Them's some nice opinions you got there, pardner. /tips hat
Defend FF8. Go on, I'm curious as to what possible argument you could have for it. Or DA2 and FFX for that matter. F3 and ME2 I can sort of see if you just want to shoot things (though they're still terribly written).
FFX had the best story in the series. Combat was superb (2nd best in series), and the side-quests were fun, with Bliztball being the 2nd best side quest game (Triple Triad from FF8 being better). The characters had real depth, outside of Tidus, and the music, like just about anything Uematsu has ever done, is terrific. Sphere Grid was a fun level-up mechanic, which could have been done better, but better than the standard "Level Up, gain new ability" problems that so many RPGs have. It won Game of the Year for a reason, but I'm guessing you saw the ever famous "laugh" video on 4chan, and immediately thought the game was crap.
FF8 had 3rd best side quests, the best mini-game (Triple Triad) and the Junction System, while incredibly flawed, was inventive if nothing else. Combat was passable, the Junction System killed it. The characters were relatable, outside the human ball of angst that was Squall. Man, Final Fantasy main characters generally suck. I think that's why FFXII didn't have one. This was the weakest of the PS1 Final Fantasies, but not a TERRIBLE game.
