Worst Story

I've seen numerous threads talking about a game's great story or immersive atmosphere ,
But what games that you play have the worst or most underdeveloped stories?

My vote goes to gears of war, for essentially inviting me into a next gen game of whack-a-mole.

Final Fantasy 8. Worst RPG I have ever played, it's story was a fucking train wreck.

Aside from that, I'd have to say Mass Effect. Ok don't kill me now, I wouldn't say it's terrible or the worst story ever, but terribly average and undeserving of a ton of its praise. I'm still gonna buy ME2 as the game was decent enough to warrant the purchase.

Aside from that, I'd have to say Mass Effect.

I really liked FF8's story. Mixing past, present and future into a single timeframe was a pretty cool idea. Love story wasn't too bad either. It kept me interested throughout the 30 hours of the game.
I have to agree with Mass Effect though. Talking with the crew about their past and their races was somewhat interesting, but the story itself was plain boring.
With Halo it's the usual: Like anything in the game the story wasn't bad but simply... average.

The second half of Fahrenheit gets my vote. How could they fuck up such premise?

See it was the total opposite for me. FF8's story was in shambles with crap tons of inconsistencies, a love story so bad, it's like they hired some reject from Disney to write it. Characters were so unlikable, and the story lacked direction and was just incredibly stupid.

But thats the beauty of opinion I guess, but of coarse the asshole screaming in the back of my head can't help but say "man just how low are some peoples standards" when someone mentions how they like FF8.

Yea Mass Effect suffered a crap load of problems in story, I actually wrote a little mini review about it in the "games with potential" thread if you can hunt that down.

Actually, I've noticed a lot of people saying things like this about Mass Effect. Glad you liked it enough to get ME2 though. I love Mass Effect more than I love my boyfriend.

As much as I found it to be so terribly and agonizingly average, it was still playable and the sci fi freak in me somehow kept my sanity together with the game and still found the the sparkle in the Zircon that people see to be a diamond.

Just Cause.... Very sketchy story, go in cause political upheaval, story in a nutshell.

Also any of those driving games where theres some backstory about trying to build up street cred or whatever. Just go back to Race, win money, make car faster and repeat.

I actually consider myself someone with a rather high standard. I'm not saying it was a great story, but it's an interesting one at the least. Compared to the usual "Good fights Evil and someone's always a traitor at the end" formula of most games It's satisfying. Compared to FF6 and 7 it's weak.

Call of Duty: World at War

I know FPS =/= story, but not only is it a ripoff of the original Call of Duty, but the characters are meh and don't draw you in at all. For example:

*you die in nuke* "OMG WTF???"
*you watch Gaz get his head blown off, Price is shot* "Nooooo!"

Call of Duty 5:
*you watch your captain get speared* "Wait, what? Who was that? He was my captain? Really?"
*you get ambushed in Okinawa* "Oh well, Kiefer Sutherland is dead. Where are my airstrikes?"

Well FF8 was the first FF I played... I liked the story! Ok, maybe the 'guess what, we are ALL orphans and were bestest friends EVER whend we were kids and don't remember because... uuhhhh... the summoning GFs thing, yeah, that' sucked pretty hard. And Rinoa SUCKS. Butbutbut I liked the sorceresses part, and though the orphan part was stupid it allowed for the classic FF-Story-Twist (tm) of Edea being good after all...

Now I want to play FF8 :|
