Well for me, pretty much every girl I've fallen for has been little more than a close friend and it's like there's an invisible barrier between us that will always keep us divided. So often for me its just about any girl simply because there are literally thousands of other men they can be with and I can do very little to stand out of the crowd.

This story sounds a but like the greek myth of Narcissus, a hero who was renowned for his legendary beauty. He disdained those who loved him, however, and as divine punishment he falls in love with his own reflection in a pool, and dies because he is unable to leave the reflection.
