Worst Scam Attempt Experiances

As a frequent player of Runescape I, like any MMO player, have to be on the look out for scammers. The developers always try to make you aware of the oldest tricks in the book and common parts of a scam, but nevertheless people will sometimes fall for them. The clever types of scams rely on charm, planning, and a bit of luck, these are not these scams. The scams I am talking about are the ones that had little effort put into them, poorly thought out, or poorly executed. Worse still they try the oldest forms of scamming such as saying "show me you inventory and I'll show you mine" and then hoping that your foolish enough to press the accept button in the trade screen.

I've recently run into one such brain-dead, soon-to-be-banned scammer, who's attempt was so pathetic and poorly thought out it was laughable. As I was acquiring oaks logs to make building supplies he comes up to me and asks "Do you want to be in a video?", I reply saying "For what?". His reply to this is "For a Youtube mix-up", I say "that depends, what is the video about", he answers with a confidence bolstering "IDK". He then tells me that all I need to do is to "pretend" to show him my items, at that point the alarms bells start ringing in my head, the randomness, the poorly thought out responses, and finally asking to see my items in trade. I respond to him saying "Yeah no thanks, reported" and put him on my ignore list. He proceeds to fuck off and I leave to convert my logs to planks.

So how about you? Have you ever encountered such a pathetic attempt to scam you out of your hard earned items? Please share your story, but don't give out names. And if this is against the rules then I ask the mods to please lock the thread.

It isn't an MMO, but it has to mentioned. A few days ago, I saw an ad banner that said

"Step 1: Click this link
Step 2: Go to adverts
Step 3: Download our advert"

Whut.

I remember the whole, armor trimming business Runescape had(s) going on. I've gotten a couple people with that, but I returned everything the moment that they signed back in. It was to show the people I got, how this scam works and how to avoid it, and why it's awful to be caught in.

I've met more than enough scammers playing MapleStory, ConquerOnline, Eudemons and several other MMOs, but the worst one to get caught in is the armor trimming crap.

God Runescape, now there's a blast from the past.

As for dumbest scammers. Anything in WoW. They'd always whisper you about how "u r accunt be banneded if u no go to site and tells us no" or some shit about winning a special mount or beta.

The worst part? There are people who are dumb enough to actually fall for this shit.

Oh god that reminds me of this one time I was playing my ex-member account. Some random player walks up to me and offers to buy me a membership if I give him my account information. I decided to have a bit of fun at his expense. I first asked him why he was doing this, he only response is "you deserve it", I then ask why I "deserved" it, and he really couldn't give me a decent answer. I then decline, he tries to push the issue and then I say the most wonderful thing, reported. He then proceeds to flip the hell out, cursing at me and making claims of vengeance.

It was a good day...

That is actually one of the things that Jagex tells you to watch out for, and also that was pretty risky unless your a mod and can justify it.

People would disagree with my methods, but it isn't until after you personally fall victim, that you really feel the impact these scams have and truly appreciate how awful it is for people to do this sort of thing.

I know it's risky, but I did it anyway, for the reasons I mentioned above. My targets were brand new players, those of very low level, and always tested them to make sure that they weren't experienced players pretending to be newbies. And I couldn't let them know that they'd be getting their items back in the end, because then there's nothing to be scared of, and you can't truly appreciate the fear that players feel when caught in these traps, and are less inclined to help stop these acts, after the fact.

I've had the usual e-mail spam, but nothing really striking.

Though I did get my flying mount in TBC by checking the AH for people putting up cheap items for huge sums (to be bought by gold sellers), and sneaking in an auction from an almost identically-named alt of mine. 1200g for 1x[Linen Cloth], felt like a king.

That was awesome! I'll need to do it to the next scammer that comes calling, no matter if it's computer related or not, I'll just play dumb. Hey, it could work on telemarketers, too!

OT: Well, there were a few in Diablo 2 I've seen, but I'll just mention the funniest one - some dude had a lot of fun with a total newbie teaching him to cheat. And to cheat he had to press Alt + Ctrl + F4, which predictably quit the game instead of whatever that first guy claimed it did. I believe he claimed it gave you money and he threw a 1000 gold on the ground each time or something. In the end, the cheater dude just asked the newbie for his password to show him how it's done. I don't know what happened afterwards, though, presumably they went off in whisper, or the newbie ignored that request I dunno. I was too buys laughing my ass off.

Never really been scammed really...it's ether there too dumb to make it look believable or I just ignore them.

Do the whole 'send this to all friends on your Playstation network list and get a gift card' count?
