For all the people saying Borderlands, I have to disagree on the grounds that not having a story can be better than having an atrocious one. It seemed to me their intent was to have the game populated with characters more memorable for sound bytes than what they contribute to a plot (Hey just like Duke Nukem), which isn't the worst design choice.
This. Borderlands' terrible story is kind of inoffensive in that you can basically ignore it and focus on the "I shoot the mans until they fall down, and sometimes Tannis says funny things" aspect of the game.

Which is why I personally nominate Other M. It's one thing to not have a plot, it's another thing to have a plot that is so actively bad that the mere mention of the game can piss people off :)

Orsino in Dragon Age 2. Everything else in Dragon Age 2 was fine until that very scene, and I was fucking angry at Orsino for doing what he did when I was slaughtering every templar in sight without issue that he supposedly afraid to fight without blood magic.

..And then Meredith's scene happened, and things actually started making sense again. /sigh

Borderlands and Just Cause 2 are two fairly recent games with bad stories.. but never the less they ares till two awesome games.

Of course pretty much any game made before the 90's had a bad story (bar a few exceptions). But thats obviously not fair to criticize a NES/Master System game of having a bad story.
I felt Just Cause was going for a "So Bad It's Good" sort of feel but they somehow failed at... failing. Is that a double negative?

Black Ops Story was actually interesting and enjoyable...
I bet you guys have never really tryed to play black ops only focusing on the singleplayer especially the twist in that story is nice. I know that there are better games out there but I cant stand people that say that the story sucks.
Well your going to hate me, as I played the game only on singleplayer, I hate multiplayer, and I can still say with 100% assurance that COD: Black Ops has a complete stinker of a story.

Yep.

Dude gets confused, dude kills people. Some how during the whole game, not one person wonder why he's talking to thin air, or to ask him about it. Nor does he get any form of debriefing after he's returned from captivity.

That thing was just full of plotholes.
Well I agree the story was sort of laughable but if you actually go replay the missions you start to notice that your companions do say shit like "What the fuck is wrong with you?" whenever you talk to Reznov. Btw I don't see how I was able to shoot Russians with a machine gun while T-bagging a enemy with 2 shotguns in my hands. (Im referring to the fact that everything Reznov does Mason is really doing)
While I enjoyed the story, and was glad they tried to be a little subtle about

Reznov being Mason, I was disappointed that they didn't try hard enough. It became real clear, real fast for me that Reznov wasn't real. I mean, I didn't notice at first, like when Reznov gave me the dossier. But when Reznov only spoke to me, only came around when no one else was here, and didn't do anything that anyone noticed, and then just disappeared every so often, I started thinking something was amiss. By the time I got to the tunnels, It was obvious for me. I'm still wondering if the island infiltration was to show you that you were Reznov, or if the creators actually believed that you still thought Reznov was real at this point.

Not a clue. SO many of them.

I'll just leave this video here (which I am getting far too much use out of). Is it the worst story? Probably not, but it comes close. Is it the best story? Also yes, in some ways.

Okay I have to say Halo...*Ducks the objects being thrown at him by fan boys*

Hear me out... unless I missed something, all of the spartans were killed on Reach. Yet somehow one lone spartan single handedly takes on the entire covenant army and the flood and he wins?
Please correct me if I'm wrong I haven't played Halo: Reach yet, but I think that is a fairly large plot hole.

Mario. An unguarded princess is kidnapped by a turtle/dragon/lizard for reasons unexplained, while a Plumber and his cowardly brother travel over world after world, only to find out the Princess who somehow gets kidnapped every day was in the giant castle surrounded by lava and not the tiny castles.

I love Final Fantasy okay? (Up until 8)

:cough: BUT... I hated the story to 5, I just thought it was dreadfully, mind-numbingly bland. Though admittedly it's possible 6 ruined me on that as I played it first. We all know 6 has the best characters/story/music.

PSHT! Don't argue with me, or I'll get the rolled up newspaper again!

Just play through it until the end, you'll see... I mean it's not a particularly long game. Reach was my first played in the series, honestly I really enjoy the lore of the game much more than even playing 1 thru 3. Give it a shot!

It's been said, but I'm going to throw a vote in for Borderlands, as well; the game itself was definitely good enough to counter it, thankfully.

To be precise, though, I honestly didn't take any issue with the story apart from one specific point:
The end of the core game. It was such a bloody letdown and left more loose ends than a string truck getting into an accident. As damning as that was, the final nail in the coffin was that all the DLC storylines were unrelated, so explained nothing that was left lingering.
How about the "worst story ever" that we actually enjoyed? Final Fantasy VIII. Everyone hated it, it had gaping plot holes and pulled a complete 180 halfway through the game, but damned if I'm not a huge sucker for a love story.

Also, from what I can gather - Halo.
(War is going on, kill enemies. By Halo 3 - enemies now no longer threat, kill parasites by igniting big explody ring.)
I've never played Halo, in case you haven't gathered.
If you haven't played something, then you can't judge it. Same goes for whoever nominated Battlefield 3, lolzy time-traveller.
OT: Half-Life 2 or Bad Company 2. One had the barest of bare minimum plots, the other... was fucking stupid (yes, having an unexpected plot twist is good - some advice HL2 could learn to follow - but you've got to remember to make the unexpected plot twist BE ANY GOOD). Fortunatly, the former is redeemed by how much more awesome it gets when playing the complete works of Muse in the background, while the latter is redeemed by its amazing multiplayer, so it's all good.

Ok, really, this is a thread for "worst stories", not the hundred thousand mediocore stories that 90% of games have (pretty much everything in this thread), not the openly parodying ones (Duke Nukem) unless you think it's really that bad of a parody and not ones where you simply didn't pay enough attention to realize was there.

Legitimately bad stories that absolutely destroy games, come on guys, step it up.

COLD WAR FANTASIST WANK GAMES!
The fact that you add in a game that hasn't come out yet really tells the story, and while I haven't played the others, I can tell you this, Modern Warfare is not a cold war fantasy wank, it's a that explores the potential effects of American foreign interference in a very visceral way.

So no.

That one where the united human forces (usually led by Americans) defeat the evil aliens.

Now being more serious; I wasn't too keen on Fable 2's plot, especially with all the completely out of the blue plot twists that really didn't work;
'What's that Lucian? You murdered all my family? Mmmm I don't remember having one, especially for the past 30+ years since you shot my sister.'

Edit: Probably not the worst one, but the worst that comes to mind just now.

In the words of Charlie Brooker the whole story is "that ***** took my skull"
That Gaming Episode Charlie Brooker did on gaming was so much win.
