So, I'm playing Infamous on the PS3. I get the chance to reduce the damage I take by 10%. Cool! I accept!

All of a sudden, the bad guys are sporting new weapons, abilities, they're more agressive and numerous! What have I done!?!??

Well, that was a stupid upgrade.

What others in other games you have played are worth avoiding?

I think he means the upgrade made the enemies stronger? But maybe it was actually just part of the game development.

You realize it's not the upgrades that do that, it's called a difficulty curve. (Well in Infamous it's more like a difficulty spike each time you go to a new island but whatever)

What is it like unmodded oblvion? You gain a level and suddenly all the bandits have Daedric swords and armor?

He got an upgrade that didn't amount to anything. Instead of making the game easier, the game compensated for his increase in attack/defense by upgrading its own damage and defense.

Unfortunately, this happens in games to balance it out so you don't become Batman with a Green Lantern Ring, i.e. OVERPOWERED. To put it the way an old DM did, "Its so the game lasts longer and you aren't breezing through it."

And to answer this, worst upgrade I've ever got? Can't remember, I always loaded from an earlier save if I wasn't happy with level up choices.

Any pokemon evolution that added a weakness, especially to common types.

Charizard, I'm looking at you with that damned flying type that gets tacked on. you're now weak to electric and even weaker to Stealth Rock. Great fucking job there.

...

Then again, I guess not everyone can be like Empoleon and get the bitching steel typing.

so... what's the problem? each new island in progression has stronger enemies. the enemies stay same regardless the upgrade.

to answer the question, I have to say some things in ME2..

sometimes I have to spend a skill point for skill that I don't want in order to unlock the skill that I DO want. and then I can't get level 4 of that certain skill and use its fullest potential because I'm 1 skillpoint short.

EDIT: and it annoys the fuck out of me when squads have 1 skill point left that is unusuable

so the worst upgrade ever is being forced to upgrade an unwanted skill

Anytime you play an allegedly-free game, and spend a dime's worth of their "premium" currency, it stings a bit. Paying $5 worth of it for an essentially-empty upgrade is a real pain.
In-game, though? Nuclear weapons / planet busters. Suddenly, all the neutrals go running for cover, and you have to start your diplomacy from scratch.

In Mass Effect 2 for the engineer class (my favorite), the drone you can use, the final upgrade for exploding is useless. The explosion does no damage to enemies the stronger drone is much better.

This.
I loved Cryo ammo. It's not especially helpful, but I don't care. In order to get it though, I had to put some points into Incindiary. Then everything was uneven and I was not happy.

Yes, I made my guy take less damage by a big whopping 10%, and the enemies just go stronger. But I didn't even go to a new island (yet).

I admit, I think I went in a different direction on the same island, just exploring. But all ofa sudden, guys are throwing energy balls at me rather than small arms fire.

I think this sort of thing ticked me off in borderlands too. If you upgrade, and the enemies upgrade too... it is as if nothing has been accomplished.

Contrast to Diablo. You get to level 50, and the little blue guys on the first level can be blown away with ease. Tougher opponents are out there, but, these little blue guys that used to be so dangerous are now laughable. It gives one a sense of progress and power.

My 10% upgrade did NOT do that for me.

In inFAMOUS the enemies don't scale with upgrades, they become stronger as the story progresses. You can get absolutely no upgrades, and the enemies will still get stronger. The fact that you upgraded right before means absolutely nothing.

Slow, Stop and Death spells in any Final Fatasy-like RPG. They work only on regular enemies you can beat to death in less time it takes to cast the spell, and the harder bosses are all immune to them.

An upgrade that let's you get more upgrades faster. It's stupid and a waste of resources (ie: the swift learner perk from Fallout).

Not as bad as "Here and Now", which just gives you another level.

But, yeah, anything that gives you something you'll get eventually anyway is just going to hurt you in the end.

The scope for the Harpoon Gun in BioShock 2. It doesn't add any noticeable zoom to the thing and just plants a big ol', cracked piece of glass right where you're aiming. I always got that one last.
