or destroy your equipment.

That game is basically the definition of pain.

Singularity.

It's a pointless RPG tied up in a boring shooter.

Other than that I haven't really played any "bad" RPG's.

Dragon Age 2 wasn't good by any stretch but it wasn't the worst by any stretch either.

Funny, don't recall ever saying that. So...avoid the good points I'm making and put words in my mouth? That's honestly the best you can counter with? I never said the games were perfect, and I was giving a general guideline, not a strict law. And guess what, MW2 was good. It was a clone, but it was still functionally sound, and at least somewhat entertaining if you're into the FPS genre. As said before though, it was a clone of it's far superior predecessor. As far as I'm concerned you've thrown your own argument into the ground and moped right down next to it because you can't come up with 1 decent non-sarcastic point. I refuse to take part in this increasingly unrelated discussion in this thread any longer. If you'd like to make any more pathetically meek attempts at trolling, I'll be waiting in PMs. Good day to you.

OP said HARD games. Mystic Quest is one of the easiest RPGs ever.

...also I kinda liked it. It got me playing RPGs in the first place by being easy to get into.

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Lance for the NES.

You won't find a worse one. I promise you.
Christ, did they release that on the NES? I remember playing HotL on my ZX Spectrum, and if a Spectrum could handle it I doubt it exactly pushed the limits of the NES.

Oh blah. The thread title uses worst and in my opinion that game totally is. I started with Super Mario RPG. I've yet to play a Mario RPG that I like nearly as much as that one.

Yeah, I found out about that after I put it down. I didn't even realize it, nor could I figure out how to do it once I knew.

Really, screw that game. It's like the developers TRIED to make the worst RPG ever.

My vote goes to "Holy Magic Century" on the N64... This "does" count as an RPG, right?

Well, I consider it ambiguously and personally bad, if that makes any sense. I don't think it was a horribly made game, however, no. Just bad for me and the style of games I enjoy.
Well, no, that doesn't really make sense. Personal taste is something entirely different from quality. They can be casually related, as in someone who would only likes things of a certain quality, but are by no means the same. Planescape is not of your taste, fair enough, but that doesn't make it bad. I can't stand FIFA either, but I'll never say it's bad. I just don't like football.

By far the worst rpg is Last Remnant by Square Enix. You level by how many battles you fight and how powerful the enemies were and not exp.. So far not bad but here's the problem enemies level with you and with most items having a less than 2% drop rate on items to make better weapons you start to see the problem by the time you get the weapons to fight an enemy its uber strong. Its an rpg with an mmo drop rate.

Most certainly the tabletop game FATAL.

Sexism is built into the core gameplay mechanics.
Character generation requires a d1,000,000.
You have to work out orifice sizes during character generation.
Its possible for your asshole to have a negative diameter.
Combat requires trigonometry.

There is nothing on this planet which is as poorly designed as FATAL.

Give Tales of Phantasia a try. It is an old-school game that's different enough to be interesting, but tends to suffer the retro game symptoms of unfair bosses, grinding, and obscure objectives.
